Tannenbaum traded up ahead of the Vikings so they couldn't draft him, which marked the second time in two season the Jets traded ahead of the Vikings for a player they shouldn't have(Bradway, Nugent). I'm also throwing the panicked Schlegel selection in there. So he has 3 mistakes, two of which came in his rookie year as a GM.
Pouha was a reach, was that Bradway or Tannenbaum. I think it might have been Bradway's last draft. Looks better now, right enough. On the Bryan Thomas level of error.
Bradway. He was an older, 3rd round, developmental pick. We could have had Nick Pillhead Kaczur in that round, but Herm never thought OLine was too important.
Getting O'Brien in the second half of the first round was a huge steal. Almost every other team in the NFL also passed on Marino. Let it go. With that being said, I still want Sapp.
The point is that a bust here won't break the team and the Jets don't need to rely on this player to turn the entire franchise around. Yea, it'll be huge if the guy turns out to be a beast but we don't need him to be a beast.
That's my point, there are no guarantees Marino would have had the same career here. Although he was at his best when he first came into the league, which is also when the Jets were still good from the Walt Michaels era. So maybe we could have made a run in the 1984-86 window with Marino but we still did pretty well with O'Brien and neither guy ever did win the big one. Maybe you can make the case that Marino with that team goes further and wins it, I doubt they'd beat the 1985 Bears, perhaps the 1986 Giants. We'll never know. When O'Brien was drafted Richard Todd was 30 and coming off his best two seasons, so O'Brien was drafted for the future, which is pretty much how it was done back then.
Yep, the unsexy pics are never really appreciated until a few years down the line (pun intended). We still have to look at O line. As you point out, theres no point in having a franchise QB if hes flat on his back every snap.
Other then Gholston we have been making damn good draft picks the last few years so even if we dont need it im excited to see what we do. Not to mention mike trading up tannenbaum is making the picks.
That's what I was going to say. It's great to finally not have to worry about the Draft as much. I guess that's why we never really see too many Giants fans at Radio City on Draft day.
When you look at that overall draft it's hard to complain. We got Brick and Mangold in the first round and since QB was a perceived need they made a move for one they thought could work but didn't go crazy. Remember there was Vince Young, Cutler and Leinert at the top of that draft, we could have passed on Brick for any of them except Young and it's a good thing we didn't. In hindsight Young would be the only one of that group I'd want, while Brick and Mangold are anchors of our line, not to mention we got Leon and Brad Smith later in that draft. As it turns out QB wasn't that much of a need anyway, since we've had three winning seasons out of four with Clemens on the team, albeit no thanks to him.
I thought it was an excellent draft. They missed with Clemens and Schlegel, but getting the Smiths and Leon in addition to Brick and Nick pretty much saved it.
i agree with all who say that we dont need a make or break player for once. its really quite nice that we can go in and get the bpa and make him the best he can be and not have to rely on him right out of the gate.
I wasn't really expecting too much from a 6th rounder. Although for the amount of big plays that Coleman has given up, I guess he deserves all the ridicule he gets.
He should have at least gotten away with tripping a WR on a seam route once at this point. The guy can't even cheat.
I feel the same. I'm not concerned with this draft at all, although I have a feeling that we lose a significant player from this team in a trade today. I just got this feeling.
