Welcome aboard! Be prepared to be challenged, sometimes not very nicely, but if you remain open-minded you can learn a lot here. As to your suggested moves, not bad. Personally I want the offensive skill positions upgraded more, and even if I took a QB later, I wouldn't wait until the 5th round - I think a potential starter can be had in round 3. But your moves would make the team much better. Something to keep in mind though: this year might be the last year for a while that the Jets draft this high and have a shot at a FQB. Making the moves you suggest might well get them to the playoffs or close, but won't likely get them to the SB, and then they'll be drafting from the bottom third of each round and have less access to the best talent. That's why I would focus on getting that FQB this year, even using draft capital to do so.
I think that McCown is more than a projection. Bowles loves him. McCown wants to come back. If the Jets fail to land Cousins, I would be very surprised if they sign Bridgewater instead of McCown. Even with Bridgewater, he hasn't played in 2 years. Would that affect FAs' thinking? If so, how? The team should have some idea about why ASJ faded. If it's him, then I don't see why they would want to keep him. If it was the system/how he was used, then they should. Since they have interest in keeping him, I'd think it's a case of being more the latter than the former. I agree that fear of creating another hole could lead to overpaying. I don't have a problem with matching any offers ASJ might receive, but spending time thinking, negotiating with ASJ could cost them another FA or FAs they want to sign. IMO that would be more costly than paying him an extra $1-2 million a season (overpaying). Besides, you haven't responded to the issue of having incentives in the contract that could resolve the issue. In addition, his contract could be written in such a way that the Jets could get out of it in a year or two if he doesn't produce. I don't see this as a black/white issue. There are other options to getting a deal done.
I don't either. As I said, I could be wrong and you could be right. It could all depend upon what other offers (if any) the other team receives and what they are looking to do. If they are looking to move down and just garner some additional picks, the cost could be lower than if they really wanted a player at that spot.
I can't help feeling we are in for a bit of a let down....looks like a lot of the free agents that are worth the big money are already connected to more talented teams with a lot of cap space. I would include in this list: Cousins (Vikes), Norwell (49ers), Trumaine Johnson (Raiders), Titans MLB staying with same team, etc. The problem being that the Jets are a bad year away from a tear down....it's an ambiguous situation for newcomers because the staff might be completely different in year 2 of their deal. I feel like we're going to be a magnet for prove it players that need a rehab year anyway, Sammy Weak Knees Watkins, Teddy Bridge over running water, Weston Concussion protocol Richburg, or Malcom "Bench Me" Butler....these are not franchise building types...sorry for the negativity just calling how I see it so far
That's a lot to move up a few spots. Which is why I'm more in favor of cousins, but have a feeling jets will end up in a position of having to trade up
Agree, but anyone who has been a Jets fan for a few years shouldn't ever feel "let down"...being "down" is a perpetual resting place, with an occasional spirited leap up beyond their actual ability before falling back to earth.
An argument can be made that a tear down already happened last year with Decker, Harris, Sheldon, Marshall, and others getting cut, traded, or not re signed. Not to mention Mo getting cut a few weeks ago after becoming a high maintenance player following his payday.
I don't think it will take that to move up, but if it did, for a FQB, I personally would do it. But good news for you, I doubt Macc would.
I do. http://www.drafttek.com/NFL-Trade-Value-Chart.asp But as I said before, trade up with who? Pretty certain everybody above us wants a QB too so there is nobody to trade with. Even Indy...
Hey, you could be spot on. Your reasoning makes some sense. Hopefully, FAs will see that the Jets are building something, have some good young players and will want to be a part of it (or will be persuaded by the Jets' ability and willingness to pay more than other teams). Then again, if Mac goes cheap and refuses to pay over a certain amount (being smart per some posters), then we could wind up exactly as you said, and not be any better in 2018 unless Mac drafts really well.
I just saw that Avery Williamson was ranked the 10th best linebacker in the NFL last year (DD was #8). 32 NFL teams averaging 3.5 starting linebackers (4-3 or 3-4) gives 112 starting linebackers. Would be nice to have both. If I had to choose one, it would be AW as he's 3 years younger and has put up quality stats for multiple years in a row. Anyways, I saw a twitter post on Bleacher that DD wants $8M-$10M/year, Jets offered $3M-4M/year.
Depending upon where you live (it's snowing here in NC and cold), it may mean you need to call an exterminator or to get your hearing checked!
Brate has been more productive than ASJ, but still a number to consider for the TE market. This works out to just under $7m/year http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/10193/cameron-brate Bucs re-signed TE Cameron Brate to a six-year, $41 million contract. ESPN's Jenna Laine reports the deal includes $18 million guaranteed. It's a huge contract for the former undrafted free agent, especially considering the Bucs used a first-round pick on O.J. Howard last spring. Brate isn't much of a blocker but is one of Jameis Winston's favorite targets, particularly in the red zone. He has 14 touchdowns over the past two seasons. The Harvard man turns 27 in July.
OUCH! Wow! For a player who has had a modest career and wanted to come back to the Jets last year, that's big jump!
That's a shitty offer wow. From what I've seen/know, I'd be cool with $6M/year and maybe a little more. $8M-$10M is high though
Bucs and tight end Cameron Brate have agreed to a new deal for six years, $41 million, $18 million in guarantees, per a league source. Brate far more productive then ASJ, but I am sure ASJ will try and bump up that $$$
I get the feeling we are going to lose out on all the top talent in free agency and get lesser known people, maybe its quantity over quality. We do need a lot. Not saying its bad, expect for the Center, we need the best one out there, but lets see.
Players of this day & age aren’t just gonna sign to the highest bidder. The Jets have a perception problem that starts w QB & the HC doesn’t help matters. Looking like Idzik 2015 all over again.Hopefully they’ll leave all the cap space for the next regime like Idzik did.
