I haven't seen when it is, but I have rad that the Jets had an interview scheduled with McCarthy before the Browns did. I believe that McCarthy is interviewing with the Browns today. The Jets have Gase coming in tomorrow. My guess is that McCarthy is scheduled for sometime next week (hopefully early as in Monday).
If in those 3-5 years we make the playoffs every year and contend for the SB, I won't mind "starting over".
McCarthy has actually accomplished the two things we need: Develop a QB Win a Super Bowl McCarthy has PLENTY of faults, but Gase has literally nothing on his resume that's appealing unless you're also bringing in 2013 Peyton Manning to play QB.
The Jets have had only 3 experienced HCs in their entire history: Weeb Ewbank, Richie Kotite and Bill Parcells. It's no coincidence that most of the Jets history has been a bad joke and an embarrassment. It's time for a change. One of the definitions of insanity is to keep doing things the same way, yet expect a different result or outcome. There is a huge difference between being a coordinator and a HC. First-time HCs have a lot to learn, a lot more to do, have to learn on the job, and as a result, overlook things and make a lot of mistakes that an experienced HC would not. While there are no guarantees with an experienced HC, and some men are obviously capable of making the leap from coordinator to HC without causing the team to suffer or struggle, the safer route is to go with someone who has experience as a HC. He knows what to expect. He has his system, philosophy, and routine in place. He has a network of friends and colleagues to draw upon when hiring a CS. Someone like McCarthy has been around long enough that he has seen about everything in the NFL. Candidates like Kingsbury, Zac Taylor, and even Todd Monken can't even begin to compete with that. They don't have the connections or network and have a much more difficult time hiring a quality CS. They don't know what to expect or how to handle many situations that they've never had to deal with before. Their routine, ways of doing things hasn't been firmly established. Finally, we all know how undisciplined the Jets have been, how they have no culture or identity. We have a very young team and imo need an experienced HC who will command respect, will instill discipline and create a winning culture and an identity for the team. That's not to say that a first-time HC can't do that, but I believe it's much harder for them to achieve, and with the Jets' lack of success in that regard, and with the Johnsons making the decision, I have no confidence that they could find the next McVay. IMO it's much more likely that they'd find the next future Richie Kotite.
Upon reflection, I would back off my hard "No" for Gase on he basis of I'd prefer him - having had NFL HCing experience - over any newbie or coordinator who has no NFL HCing experience. Still, I have concerns about a relatively new coach coming off being fired and jumping right into the next gig - has he really had time to digest and change the things that caused him to be fired? Even if the owner was wrong for firing him, there had to be things Gase did to trigger that.
All HCs have warts, even the great ones. The difference is that they're able to overcome their warts or work to change or lessen their impact. There are legitimate questions regarding McCarthy. I am a huge Packer fan, and have been disappointed with their lack of success. As you know, football, more than any other sport perhaps, is a "team" sport. Having a future HOF QB is a big leg up in competition, but it takes more than that. McCarthy hasn't had a quality TE or RB for years. He has frequently had at least 1, if not 2-3 starting OL out with injuries or in IR. His defense has had major holes. I see a lot of criticism here of McCarthy for the Packers not having been to or won more SBs, but have seen little or no criticism of Ted Thompson. Now I get it that he isn't applying for a job with the Jets, but still. He was the GM supplying talent. He didn't sign many outside FAs and allowed a number of good home-grown Packers to leave via FA. Did he work against McCarthy? Did he provide the players that McCarthy wanted, and was McCarthy wrong/mistaken about what the team needed? That's the question, along with questions regarding his play calling, game management that I would like to see answered. How they are answered would tell us if McCarthy would be a good, safe, or bad hire.
And upon further, further reflection, in Gase's favor is that he coached in the AFC East against the Pats and Bills, and obviously knows the Phins well, so that's a big plus. I still prefer either Harbaugh if possible, or McCarthy, but Gase is quickly becoming a good option IMO.
At least it's an NFC team . . . ? In his defense, he's an older poster so this is probably going back before the Titan/Jets even existed and long before the merger. I'm not a fan of any other team except the Jets. Probably the furthest I'd go is mildly dispassionate about some teams, and even that's a stretch. I'm more of an individual player when it comes down to it. Roman Gabriel, Doug Williams, Gale Sayers, Eric Dickerson to name a few. @NYJalltheway used to be a fan of about 36 teams when he first joined here, and there's only 32, lol. He was also probably only about 15.
I have talked about this before. I was a Packer fan before I was a Jets fan. I started rooting for the Vince Lombardi Packers in '63. Then when Joe Willie Namath was drafted by the Jets, I became a Jets fan. I never stopped rooting for the Packers, but the Jets became my team. I've never even read a Packers fan site, much less posted on one. This is my 5th or 6th Jets fan site over the last 20 years or so. Since both have had some very lean years where they sucked, for short periods of time I also rooted for the Walsh/Montana 49ers and the Noll/Bradshaw Steelers in the playoffs and SB. Since the Panther franchise was founded, I've rooted for them as well, but they are a distant 3rd to the Jets and Packers.
And I do. I rooted for the Packers this year since the Jets were going nowhere and I didn't want the Jets to mess up their draft position; otherwise, I'm always rooting for the Jets to win.
I went back and edited before you posted this. I thought maybe you went back all the way to Curly Lambeau, haha.
Well, there's where my mildly dispassionate thing comes in. I root for other teams during the regular season - and sometimes I can barely call it rooting - when it helps the Jets. And a lot of times, it's like drinking Draino. When it comes to the playoffs, that can change up drastically, and can also be like drinking Draino. It all depends how the deck plays out. When the Giants beat the Packers in NFC Champ game to face the Cheats, I was so mad (Giants hater). Plus, I thought they had a better chance of beating the Cheats. I had to keep swallowing chunks during the SB, the bile was awful, but I had to do the right thing and write in David Tyree as a candidate for President.
Caldwell who has accomplished more is seen as a bad hire but Gase who has accomplished nothing is seen as a possibly good hire? SMH
Did McCarthy really help develop Rodgers? He sure didn't seem to help any of GB's other QBs develop. McCarthy may have, but if the Fahey article is correct, then he has hindered Rodgers for years with his play design and play calling.
