We will not be able to make a big splash in free agency

E.g., Nicks is a great OL but he is going to get big $$$, assuming NO lets him go
and now that we're keeping Hunter, where does he fit

BTW, I would not get rid of Moore for Nicks... he seems like a team leader and I think they could use a few next year

WR could be addressed via free agency (Braylon?). Maybe try and sign S T Branch and draft OLB C Upshaw at 16. If we don't land T Branch draft Mark Barron and look elsewhere for OLB. We need a beast at Safety to combat NEs TEs.

Is Curtis Lofton or D'Qwell Jackson any good? Maybe they could replace Bart Scott.

    ?

Did the impact of what a pro bowl center can do for a team get lost on you when Mangold was out for three games? And since when was J Abe dominant on this team? When the going got tough, he got going. Another shot of Hennessy please.

    Great players, faaar
    Too much $$$

Not to mention poor fits, they both fit same roles as Harris not Scott

Tulloch would be better than Lofton at ILB. Safety has to be addressed in free agency and there is a couple of different options available.

I would never get rid of Moore no matter who we brought in.

The fact that Lowery is making it as a S feels terrible as a Jets fan especially since we all said to move him to Safety.

I'm not sure if Stephen Tulloch could play 3-4 TED. I took him for a sideline to sideline 4-3 guy. I guess they thought the same of Donnie Edwards... you'd have to see for sure. I would rather us stick with Bart Scott. No idea why people are talking about replacing Bart Scott.

What about the RT position? Doesn't anyone think that we may need a MAJOR upgrade there?

I am as big a Bart Scott fan as anyone, but it is hard for me to deny that his game has been falling off recently. He was a necessary overpay, but he is not a solid role player anymore.

And TEDs/JACKs are like the power backs of the defense. They take a ton of punishment and the injuries compound themselves. The Jets need to get younger at the position.

Both Pace and Scott have their contracts for this year guaranteed - neither of them is likely to be going anywhere (though Scott does have an offset clause so it is at least possible). It is certainly going to be the last year for each though (Pace is slated to make $11.5m in 2013 lol)

i honestly think we need to stay away from big names this off season. every time we go after a big name and they don't work out (which has the been the case lately) we set ourselves for a spiraling disaster as a team and fans. lets just focus on getting a RT/S and a blocking TE. I know hunter wasn't let go, but hopefully he'll just be an expensive backup.

i'm not really sure why everyone's in love w/ braylon. he had descent season with us, nothing great and he's only had one season in his career over 1000 yards. if we want a WR lets go some where else - vjax, garcon, d. jackson, manningham, fllody, evans

Half those guys are going to cost more than we can afford, and the other half never did as much or more than Braylon who you knock down. I don't even knowk who fllody is supposed to be.

Braylon did a lot more for this team than you can show with just stats. Part of the idea w/bringing Braylon back is that he should be cheap. He also has chemistry with our QB.

Braylon is a no brainer if he is willing to come back on the cheap. Would love to see the Jets bring in Levi Brown and a S, either Griffin, Branch, Goldson or Lowery.

I'm all for Mario but that just isn't realistic, he is going to command way too much money on the open market.

sorry i butchered the name - i meant floyd. yes i agree they'll cost more than him, but none of those guys (as far as i know) are coming off back to back years w/ knee surgeries and they have produced more than braylon. dont get me wrong, braylon played well when he was with us, but i dont think the chemistry everyone's talking about is going to be there right off the bat.

I think its just that we already have 1 very expensive receiver that isnt going anywhere and we canot afford to pay two guys top dollar, which is the only reason edwards moved on in the first place (because at that time he was wanting a contract like holmes)

    Safety
I'm ok with Lowery coming back as safety. As others have said, he should have moved to that position with the Jets anyway. Then we might still have cook as a b/u player. I think releasing Cook was a mistake in spite of what under-the-covers might had gone on. However, we should really consider an FA safety as well. And if not then should be priority #2 in the draft.

    WR
Braylon: Chemistry with Mark, will come cheap, not a locker room cancer, excellent in run blocking. This is all pending how well his knee has held up - So a huge if. VJax is going to command some serious $$$. So you can forget that. You have a better chance of getting Garcon, Colston, or Wayne. We should still be drafting a WR - 2nd or 3rd round. Blackmon is going to be too rich for the Jets and I am hoping Tanny doesn't jump up for him.

    PassRush
This should be Jets #1 priority. Draft a PR and look for a FA PR. As much as i would love to see Williams here, there is no cap space for him. We will have to go 2nd tier. Scott and Pace are staying at least for 2012 due to cap. Hopefully Maybin can get picked up again and can improve his technique. Mathis would also be a great pickup but I think his dollars are going to be too high.

    OL
I would definitely draft someone and try to pick up one or two guys via free agency. Nicks will command money as well. So as much as I would love to see him here, he isn't going to be here. This area is a huge if because Sparano is going to change the entire culture of the OL and its blocking schemes. Its very possible (although I still think unlikely) that Ducass develops and Schlauderhoff (whatever) improves. If Turner is healthy, he definitely needs to be resigned.

I know I am regurgitating some information but I definitely agree that this draft is going to be key to the Jets. We need as many picks as possible this year and next and I really hope Tanny and the FO see this. I would like to see some premier guys drafted but moving back in the first and 2nd are fine with me as long as they are picking up extra picks for this year or next.

I think we all need to come to the realization that this year there will be no large, long term big money deals given out. Next season when some serious cash is freed up will be the time for that. Some quick thoughts.

The focus of this offseason should be SPEED. This team NEEDS SPEED in the worst way. Especially at LB & S. A scatback would be nice too but hopefully McKnight can be that guy. Gonna have to give him a chance this year. Draft Michael Floyd who is a big target with above average speed. Re-sign Pouha. Restructure Smith or cut him and keep Pool if he doesn't free up money. Bring back Leonhard. Draft/mid level FA signing of a safety with some speed and coach him up. Ditto at the LB position but I'd welcome back BT on the cheap. Cut McIntyre and keep Mauga as he does have some cover ability. There should be mid-level FA options for a RT or a 3rd or 4th round pick to compete with Hunter. I'd rather play Ducasse at RT than Hunter and line the TE next to him to stretch the edge on passing downs. Vlad will hold his ground as a power blocker at least.

The Jets need a couple of offensive linemen who can hold their own on top of what they already have on the roster. Not a couple of projects but a couple of guys who can keep it together and give the offense a stable platform from which to operate.

I think free agency is going to be the best place to find those guys. They don't need Nicks or a prime guy they just need solid players who aren't a gap in the fence. The reason they need two is that they have a vacancy at RT, and I don't care if they guaranteed Hunter his money he's still not an acceptable RT. Vlad Ducasse isn't going to hold that position down either. If he had what it takes he'd have been on the field last season when Hunter was blowing chunks and destroying the Jets chances.

The other lineman they need is a guard to cover Moore and Slauson. One of those guys is pretty likely to fail next year in the new system, Moore due to age, size and the change in systems and Slauson because he's really not that good to start with.

So they need a solid guy to be able to pick up the slack there and let Slauson (most likely) go to depth at G and RT. Then you have Turner and Slauson as the depth and a real RT and suddenly the Jets line is not a thin mediocre bunch any more.

The other position that might be worth looking at in free agency is a safety. Rookies have a tendency to come in and do the "who, what, where?" thing for half a season or more and the Jets aren't going to contend for much next year if they have that going on in the middle of the defensive backfield, even assuming they can talk Jim Leonhard into not retiring which I think is 50/50 at this point.

Just about everything else should be addressed through the draft. The Jets need to find a ROLB, a WR, another safety, an ILB if they think Mauga or Bellore aren't starting material in a year at the outside, and probably a blocking TE also.
