With a late 1 or high 2 we can get one of the better RBs, and 2 OLBs in the first two to three rounds of the draft.
Landry is worth $6 million a year when healthy, and if he is willing to take roster incentives, I would sign him however I could for $ 5-6 Mill a year.
Wow, 15-20 million is a bold number. He has gotten through 1 season healthy, and has many others he hasn't. I would give him a roster incentive laden contract in the vicinity of 4 years 20-24 Million an 7-8 Mill guaranteed.
I wouldn't offer him a signing bonus at all. Offer him roster bonuses (healthy) throughout the season.
Give him the big signing bonus, and watch how fast the injury bug hits him. This is the type of guy that needs incentive to be on the field.
6m a year for a quality player like Landry is nothing, keep in mind Revis wants 12 million a year. Are we not suppose to give anyone money just sign scrubs off the street???
How are we supposed to pay him and Revis with our cap problems? And what about in a year or 2 and we have to pay the best Jet last season, Mo Wilkerson? There is a thing called a cap. You try and keep your best players, but obviously that can not always happen, and sometimes it shouldnt happen. If Landry could sign for 4-5 mil per I would be for that... 6 is probably too steep for us.
Because Revis is still (relatively) young and you can give him a long term to spread it out... Landry has to take a hit because he should realize that was his 1st 16 game season in 5 years.
It is a lot of money to guarantee a player in his position but he's on the market now. Somebody is going to give him a sizeable guarantee. Top 10 pick in the NFL draft in his prime and living up to it with an injury history but a full season just played. Somebody is going to show him the cash. I hope it's not us.
As good as Landry was last year, I just wouldn't feel comfortable giving him that kind of money. Not on the Jets not anywhere. He has upside but he just gets hurt WAY too easily. I think a lot of teams will struggle with the idea of paying him big guaranteed bucks, given his health record.
Yes Revis is young, but he wants 16 million per year. Landry wants 6. We could potentially have almost 35 million tied up in just our secondary if we pay our best players. 32 million tied up in players who have had significant injuries and are over the age of 27. You don't build a defense from the back end... And considering that our likelihood to actually compete in the next 2-3 years is low, then our main focus should be on developing young players and not tying ourselves down with ridiculous contracts (see Revis and his 100 million dollar contract he wants). I just dont buy this "you must pay your best players" crap... It just doesnt always happen. Are the Steelers going to pay Mike Wallace? GB Greg Jennings? The Vikings Harvin? The Colts with Peyton? The Texans with Mario Williams? Those players are amongst the best of their respective teams, but due to cap restrictions (ours still being worse) they could not or can not pay them. And also, just because you may be able to pay a person by restructuring deals, backloading contracts, ect doesnt means its the right thing to do especially when considering the situation of the team (rebuild vs contender). In an ideal world, we never pay Sanchez, Holmes and Harris their huge contracts and we can sign Revis and Landry long term. Sadly this is not an ideal world, and we did give out some of the worst contracts ever.
THIS. We obviously can't keep Cro, Revis, & Landry. If we trade Revis we have money for Landry and our secondary was fine last year with that personnel. We may try to draft safeties, but the only way we lose Landry is if Revis & Cromartie both stay.
I have never been one to say trade revis even when most said let's send him off.. but I really do see now why you would want to . Drop him keep cromartie and Landry and use picks... best option now that we are backed into a corner with these contracts
