So, really, the sum total of arguments against Smith have his 2013 season stats as their buttress. Actually, many people have brought up 2013, not just me. asshole.
SMITH IS THE STARTER until he isn't. The (new) coaching staff looked at the alternatives, critiqued his performance, and decided he's the best they have. Get over it!!
For the record I don't even think Smith is a lost cause. I am not even one bit emotionally invested in tearing him down and I think he has some parts that Gailey could work with... but this guy, man. Holy shit.
Actually, the record (what you've posted on this discussion) says that you ARE invested in his failure, since you're arguing with me, who is invested in his and the team's success. As JStokes says "own it!"
Because they have no other choice. If they had even a below average QB or a healthy Fitz, he wouldn't be the starter. It's ok to be a fan boi. _
Says you. According to Chan Gailey, "he's the starter and we never considered a competition..." They have several choices: 1. they could have made an attempt to draft a QB in the first round. 2. They could have named Fitzpatrick the starter (even with his broken leg). 3. Then could have named Petty the starter, even though he's a rookie. 4. They could STILL name someone else the starter. But you're right. they have ZERO options other than Smith. I know it's ok to be a fan and don't need or desire any approval to be one.
You are probably including the buffalo game, which was weird in terms of playcalling and targeting Harvin. Take away that outlier and the Miami game where Geno doesn't throw, and Geno performed much better with Harvin. His QB rating looks to be between 83 and 88, which is good enough to start in the NFL.
I think those stats have been compiled from "SmithHaters.com" because NFL.com says something completely different: 97.9 rating during the Harvin tenure: Splits By Month G Att Comp Pct Yds Avg Lng TD Int 1st 1st% 20+ Sck SckY Rate December 5 122 78 63.9 1,066 8.7 74 6 3 47 38.5 17 11 69 97.9 November 1 12 10 83.3 89 7.4 28 0 0 3 25.0 1 2 9 97.6 That said, it was all of six games and is skewed by his perfect rating against Miami (which is meaningless because Miami didn't care about winning or losing).
I don't think so. I don't think they were very efficient together. Smith had his best game of the season with Harvin shelved in week 17. When Harvin was there he was trying to get it to him too much. They may have been coming from the staff but either way I don't think he performed better with Harvin at all. let alone much better.
I didn't mean to say that Harvin improved Geno's directly, only that Geno's performance seemed to improve with Harvin in the mix. Why? I don't know. Although Harvin was partly responsible for Geno's 87.4 QB rating against Minn, he wasn't a huge part in Geno's other games, like against Tenn. But maybe Decker getting healthy as something to do with it. Either way Geno seems to do better with more weapons, and his numbers did improve ater the Harvin trade. Thats what the FO should focus on and that's what they did in getting Marshall (who will catch 50-50s and over the middle) and Devin (who will stretch the field and make things easier for Decker/Marshall). When Geno had Holmes, Kerley (who was on a contract year) Winslow in 2013, his overall 3rd down conversion rate was very good (ranked below Matt Ryan that year).
Well, it's not like I don't have favorite players. Curtis Martin is/was my favorite player after he came to the Jets. But never did I elevate my interest in his career over that of the team's. People who do that might consider themselves Jet fans, but they are that only indirectly, and imo are not really Jet fans. I guess there are some West Virginia fans who followed Smith to the Jets. That's fine. But as you say they should own up to not really being Jet fans.
Fair enough. My argument was more about Harvin than Smith anyway. I thought Decker had the bigger impact on Smith & the offense than Harvin, in my opinion. Its a separate argument but I thought they were dumb for forcing it to Harvin and they didn't know how to use him properly. I'm glad he's gone. But your premise that he will play better with better weapons I will agree with, but you could say that about any QB, bad or good.. What we will want to see is efficient usage of those weapons
I merely point out the argument for Geno, which involves submitting FOR and AGAINST points. You seem to label any point FOR Geno as "cherry-picking" when it's just part of a full accounting of what he is, his potential, performances, etc. If you have an issue, just post the statsitical arguments against.
He has been a bottom ranked Qb two years running. Merely pointing out the arguments FOR Smith is what you did. You had no balance in your post. Arguments about potential - I can see a stat based analysis where you can point to an upward trend of improved performance, even from a low baseline, as indicating a possible continuation of that upward trend. It's a decent enough argument even if it is no sure thing. But just to argue that a player is young or might improve is not really a valid stat based argument.
I really think that Geno has a severe confidence issue. There were 2 stretches last year where he looked like a completely different quarterback from his rookie year: OAK, GB, CHI and then MIN, TEN, NE, MIA. I'm not analyzing his results, but rather his processes, so stats are meaningless in this evaluation. In the 2 stretches of games I named, he looked unlike anything I saw from 2013. He was gliding through the pocket to avoid pressure, stepping up, using his legs to set up downfield passes rather than to run, actually going through his progressions, and confidently ripping the ball down the field. However, when the team started 1-2, he became a shell of that self. Watching the Lions, Chargers or Broncos games were like watching his tape from November 2013. He became a statue in the pocket, showing a blatant disregard for pressure. He was jocularly locked into his first receiver, repeatedly getting his routes jumped as a result. Most of all, he was extremely hesitant in throwing. He would hold onto the football for an extra hitch to make sure that his receiver was open, throwing with no anticipation. It's more of a trust issue than anything else for me at this point. If you were to tell me that I was going to get confident Geno for the entire season, I would become his biggest supporter on this site and put my faith with him. However, it's hard to depend on a guy who is capable of putting together the type of eggs that Geno does. I think if the Jets would have won against the Packers or Bears (or both), Geno might've actually had a pretty good season because his confidence wouldn't have taken such an early hit. But he plays too much off of momentum, which is horrible for a QB. When the ship is sinking, you need your quarterback to be the guy to step up and save it.
