I can't understand why people would be mad about aquiring a starting RB for peanuts. Barlow is a decent player, just has lost his confidence playing for a crappy team and behind a crappy line. Something no one has mentioned is that he is a great pass blocking RB, which is a weakness in all of our RBs. Crying about a 4th round pick (or less?) is senseless, i know there are diamonds in the rough, but Barlow is way better than what chances say we'll get.

Now it looks like Houston might be the one to go, I know people on this board are in love with him because he gave us something to root for in a 4-12 year last season, but in the preseason games so far he has missed many blocks (almost getting Glass Pennington hurt) and fumbled in the redzone twice.

Blaylock is hardly a tough runner either. Why wouldn't Washington make a good 3rd down back??

We gave up a 2007 4th rounder, I'm pissed, and it can go up based on incentives. We already had 3 backs that could've carried the load, barlow is no improvement, imo.

He COULD end up turning into a poor man's Corey Dillon for us...He's coming off of a team he hates and he might want to prove something.

Because unless you're Paul Hackett and draw on 3rd and 10, usually a run play on 3rd down means a short yardage situation where the defense knows that the run is coming. Washington is small and he doesn't hit the line hard (right now he's spending a little too much time in the backfield.)

That's not what you want on 3rd and 3.

I use to love Kevin Barlow. The year he came out in the draft I wanted him more then Lamont Jordan. But I dont like him anymore and I dont like this trade. My best friend is a big Niner fan and he hates Barlow. He says he is a cancer and that he and his FB(Beasley) would fist fight each other all the time. I dont like this move. I am willing to wait and see but I dont like it at all.

By third down back I didn't mean a short yardage back as you described but I meant, and I think WhiteShoeWillie meant as well, a 3rd down back, one who is speedy, capable of turning the corner and catching passes. Which is the mold that Both Blaylock and Washington fit. Although I would imagine that Washington will have to improve his blocking to fit in such a role. I think we just disagreed in terms of semantics not their actual role.

Are you serious? None of the guy's on our roster now can "carry the load"...Barlow is huge and he is proven. Goal-line runner and he can run the clock down...a much needed help for the backfield.

A 3rd down back is usually someone coming out of the backfield to catch a pass on 3rd and long.

Are you sure about that? From what I read on the 49ers boards, he isn't very physical for his size and tends to dance behind the LOS instead of just plowing through.

What exactly has Barlow proven? Cause he certainly has not proven that he could be a feature RB.. If you are talking about that he has proven that he could be an ass, than I agree..

I would have liked to see Duckett here for one reason. Next year we will be drafting a RB in the first 2 rounds. A guy like Duckett can become a goal-line bulldozer for us. Barlow hasn't shown much, one season yeah, but other than that his career has been dissapointing. Hopefully he can turn it around.

I for one thing it's a great pickup, he's better than Suggs and came cheaper. Behind a better line, I can see Barlow putting up a quality 1,000 yard season with some decent patch catching stats and solid blocking. At least we'll now have some semblance of a running game to keep the opposition honest.

barlow sucks, i don't get it. he averaged a whopping 3.1 yard per carry last season.

    Blaylock is better.

Isn't it about time we stop judging RBs by 1000 yard seasons. 1200 should be the benchmark these days. As for Barlow he has had exactly one 1000 yard season and he just barely made that.. He has talent but he also has attitude and IMO is just as much a ?? as the Rbs we already had..
