You forgot McClown Of course if they spend a lot on Cousins and say a Robinson there will be a riot over them breaking up the rebuild process because they will be trying to win next year.
McCown is 38 & will be 39 when camp starts... not that I have a problem w/resigning him to a cost friendly deal but ONLY if we draft Mayfield.
This makes no sense. Cousins will be 30. Allen Robinson will be 25 when the season starts. Those are two guys that can contribute for the next 4-5 years... Robinson longer. You'd still have the 6th overall pick plus two 2nd rounders. You're trying to compare this to Marshall/Revis/Cro and it's a bad comparison.
With Case Keenum starting and McNown backing up we don't need to draft a QB this year unless the right guy falls to us. If we are ever going to compete with Bellichik We need to play chess, not checkers.
I'm not disagreeing with you. I have been saying that all along and have even quoted you. They can get better quickly and don't see the negatives. 'A bird in hand is worth two in the bush'. I was just playing around being sarcastic foreseeing the reactionary meltdowns and criticism. Yesterday there was outrage because they didn't declare a Super Bowl run. It doesn't matter what they say or do. There will be an uproar, ensuing some hit piece by some hack writer looking for attention with some negative headline.
Then you draft your Future QB Today (Mayfield) & mold him for Tomorrow (preferably behind McCown who will be much more cost effective)... thinking that we will compete with the patsies with what we have now is absurd... That's playing Chess not checkers.
There's a reason Keenum bounced around until age 30 and only stuck once he started playing behind a great OL and high end defense. Spending the kind of money it's going to take to get him away from Minnesota would be foolish. At that rate, just bring back McCown and let him be the holdover until the QB we draft is ready. But again, this is why I prefer to throw the farm at Cousins. That answers every question.
Agree on Richburg. Hope Gettleman is serious about this uprooting of the team and lets him get free. If Norwell gets free, he's one guy that is a significant upgrade at LG via free agency. But if they get him, they can cut Carpenter and get depth elsewhere (i.e. a draftee, veteran, maybe even Dozier) Agree that Tackle will be hard to upgrade in free agency. Beahcum is locked in at his guaranteed salary and I personally want to see Shell in year 3. Qvale is good depth. Ijalana is gone I prefer a draftee and to resign McCown. I've thought about Keenum, but I don't believe he's a legitimate NFL starter going forward just yet. They would need to draft a QB high even with Keenum. Prefer McCown and their 6th pick on a QB I really feel good about Anderson, Kearse, Enunwa, Hansen and Stewart. I want this team to be about building through the draft. I'd prefer them roll out these guys as their top 5. I don't want to bury Stewart or Hansen now. We can't forget how good Enunwa was pre-injury. Agree RB should be addressed in the draft.
Kirk Cousins. Trumaine Johnson. Ziggy Ansah. I'm not sure how Ansah would fit, but that's not my problem, that's on Defensive Genius Todd Bowles, Defensive Genius Kacy Rodgers and their staff. He's a very good pass rushing specialist and if this regime knows defense, they'll figure out a way to fit him in and make it work. If they can't, the next coach in 2019, will.
Carpenter only has one year left on his deal and we have a ton of cap space. You let him play out his contract and let one of your guards ride the bench for a year. If one of them gets hurt you have spare instead of relying on whoever was backing up Dozier. I really prefer that they let Dozier's sorry ass walk.
I really do not understand all the Cousins love on this board. Signing a slightly above average QB for what will be elite QB dollars will set this franchise back another 5 years at least.
We are not signing Case Keenum. He's gonna cost what? 16M. Rather just pony up the extra for a far better qb in Cousins
I think Cousins is better than slightly above average. Over 4000 yards, 27 TDs and a QB rating of 93.9, while playing for a cruddy team. His 13 picks are too high but some of those are due to the fact that he lost his top two receivers. The guy has proven he can play the position at a top 10 level and he’s just coming into his prime.
How many teams are there to bid up Cousins value because they aren’t in a position to draft a QB instead? Washington is likely done paying him by the coaches remarks. Maybe Arizona. I think you are exaggerating the market for Cousins.
The Browns may make a run and tout the fact that they can surround him with a ton of talent through the first and 4th pick of the draft, plus the added draft capital, and the 100+ mil they have in cap space. Playing for the Browns though has almost turned into a curse though so I am unsure how Cousins would think about it.
Cousins, like most players, is going to go to the team that pays him the most and assume he’s good enough to make them a winner. But Cleveland isn’t going to pass up a QB who they’d expect to lead them for 15 years for one who they may get 5 out of. The new GM has the job simply because his predecessor passed on highly touted QB’s in the draft; he isn’t going to do the very thing that got his predecessor fired and got him the job. They are going QB at 1.
I think that whiffing on the AJ McCaron trade was the reason Sashi Brown was let go, but yes passing on Wentz, Watson, etc was a big factor I'm sure. I would tend to agree with you, and I think the Browns will opt to draft a QB over signing Cousins to a big money contract. I'm wondering how long ownership has given Dorsey to turn this thing around. I think all the QB's in the draft, aside from Rosen, will need some time to get acclimated to the NFL game. Cousins will have his fair share of suitors. For all we know, the Vikings may opt to go after him as Bradford can't be trusted, they may think Case Keenum's play is not sustainable, and Teddy B has injury concerns as well.
