No, I'm saying if watching this team pisses people off so much, then stop following them, become a frontrunner, and go root for another team. People act like the Jets winning is all they live for. It's just a game people. A little perspective here.
I think Mangini's out-of-nowhere success in '06 distorted the talent on the team and set up unreal expectations for '07 (which the Jets then aggravated by not infusing the team with new talent, thinking they could package picks to take four players and add stalwarts like David Bowens). I like Revis & Harris; however, we didn't address the O-line or D-Line and paid for it. I believe Clemens will be the real deal in '08 -- go watch his games last year, and there's a lot to like. Time will tell, but Chad won't be the solution to the position in '08. I 100% guarantee he won't win the position in training camp.
Ellis at #6? Really? For a 3-4? This was discussed at length in March why this doesn't work. Kenyon Coleman is 6-5 292, like a good 3-4 DE should be, Harvey is 6-5 252. How the hell is the undersized Harvey going to play the 5 technique? Add 50 lbs of muscle in one TC?? Some would say that Coleman needs another 10 lbs on him as well. Mayo, being a guy who people projected anywhere from 14-35, was taken 10th overall. Shows how undpredictable the draft is. He also shot up draft boards in that case. He will play ILB primarily btw. An option, yes. But then Gholston is there at 7, the Pats take him, and the pass rush isn't improved. Believe me, that move destroys this offseason, and we are the same old Jets. The pass rush is 100 times more important than CBs.
I agree with all of the above. Why then did the Jets trade up for a tweener at the bottom of the first round this year? Keller is not going to help them in the trenches at all. Once again they traded two picks that might have helped in those areas for a guy who talented or not is going to have a lesser effect on the field than they need. They're capping all of that off by getting into a very public feud (again) with a trench player (Baker) who while he's not top of the line is definitely somebody they can't afford to just piss away for a 5th round pick in '10 which is where they're headed at the moment. Clemens may or may not be the answer at QB, it's not going to matter if the trenches collapse again due to injury, misplaced confidence in the talent they have or simply the inability of players to adjust to schemes that have been hard to adjust to in recent seasons.
The Jets have lots of needs the have spent a fortune on the left side of the line the last two years and desperately need some more offensive talent. They like Keller if he stretches the field and adds another demension to the O it's not neglecting the line it's adding another part. This team was a black hole when Mangini got here. Quite the opposite, Baker is the one who went public the Jets have been very publicly quiet and proffessional. Putting two first round picks on the line signing an all pro tackle and a former high line pick along with drafting OL late is hardly ignoring the OL and you don't know if there done yet on the OL. If you happened to watch, Mangini has actually worked hard installed a plan and the team responded well with pretty weak talent and over all a pretty weak NFL staff. The staff has been bolstered the drafts have looked good so far and the off season was pretty bold on several fronts. I'm not sold on Tanny yet but Mangini looks like a guy with potential to be a great head coach. If he adjusts after the league adjusted to him and the talent keeps improving and we get lucky with Clemens this team is in the mix for a long time. Enjoy the process this year and next will tell if we are moving forward or just spinning our wheels with Mangini and Tanny. Improve this year, get in the mix next year and these guys are looking pretty smart. This team was a total wreck at the end of 05.
First of all Im not pissed with the pick just skeptical of it because it has bust potential to it. From where we stood we took the BPA and I can not knock it. I actually wanted to trade down and pick up more picks. I would have then taken Leodis Mckelvin or someone else. The Cb spot opposite Revis scares me more than any position on Defense. They signed Pace and Harris will be a beast from day one. There is no protecting a Cb on an Island. If you feel like pass Rusher is more valuable then why not try to trade down and take a De and get extra picks? Once again Im not trashing the pick because it was the best thing to do if they kept it im just worried about it.
First of all I have been saying from the day I joined this board we should rebuild and I also said that our team was not good during the 2006 season when we made the playoffs. If you look at my post you will see that I think our team is mediocre at best and in the beginning of rebuilding. I have preached it takes years not one great offseason to build a contender. One of the lines I repeat over and over is Im willing for the team to take a step back to let players play so we can evaluate our team to take two steps forward in the long run. I expect our record to be anywhere from 6-10 to 9-7 best case scenario and that is better than the 6-10 I predicted for the last two seasons. Im whinning about the process of the rebuild not the fact that we are rebuilding. If Ellis and COles are not part of our Future then why not sever the coard now and get players who will be. Why does Mangini not take the model of his mentors Parcells and Beli and get rid of players a year too early as opposed to a year to late? Or can I not complain about the fact that we get a coach with a good pedigree and he somehow forgets what he was taught by Future Hof coaches? Logically speaking Chad has one of the best brains and worse arms in Nfl history. He does not want to coach so it is time to go if we are rebuilding. Logically speaking we should have spent the money we had last year on Adelius Thomas instead of Calvin Pace this year. Logically speaking the Team should have had a backup plan for Pete Kendall or silently gave him his money instead of having to pay out the a** for faneca and have no depth on both lines or a Cb next to revis because we overpayed for most of the people we signed this year when we could have gotten fair market value last year? Is that actual football logic? Nobody is a football prodigy and I would not even pretend to be.
Everyone is going to get pissed off when the team they love losses, its part of human nature to be dissapointed. You should enjoy watching the Jets and you should be annoyed and pissed off if they lose.
We had a bad season last year real bad but the team itself was not a total wreck. The one player that had to be dealt with on a rebuilding team was locked up in a long term deal. That is not a sign of a team that's a wreck. If the Jets were a wreck Rhodes would have played out his deal rather than resign.
Dude you realize you just took the time to tell me how super-duper patient you are...and then in the last two sentences you basically say you're whining cause it's not moving fast enough for you? Like...WTF? Does that make any sense to you? You bi-polar or something? Like you're cool with rebuilding, you realize it doesn't take a year, but we should get somebody in for Ellis and Coles in NOW because in a couple years they might retire or just really decline. Because except for whatever world you seem to live in, you really don't cut a solid player with no one actually there to step in. Considering how stupid the complaint is...so you probably can't? Iunno. How is that...logically.....I....don't even know what to do anymore.... "Logically speaking" we didn't have the room to make a Thomas sized signing..."logically speaking" he took a huge discount to play for the Pats...You're not using fucking logic. Are you fucking kidding me? Faneca >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Kendall. WHAT IN THE FUCK are you talking about? Last year teams were overpaying too. Seriously like....come on dude a guy proclaiming himself an honest football fan should cut this kinda shit out.
Once again we are rebuilding if Coles and Ellis are not going to be a part of it then we should get rid of them now. I know it takes time to rebuild but if those two are not going to be around then don't you should get rid of them now? If we are rebuilding then shouldn't we trade a player for picks or younger players we think will be ready when the team is ready to win? You trade older players like Coles or Ellis for picks and let the picks play? I believe that is what rebuilding teams do. The players we get back for Ellis and Coles would play not the invisible f**king man. Let them play while we are rebuilding so they can get experience or does having a losing season not fit into your magical rebuilding plan? Logically speaking if we would have gotten rid of some dead wood last year we would have been able to make a Thomas size signing. Instead we have to wait until this year to jettison Roberson and Vilma and don't get me started on Chad's contract! Faneca is way better than Kendall and im not comparing the two! The point is if Kendall were kept that position would not have been as big a disaster and we might not have had to sign faneca for a ton of money and could have went for other areas of needs. I wonder why the Steelers let him go a few years too early? I guess they have five sb's for a reason. Adelius Thomas was not an overpay. Hopefully Calvin I had one half decent season Pace isn't as well. I dont care what other teams overpay for I care about what the Jets pay for.
Good points. Obviously part of the problem is a lack of long range planning. Short term thinking is obviously going to be present when the HC is on the hot seat, but Mangini had nothing but support from Woody and at least three, realistically four, years to work with if he were showing clear progress at rebuilding the team. Afte 06 many were enamored of the notion that this team was close. Mangini should have known better, and if he had merely continued rebuilding last year, we would have been better off now. The Kendall Faneca situation feeds right into that, since the team cannot fill all holes with draft picks. Sure Faneca is better than Kendall, but the way Kendall was handled last year left LG as the single weakest starting position on the team by far, and that is saying something on this team. Given that situation, the Faneca signing made a great deal of sense, but there would not have been the same imperative involved if Kendall were still on the team. As I have said before and am adamant about, the team gained nothing by leaving two square peg in round hole players on the team another year, those of course being Robertson and Vilma. The rebuilding project that was necessary was delayed another year, and their trade values went down. There may still arise a need for major additional work on the roster for the 3-4, depending. I am not quite sure Ellis and Coles are in quite the same situation, though. I am more concerned at this point about longevity for Coles. I would be surprised if he is still starting year after next. But even Ellis as a long term starter is questionable.
I think 2006 was the worst thing that could have happened to the franchise. Everything lined up perfectly so our bad team could get to the playoffs and our Cs and Front office believed the false Hype. Our draft reflected that thinking. Don't get me wrong Harris and Revis were fantastic picks but the way the draft turned out they were made as if we were a few players away from Sb contention. Vilma and Robertson not being able to play the 3-4 were totally ignored and set us back light years and the Chad Fiasco is still being played out four years after his injuries. Hopefully the Fo gets a clue and will rebuild the right way.
Great thread. Compliments to all. I disagree with the pessimists but at least their "whining" is intelligent whining. And, as this discussion goes on every year, they were dead right last season. As for this year, we'll know soon enough. 21 days to camp! Kendall--While losing Pete last year was a setback, it hardly mattered. Team was on track for a losing season and Pete's retention would have made little difference. Faneca in his declining years is far better than Kendall in his prime. Pete's football knowledge was excellent helping Mangold and Brick, but his actual play was mediocre at best. Especially drive blocking in short yardage. In looking at the FO, it should be remembered that Kendall has left every team he's played for in bitter recrimination. His jailhouse lawyer bit was hurting the development of Mangini's team. I would also point out that Mangini does pretty well with Coles who is very outspoken, so the issue isn't that the Jets can't deal with criticism by players. Rebuilding the D--DRob and Vilma are both talented players who didn't fit the changed schemes. No matter how you slice it, you lose ground when transitioning good players off the team. Maybe we get some draft choices back next year, but they won't be of equal value. This is a cost of bringing in Tangini. Jenkins and 08 D--a motivated and uninjured Jenkins can significantly improve the Jets D. For the last 2 years, the D has been bad because of inconsistency, not lack of overall talent. Refer to DRob and Vilma. If Jenkins can plug up the middle, he will make the play of the rest of the D significantly better. If the Jets win in 08, it will be the D that leads the way. Baker--he is very valuable to the Jets but the FO has no real choice but to take a hard stand. He is pocketing last year's cap motivated salary advance and now claiming he is underpaid. But, the Jets have no real replacement. They have TE's who can catch, and TE's who can block, but only Baker can do both. Given that the O is not that talented (unless the roster additons all play well), he really hurts the Jets. Predicting the PO's or a winning season is silly based on last year's record, but optimism is not. One of the pundits picked the Jets as one of 5 teams that can surprise on the upside. I think that's correct, but a lot of unknowns have to fall into place for that to happen.
If the 06 team couldn't earn a winning record with that cupcake schedule, the Jets would still have only won 4-6 games last year. They would have been that bad. The Kendall situation happened during training camp in August, not in March where the problem could have been addressed. Believe me, not having the talent/mind at LG that Kendall is and having Adrien Clarke as the replacement is the difference of 2-4 games. And Kendall isn't that good anymore. They were made thinking that the division was in their grasp, not a SB. So did everyone else. Are you re-posting this from a January thread?? Look at what has been done to improve the team. I think they got a clue. A young FO/CS makes mistakes considering they were never in that position before, and have vowed not to make them again. They go and fill in holes and now have a team that looks good on paper and they still don't have a clue?? I'm having trouble following you.
