it's going to be pretty hilarious if fitz helps the jets edge out the bills for the last playoff spot making it a full decade and a half playoff drought for them. one of these decades it will happen
My favorite thing about Fitz is his running ability. That part of his game is overlooked. When he was with buffalo he killed us with his legs a lot. We'd have the coverage and he'd take off for the first down. He gets a lot of knock for not sliding but I love his toughness and willingness to fight for yards (I understand that you really don't want your QB taking hits). There have been a few times where it's obvious that he needs to slide but a lot of the times those extra couple of yards are crucial. My boy looking like Vick out there.
i dont think the head first thing is really an issue... even the thumb injury really was kind of a freak thing, i mean he caught it wrong could have happened feet first as well. he is smart even when he goes head first he isnt taking big contact and its getting us some extra yards and some first downs. going head first is only a problem when you are being reckless and not going down early enough
Steelers and Chiefs are far more likely to win the wildcard than the Bills. Even if we lose to them I don't see the Bills making the playoffs.
Listen, Fitzpatrick has played great the last two weeks and overall when you look at his stats he clearly has been the best QB the Jets have had in YEARS statistically. However, he clearly has severe limitations in his game (which is not a surprise or news to anybody). Watching him try to throw anything to the sideline is absolutely atrocious, his deep ball is usually bad although once in a while he surprises you, and there are times that he will go 10-15 throws in a row where he looks like he doesn't even know where it's going. He doesn't make any stupid mistakes like Geno or Sanchez, but he also doesn't have any talent. He's fine for this year, but I would definitely like them to do some "shopping" this offseason.
Those are fair points. But unless we could get Brees..or to a lesser extent Stafford, I think Fitz is going to be here next year and most likely be the favorite to open the season as starter. Well most likely draft a young QB in the first 2 or 3 rounds but there's no reason to go get another stop gap when we already have a decent one.
I'm all for another year of Fitz if Brees/Stafford aren't obtainable. However, I'm not down with drafting a QB yet again. I'm anxious to see Petty under center and given a shot.
I agree that his deep ball is pretty poor but what he lacks on the deep ball he makes up for with accuracy. He puts the ball right where it needs to be most of the time. Our WR just haven't been making the catches. His accuracy is definitely well above average. Fitz is a pretty good QB for sure. He's the best QB that's available for us in the immediate future so we should stick with him for a bit. Stafford or Brees would be the only better options but they are both long shots. The Lions and Saints aren't gonna let those guys go unless Brees or stafford don't want to stay
I say, go two or three years with Petty on the bench learning everything. That's the smart move - it works out more than it doesn't. Teams always draft QBs high and expect instant results. Let's take our time with this one, Fitzpatrick is a perfect bridge QB to the future. Maybe not perfect, but the best one can reasonably hope for. He's not losing us games at this point, and yesterday, he won us one with his smarts and also, to a lesser extent, his athletic ability.
Also: you give up a high round draft pick for Stafford and sign him long term. He's a bonafied arm talent with a lot of tread left on the tires. That would be an amazing move if it could be pulled off. Brees is going to be 37, at this point, just stick with Fitz, the inevitable dropoff with Brees is imminent. No point in pursuing that one.
If your team needs 40 pts/gm and 400 yards passing every weak to overcome a bad defense, then Fitz ain't your guy. But if your team only needs 24 pts/gm and 200 yards passing, with no dumb ass plays, then Fitz is your man. And he ain't gonna break the bank. Plenty of dough left over for the MoWilks and Brandon Marshalls of the world.
Giving young QBs the proverbial "shot" is what got us in trouble in the first place. If Petty is any good, then competition will only make him better not hurt him.
Twice, back-to-back. Obviously there are the exceptions that get thrown into the deep end right away and survive, but they are the exceptions and having watched the Sanchez/Geno show flame out, I am more than willing to wait 2-3 years for Petty to sit and learn. People forget that even a cerebral QB like Pennington was no where near ready to start right away, based on his own comments. And when Hackett and his WC offense came to town he was completely lost - again, his own words. Got to have patience with these kids while they adapt to the NFL...
really? i think he does this pretty well.. especially last game. I can recall about 4 very clutch outside passes in the 4th and OT
I'm more in favor of having a guy compete for the job than sitting him just for the sake of it. Sometimes guys are more ready than you think and visa versa. Let their play on the field dictate whether they play or not.
Kinda fucked up it took Fitz 11 years to play for a playoff talent level football team. I think he'd be way more respected if he was on better teams
