Seems like King is bringing it up. What I got from the article is that is something they have done in the past when playing the Pats and King didn't have anything better to write about this time.
ah i see. well king is the ultimate clown then. surprised he would throw his precious patriots under the bus.
Don't understand where you guys think he's in love with the Pats? He threw more gas on the fire than anyone during Spygate, and belichik despises him and won't even talk to him. Because he has to maintain his journalistic integrity somewhat and give the Pats there due when they are playing well? That makes him a Pats lover.... If he loved the Pats, or even liked them, he wouldn't have tossed out this half-assed report that some unnamed source says that Manning is worried that the Pats may have the Colts lockerroom bugged, even though he himself said that Manning never actually said anything like that. Maybe Polian's paranoia is rubbing off. The same Polian who piped in crowd noise. Maybe Manning knows his team does it and figures others do it also...
Unless he knows that this is going to "Blow Up" soon and he wants to get as far away from the wreck as possible (along with being able to say "I reported it first") I have a feeling that he is just covering his ass with this article.
i wonder if brady reviews the tapes and sends a lackie into the locker room afterwards to ask one of the opposing players back to his hotel room.
You guys are such babies. Peter King "reliably heard" that Peyton thinks the locker room is bugged? Great story, let's print it.
lets see, why the Pats did something wrong, they weren't the only ones as Jimmy Johnson said. In fact, the Jets got busted for the same thing the year before but no one pushed for the league to handle it. The Rams SB taping was proven to be a complete fabrication. And now this little tidbit comes out, sounds more like irresponsible journalism and people hoping that it would be true.
Really Jimmy Johnson said this? Do you have a link because I watched every single Fox Pregame show immediately following Spygate like I do every week and I never heard those words come out of his mouth. I heard him spin it to make light of it but I never heard him or anybody else say the Jets got caught the year before. I guess it was just one big conspiracy against the Pats right? As for this story, what a joke. What is King trying to do? Give Manning an out when he chokes (oh wait he already did that) I suppose Bill Polian is still pissing over the fact that the Pats own his and Manning's ass. Wonder why the Colts had to pump in artificial crowd noise against the Steelers a few years ago or why the rules were changed to help them win. If there was any validity to it the NFL would have been all over it. King has always been a hack and this just proves it even more.
I try to make it a rule not to get involved with "Spygate" debates, because it's a complete and total waste of time for everyone involved. I know I'm not going to change anyone's mind about it, so there's really no point. It's best to just leave it be. That said, I'll chime in just to give you some links. But first... As a Pats fan, I imagine the feeling was like when you have a teenage child (I don't, yet) who gets in trouble. You don't give up your loyalty because it's ingrained in you to root for your team, but of course you're disappointed because you know it will hang over your head forever. The earlier poster was right about Jimmy Johnson . His comments have been consistent since the story broke. http://www.bostonherald.com/blogs/sports/rap_sheet/index.php/2008/02/23/jimmy-johnson-thinks-spygate-is-overblown/ Q: How about the spying thing Jimmy. You’re a coach does that bother you what Belichick did? JJ: Oh please. I’ve said it on our show. Eighteen years ago a scout for the Chiefs told me what they did, and he said what you need to do is just take your camera and you go and zoom in on the signal caller and that way you can sync it up. The problem is that if they’re not on the press box side you can’t do it from the press box, you have to do it from the sideline. This was 18 years ago. Q: You think the NFL came down too hard on them? JJ: No, no, I said it on the show. He was wrong for doing it for the simple reason that the league knew this was going on not just in New England but around the league. And the league sent out the memorandum to all of the teams saying you cannot do this. And so that’s when Bill Belichick was wrong. After he got the memorandum saying don’t do it any more, he did it. Q: Did you ever steal signals? JJ: Oh in a heartbeat, yeah. Yes I did. Q: Via video, Jimmy? Or no? JJ: Oh yeah, I did it with video and so did a lot of other teams in the league. Just to make sure that you could study it and take your time, because you’re going to play the other team the second time around. But a lot of coaches did it, this was commonplace. Q: But did you do it by taping the signal caller? JJ: Yeah. Q: Oh you did. JJ: That’s what I’m saying. I was saying one of Marty Schottenheimer’s scouts, Mark Hatley, who has passed away now, Mark told me that’s how they did it, and Howard Mudd their offensive line coach with Kansas City, who now coaches for Tony Dungy, he was the best in the entire league at stealing signals. Q: Where’d you put your guy who was videotaping? Where was he? JJ: My guy was up with my camera crew in the press box. So you’d just put an extra camera up with your camera crew in the press box who zoomed in on the signal callers. That’s the best way to do it, but anyway you can’t always do that because the press box camera crew might be on the same side as the opposing team. If they’re on the same side as the opposing team that’s when you need to do it from the sideline. Cowher's comments (fairly recent) were interesting too: http://espn.go.com/blog/bostonnew-england-patriots/post/_/id/4674702/cowher-tips-his-cap-to-the-patriots Cowher also touched on the Patriots being penalized for illegal videotaping procedures in the context of whether that should taint the team's accomplishments. "Listen, there's people stealing signals all the time before that," Cowher said. "You have ways to hide those things. We had wristbands for our defense. I remember trying to get offensive plays and see what the formations were. Everybody knows. ... You're trying to gain a competitive edge. Did that go beyond it? To a degree. Do I think that helped them win football games? No. You still have to go out and play the game. I still have a hard time believing that was a difference in a game." And Shanahan said this way back in 2002: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/inside_game/magazine/life_of_reilly/news/2002/01/09/life_of_reilly/ "Our guy keeps a pair of binoculars on their signal-callers every game," says Broncos coach Mike Shanahan. "With any luck, we have their defensive signals figured out by halftime. Sometimes, by the end of the first quarter." Of course the "but everyone else did it" mantra doesn't make it right, or make it go away. But FWIW, I think there's substantial evidence that this was a pretty common practice in the league at one time.
I have a reliable source that is telling me you didn't even read the thread before making a retarded comment.
The fact that Patriot fans peg the ethics of Jimmy Johnson as rationalization for spygate is simply laughable. BB is obsessive to a fault with eliminating wasted resources/time when gameplanning, physical preparation and in game analysis. Why would he dedicate so much of his resources within this surveillance operation and risk significant sanctions if caught, if this DIDN'T help win games? One of the main draws of football is the game of chess within playcalling. Coordinator's trying to figure out the opponents tendency so they can scheme accordingly. Figuring out the playcalls pre-snap gives an opponent a HUGE advantage. I'm sure the Patriots are still doing some form of surveillance b/c I think it's just a part of the way BB conducts his business. But until there is more concrete evidence and accusations..I'll hold off further criticism.
Patriots fan 1 - Hey dude, why are you butt-banging that homeless man out in broad daylight? Patriots fan 2 - Jimmy Johnson said everyone was doing it, so it must be alright. Patriots fan 1 - (starts looking for a homeless man)
If I'm "Patriots fan 2"... Not at all what I meant - in fact I said that at the very end of the post. You know, the part you didn't get to because the first part pissed you off too much to keep reading. I was only offering up links and info. Like I said, not a debate I care to get involved with because there's no way to win it. Opinions are opinions. Happy Turkey Day....
I actually didn't read your post, thankfully in retrospect. 'Pissed me off'. Cute, but the fact that your team lost a first rounder, lost the Super Bowl and completed the GPC tempers any affect your words would have on me. I just love to laugh at Pats fans when they rationalize their cheating team. There's always a thread like this a couple of times a year where you turds rifle through the scores and years of Pats site anti-cheating research to back up your claims that you team didn't do anything wrong. Even though 31 other fanbases know different. By the way... you'll always be Pats Fan Number 2 as far as I'm concerned.
