Anyone who thinks Sanchez is better than Schaub is either high or crazy (or both). Sanchez is garbage. Schaub is a good qb who had an off-year.
Having Foster, and Andre Johnson helps your numbers a lot. Having Pre season casualties off our division rival start doesn't help your numbers, ie Clyde Gates.
I know the Jets almost traded for him when he was with Atlanta. I hope this happens the is the classic case of a good QB needing a change of scenery.
This is backward thinking IMO. We need the best starting QB we can field, whether it is Geno or someone who beats him out of the job. We gave Mark 5 years to prove himself, should we give Geno 5 years also? I don't think so, we should get the best QB available and whoever wins the job starts.
Schaub's not a backup if he comes here. He will beat out Geno Smith in TC and start week 1. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Schaub is a good QB, the guy just needs a change of scenery.
If Geno did beat him out it would mean that he made a ton of progression with his fundamentals in the offseason. Either way we've upgraded the QB position.
Schaub would be a good addition. He's an upgrade over any quarterback presently on our roster. If Geno beats him out, then we have a good veteran backup. If Schaub wins the job, Geno can learn playing behind him.
Its a short term solution but I think Schaub has reached his ceiling and honestly his ceiling is not to impressive. The thing that intrigues me though is the Jets wont need a QB that has to carry the load, Schaub isnt a turnover machine either. Im kinda conflicted just because Geno's ceiling might be a lot higher but it will take time to reach that. With our young D-Line this team is suddenly opening up a title window again and we need to have the right QB back there.
Out of all the QBs that have been talked about this off season, Schaub ranks #1 for me. Better than Vick, younger and a solid player. Only concern is his injury history.
After reading the entire thread, I'm on board with all the opinions expressed in it. Basically, folks have said that Schaub would be a good veteran backup if both (a) he comes with a low cap figure, e.g., below $4M and (b) costs near nothing, or an addition-by-subtraction piece, to acquire. If either condition was not met, Schaub would not be a good pickup. Definitely agree with all that. The poster who said that it's unlikely that Schaub will want a backup role is correct. Several teams like the Browns, Vikings, and Jaguars all have no commitments to last year's starting QBs. Additionally, teams like the Bucs, Raiders and, to a lesser extent, the Fish and Bills are in similar positions to us: young, unproven players starting at the most important position in the game. If Schaub has a choice, and wants to start, those are equally, if not better, landing spots for him. Which is to say, unless it's a trade, he's most likely not going to end up in Jets green.
A similar thread on a texans board about sanchez funny how when its some else's trash it has upside but your own trash no so much. I would rather have neither but this is the jets http://boards.houstontexans.com/showthread.php?t=40857&page=2
Totally agree with you on this. This is by far our best insurance policy, at the right price of course. If Geno digresses in his performance, Matt is an excellent stop gap game manager we could go with and not forfeit the season. Further, if Geno is not the answer, Matt could go into next year as a starter and help groom our 2014/2015 QB draft selection.
Schaub had a bad year but maybe he can bounce back. He's not exactly a top flight QB but he would either beat out Geno and thus be an upgrade over what we have or be a good backup if Geno gets hurt or needs to be benched which is valuable as well. This assumes he's cut, I'd rather not trade for him unless it's like a 4th or 5th round pick or something. I'd rather not draft a QB unless an amazing one falls into our lap and depends on other QBs that get cut but I'd rather have Schaub than the likes of Vick. I'd really like to get Cousins but that's probably going to cost a lot more in a trade so it might not be good value-wise.
Imo, Smith has not earned the right to be inked in as the starter. SO there's that. Your argument contains some implicit problems with logic. Why is signing a vet Qb, any vet Qb, "giving up" on Smith? It is in fact not an either/or choice here. If Smith is the better Qb, he will start anyway. No one as far as I can see here is suggesting Schaub would not have to earn the starting job. If he does, you know what that is called? Upgrading the Qb position. Why should anyone be opposed to that? It is not about being "fair" to Smith. It is about putting the best players on the field. As far as Schaub is concerned, I am not a fan or anything, but it is intriguing that he seems like he could really use a change of scenery. If someone else is better suited to the Jets than him, get that person. But Schaub is better than several other possibilities, including a fragile Michael Vick. And much better than just handing the starting job to Smith on a silver platter.
