I agree that steelers loss fucked me up when they teased a comeback in the 2nd half all the way down from 17-0. Only they couldn't get to Ben or stop them on 3rd down. What a fail after that big win against the Pats and Bart's "can't wait" That felt like our year
I vaguely remember the 98 game so I won't say that one. For me. It's any combination of these 3 or 4 games 1) Doug Brien game @ Pitt. 2 chances with 2 mins left on the clock and he missed both. I remember sitting in my Vilma jersey jaw to floor 2) Week 17 Jets @ Bills win and get in game after beating NE the week before in an insane game. That year I really believe the AFC was so wide open. I can't believe we lost that one. Fitztragic 3) @ Pitt when our entire team was sleeping in the first half of that game. Typical, HUGE win for us and Rex and the team came out flat the following week. If that game was half a quarter longer we probably win. 4) Up 17-6 at Indy with 2 mins left before half and our D gives up a late TD before half to make it 17-13. I can't remember but I'm pretty sure a corner got in the middle of this game and then they absolutely started to torch us
If our injured players that year were 100% I still think we would have taken the Giants. Hell, just Wesley Walker and Joe Klecko would have made a huge difference.
Not a historically bad loss, but a memorable one for me because I was there: Jets at Patriots October 28, 1984. Former Patriots receiver Raymond Berry had just become their coach, and a good friend of mine and I took a road trip with our girlfriends to Sullivan Stadium. Keep in mind, this was before the Patriots became what they are today. The Jets had a 20-3 lead in the 2nd quarter, and still led 20-6 at the half. They lost the game 30-20. The Jets ended the Pats first possession of the 2nd half with a nice sack by Gatineau. The Pats' regular punter was out with an injury, and some guy named Luke Prestridge punted from the Pats' 2 yard line. The Jets played an otherwise ordinary punt into an 82 yarder, that the Pats downed on the Jets' 1 yard line. And that was that for the Green and White. It's all right here: NY Times article: The Jets entered that game with a 6 and 2 record. The Pats were 5 and 3. Both teams finished the season at 7 and 9. Those are my Jets. +++++ EDIT: By the way, I was also at the Spike Game 10 years later. I was a STH at the time, so I've seen a lot of carnage. The Jets had a a 24-6 lead in the third quarter. The buddy I came with lived in Queens. He wanted to leave early, and get a jump on the traffic. I was driving, and I said no. I said, "Not until the game is over. The Jets can still lose this game." He was pissed. You know the rest.
Honorable mention goes to Jets losing to Pats 19-17 at Shea in 1978 on a 33 yard missed FG by K Pat Leahy with only 35 seconds remining in game. QB Matt Robinson played outstanding, replacing Richard Todd, who reinjured his collar bone. Pats went on to win division and Jets went on to finish .500 that season. By the way, this was the same day Giants QB Joe Pisarcik and RB Larry Csonka combined on an inexplicable fumble with 20 seconds remaining in the game which Eagles CB Herm Edwards (yeah, that Herm) returned 26 yards for a touchdown to give Philly an absurd 19-17 victory (same score as Jets game). All Pisarcik had to do on the play was fall on ball and the Giants would have won 17-12. What a horrific day for New York football fans.
Not a playoff game but for me it’s Opening day of the 1999 season when Vinny went down. Seeing Keyshawn cry in the post game, you just knew we lost our Super Bowl chance that day.
Game 1, 1999 against the Pats. We came out as if we were fulfilling the promise of the league's best team. And then the football gods threw the bolt at Vinny. That was our year.
It’s a toss up between the “Can’t Wait” game and the AFCCG vs Denver. Very close, but I’m going with Denver because the Steelers kicked the snot out of us in the first half of that game. We beat ourselves in Denver. Vinny was the best player on the field, but we handed them turnover after turnover. Probably left 20 points on the field that day.
We beat the Colts and Manning in Indy, the Pats and Brady in Foxboro and came so close to Big Ben and the Steelers in at Heinz Field. And before anybody says we would have lost to the Packers in the SB, we only lost to them 9-0 during the reg season that year and they had a ton of help from the zebras. The '98 Jets were a better team and would have steamrolled the Falcons but that 2010-2011 run would have been epic, that's why it hurts more for me.
Remember Sanchez fumble For Pitt TD on 3rd and forever. Could have just run up middle and punted. That was the difference in the game! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
That loss to the Patriots changed the trajectory for the Jets 1984 season. In fact that punt was what really changed it ….the Jets lost that game and then 6 of the next 7 to finish 7-9.
Right, and that wasn’t the only Jets season that ended with a streak like that. I’m sure that we can make a list of mid-season collapses in Jets history. Like in 1986, when they started 10-1, and finished 10-6.
1984 was the forerunner to the history of Jets collapses. 1986,1987,1991,1993,1994, 19……eh I’m getting nauseous..
Absolutely, positively the 1986 Playoff Double-Overtime loss to the Browns. The single most devastating loss I ever experienced as a sports fan.
I just looked at the Titan's first season, in 1960. It seems like the tradition may have started right there, at the beginning. In a 14 game season, they started out at 4-2. They then lost 4 games in a row, and finished the season at 7-7. 1960 New York Titans Statistics | Schedule and Game Results
LOL…. No surprise and now that you mention it didn’t something go wrong in 1967 also? That was a good team - I believe they lost the last couple games that would have gotten them into the playoffs.
