That maybe the case but I think next year will be BF last & so we would have to find 2 DE gems in the draft that can play immediately. H'mmm I think that is most doubtful. Then the year after that BF is shooting deer in Mississippi & unless KC is the real deal we will then have a new rookie QB which will stretch us some years further ahead then 2010
It will be and considering the large payroll we now have it will probably have to be done through the draft which is a crap shoot at best anyway. I suggest they take out Coleman on Passing situations and let Gholston line up at De on 3rd downs.
KC or Ratliff could take over, which does push back the big picture to maybe 2012, but finding 2 DEs to take over for Ellis and Coleman won't be too hard. Ellis isn't a terrible DE, he gets the job done. Someone to take over for Coleman I wouldn't mind, but I don't think anyone we draft will supplant the starter next year, it'll be a good 1-2 years until they get it down. If Jenkins helps those two, which I think he will, a lot - the Jets will have a D Line purely capable of stopping people and letting the LBs get in the backfield. Tomorrow, a good barometer awaits this franchise.
You can't play Gholston at DE in the 3-4. He's too small at 260 lbs. It will Mike Mamula him in 3 weeks of play. Mamula did well for the Eagles, but he was lined up at DE when he was a LB and got injured against guys 40 lbs heavier and was not as effective as he could have been.
Well the cap takes another big jump next year. Also if U dump KC & SE I guess you would pick up another 10M in cap room but the key is where do you find them? Any DE worth his salt is immediately resigned or traded. Any DE not worth his salt is allowed to go UFA like KC & when that happens the other teams know he is just another journeyman which are a dime a dozen in the NFL
No I meant the TB with 3 rings who was drafted in the 6th round not the TB who has 4 rings who was drafted in the 1st round
Top notch quality DEs are a very, very rare commodity in the NFL. 1 is tough 2 is like hitting 50M lotto. I am not talking of the SE/KC class but of HUGE upgrade & I sincerely doubt you will ever find 2 of those at the same time. Until then our run D will be just has been for last few years medicore at best. Thinking anything else is quite far fetched IMHO
Don, DE's in a 4-3 are a little easier to find though. The Giants also seem to draft them every year.
Depends how U define "gems"? Lyons was OK or in other words nothing special. Pretty good run stopper but not a big PR guy. Now MG is was just the reverse & we will never know how good he could have been because he had a one track mind PR only so he took himself out of many plays. Even if you say yea they were drafted in the same year & both super duper gems how unique is that. Once in the last 25 years or so making it a most very, very rare occurance. You can say the same about Brady 6th round draft choice steps right in wins 3 SBs. How many who have been drafted in the 6th round have had that type success?
Lyons was a DT, never a DE, he played the run by design. By contrast, Gastinueau's job was to rush because Lyons and Salaam held the middle and of course Klecko was the other DE. Another example of two in the same draft is 2000, when we took John Abraham and Ellis. Both had Pro bowl seasons, just not together. Abraham turned out to be injury prone and Ellis is getting towards the end of his rope, but it can be done. Depends on the draft in a given year and where you pick.
Yep but they acquire them over some years right? It would be interesting to see where there guys were traded & if we picked before them in that particular year who chose instead. It just may come down to dumbness on or FO & smartness on there FO
