Bowles doesn't develop a QB - the offensive coordinator and QB coach do. That's why I heard they are trying to get Defilippo from the Eagles to be offensive coordinator - maybe assistant head coach - not sure. Bart Scott was frustrated that people think the job of Bowles is to develop a young QB when everyone knows he is a defensive guy.
It is certainly not Bowles' job to develop QB's, but he needs to get better at making adjustments during games. I'm not sure if he'll get better in that department and it worries me.
I think it's sad that most people don't realize the head coaches job is more of being a manager then it is of actually in game stuff. It's his job to schedule the practices,, manager players, make the tough calls in games, hold players accountable, have them motivated to play etc etc. we have probably a coaching staff of 20 or so other coaches. it's position coaches job to develop talent. it's the coordinators job to call plays and make adjustments. Sure head coaches will "help" their coordinators and some make calls but it's always 1 side of the ball. No head coach calls every play for the offense and defense and develops all the talent. it's impossible. Oh and the coaching staff? that's all hired by the GM. it's his job to to have the best staff, coaches, trainers etc etc. A "team" is a company. period. you have to compartmentalize. You don't yell at the CFO of a company because the janitor didn't mop a floor. it's not his job and he has bigger fish to fry.
Talking about Bowles and developing or playing QBs has gotten so old ... That's why this board has been rather sour as of late ... the discussions here have regressed because all people want to talk about is Bowles, Bowles, Bowles and him not making QBs like Petty or Hack look like decent QBs. It's either Bowles or hiring some fucking Football of Operations shit, shit that will never ever happen.
I don’t think a FQB is a cure all but as you said it makes you relevant every year and would cover up a lot of problems.
true but final say always comes down to the GM. that's why it's important that a HC and GM be on the same page and get along with each other
Bullshit. It's part of the HC's job to make sure this happens. He doesn't have to be involved in the day to day development, but he damn sure needs to know whether the most important position on the team is making progress. Jeezuz! Is Bowles accountable for ANYTHING? Or is he just the overseer who keeps his fingers crossed that those below him do their jobs well? Look at teams that made HCing changes and their QBs improved - is that just coincidence? Hardly! The HC - in this case Bowles - has a direct influence on all the players on his team, and if he doesn't he's not a HC.
Without mentioning he who smirks down 30 or up 30 pts.. the issue isn't whether he calls the plays on offense etc. its what philosophy he wants in molding the team. This is conveyed to the GM to buy the groceries and to the OC to cook the meal as sous chef while the HC oversees the process. Putting a team built for a 4-3 in a 3-4 is not understanding your personnel much like getting zone-blocking pass protecting OL for a ground and pound offense is not understanding your personnel or not fitting your philosophy to the personnel or personnel to the philosophy depending on who was in place when the HC took over, who they drafted, signed as FA etc. He who smirks hasn't shown the ability to create a philosophy on O or D, he hasn't communicated his wants to the GM to support that philosophy, he hasn't surrounded himself with assistants to carry out that philosophy. That in a nutshell is the issue with this team. That is a HC that needs to grow up this year or hit the pavement looking for a new job. What I don't get is why they want to rid themselves of the one assistant that has shown promise to be able to deliver (OC) yet the clown operating as DC hasn't be chopped.
It might not be his responsibility within the current power structure..but therein lies the problem. In a QB driven league, For a team w. a immensely deteriorated offensive roster & infrastructure...w. a hole the size of a continent at QB to go along w. a long history of developmental failure at the position, the current HC has ZERO to do w. the offense, QB or offensive player development. Just another in a long line of "Defensive guys". Offense is not the priority....doesn't anyone see a serious issue with this within Bowles Candidacy???
What's working for Zimmer? Is he hands off like Bowles? Does he sit up in a tower and watch passively as his team struggles like Bowles does? I'm sure that his methods are FAR different than Bowles's.
It helps that his defense is actually good & takes some semblance of responsibility & accountability for his offense. Bowles doesn't talk to offensive players & always needs to "watch the tape". When's the last time he actually watched the offensive coach's film???
He's about as hands off the offense as Bowles is. He is not calling the plays on offense or coaching up the QB in terms of their mechanics. Perhaps they handle adversity or issues differently, but that has nothing to do with coaching the offense. I don't see Zimmer screaming and yelling on the sidelines when things don't go completely his way. Teams struggle, some due to the amount of talent on the team. The Vikings have a great roster from top to bottom, you credit the GM for getting the pieces together.
Do you really think he doesn't talk to offensive players? Or watch film? C'mon Kurt, you cannot be serious. So I guess we can continue these "rumors" or "conspiracy theories" http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/art...ve-Role-/62b39978-613f-40b2-b173-1d4be9a856a0 You think he hired Morton because his name sounded cool? This Jets defense lacks an EDGE rusher and a whole lot of other components, I give Zimmer a lot of credit. Him and the GM are on the same page.
How do you know? How do you know he doesn't override the OC on certain plays? How do you know what he does behind the scenes? In truth we don't know what those answers are for Bowles, but most successful HCs over the years take FULL responsibility for ALL facets of their team, Bowles doesn't.
Zimmer does not override the offensive coordinator's play-calling. Never happened, never will. Otherwise, how else did that OC just get a head coaching job? Bowles has been involved in capacity on the offensive side of the ball. That was proven, by the link I gave to Kurt.
I knew a thread like this would pop up, whenever the fans of this franchise can find exceptions to the rule for a team doing well without a FQB they jump all over the opportunity to use said teams example as an excuse to not needing a FQB. Let's put it this way, 2 of those 4 QB's left have the top 2 defenses in the NFL, so yes, if you have a top nfl defense, you can get by with average at best QB play........ so easy solution, just get a top 2 defense in the league and we won't need a FQB! Great! Too easy, get to is Mac. As for the third QB, the guy who took over an 11-2 team that was led to 11-2 by a guy who was leading the MVP race before going down, went 2-1 to finish the season against garbage teams and won a playoff game where the defense held the Falcons to 10 points and the offense failed to find the end zone once, relying on 5 FG's to win!
Bowles was on record last year that he doesn't talk to offensive players. The media referenced this notion at multiple time frames last season..Perhaps thats changed since last season but it absolutely is 100% fact that he's had that said philosophy at certain points in his time in Florham Park. It's not a conspiracy at all..but I guess you'll do anything to downplay any potential criticism of Todd..including resorting to "Conspiracy theory" accusations. If you're gonna blindly defend the guy around every turn at least have your facts straight.
I don't think you necessarily need a FQB but it would help to have consistently even play at the QB position. We haven't had that in a long time.
