Someone who professes such knowledge in the legal and business arenas should know the realities involved with the amount of money that comes into play with a cut-throat industry like the NFL. Realities can change in such time as the span that elapsed between Kendall's restructure and the following off-season... realities such as personal and professional relationships, job performance, free agent opportunities, communication with competing organizations, etc.

For Kendall and his agent to depend on a verbal agreement to pay off in a 7-figure check is ludicrous in this day and age. The team protects the interests of the team first. Spare me the speeches about honor, when you have that kind of money riding on anything, you better have a written agreement that will hold up in a court of law. I'm sure the Patriots would agree with me.

The Jets knew the oral agreement wasnt going to be enforceable, so they denied it. That was within their legal rights. It doesnt make it any less dishonorable if they had a previous handshake agrrement with kendall on it.

They had no legal obligation to live up to what was not in writing. Even someone who is familiar with the legal and business world knows that, but thanks for reminding me. But the risk you run when you screw over an employee like that is that you will have a very unhappy employee, and that's exactly what they got. And it was within his rights to be unhappy and request a trade or release from the contract and seek to work elsewhere.

It doesnt have to be "cut throat" as you describe, but some people are like that. There are other owners and managers of companies who dont treat their employees like that. There are the Dan Snyder's who fly an entire team to a teammate's funeral. He was under no legal obligation to do that.

To each his own I guess. I'm okay with the principles I live and work by.

Liars and cut throat assholes arent real popular with me.

You act like you were in the room when the verbal agreement was made, and have any idea what the circumstances were or the ones that followed, instead of just presumptuously talking out of your ass, like I am becoming accustomed to from you.

Great post. I 100% agree. I still have alot of faith in him, and hope that he'll continue to be the coach of the jets for many years to come, with great success of course.
    btw: GO CANES!

I don't agree with those who say fire the coach , but if I see one Option Quarter back play next year or the Direct snap to Brad Smith , then that's where I start to question both Head Coach (for allowing this kind of Offense plan to be used-Welcome to the NFL) or The Offensive coordinator (Ya got something else in that Green book of your other then a 5 yard corner of the end zone jump catch play?) Usually a rebuilding year has some sort of potential for next year , not a lot of that to be seen this year ! What do we have to look forward to next year? More waiting to see If Kellen Pans out ,or See if we get the personnel to actually use the 3-4 to its advantages? I thought about it ,does this coach deserve a pass ? The off season will tell.

It sounded more like a guarantee than a prediction. He might get canned, or he might improve the team. You might consider this year a fluke like ours was last year and he's just extending his stay. But you can't know for sure.

would anybody on this board hire a rookie mason to brick their house? how about an inexperienced carpenter to build their dream home? the jets house....... is out of square, and the bricks look like shit, and you people keep saying, "let him continue, it will all be o.k., in the end we will have our dream home." blind faith is all you people have. mangini has not done one thing to convince anyone that his job is going to be well done in the end. the more he builds and the more i watch him work on sundays, the more i realize he is not NFL coaching/rebuilder..... material. we should have never hired this man.

Maybe not an inexperienced carpenter, but I see no problem with hiring a guy that worked for arguably the best coach of the modern era for the last 10 years. When he takes us to a championship in a few years, I don't want to hear a peep out of your impatient mouth, cause you didn't believe when it counted.

Just because it snowed this year and he forgot the tarp doesn't mean he doesn't understand what it takes to put the house together.

The Cleveland Brown's defensive rankings over the last half decade:

    2003 - Butch Davis 12th pts, 15th yds
    2004 - Davis, Robiskie 24th pts, 15th yds
    2005 - Crennel 11th pts, 16th yds
    2006 - Crennel 22nd pts, 27th yds
    2007 - Crennel 29th pts, 31st yds

His defense is moving backwards at an alarming rate, moving from middle of the pack when he took over to dead-ender now. The odds on him surviving another season like the last two are low. The schedule will be rougher next year and the league will have seen enough of Anderson to make adjustments.

Developments in the NFL happen for a reason and they happen predictably. There are a few surprises here and there, but they happen within the framework of a predictable environment.

saying "he worked next to the man" is like saying you picked this guy in the phone book because their names were next to each other. mangini is not belicheik, when will you people stop wishing he is? if he takes us to a championship i will be the first to say, " i dont know one damn thing about football anymore!" what are you gonna say when our team is looking for a new coach in a year or two? we are not the new england patriots, no matter how much you people want us to be!!! the mangini way is not the way!!!

    True.

But he's also adding a ton of young talent right now...and the offense/winning season buys him time.

Unless of course...you're going to contend that adding Sean Jones, Kamerion Wimbley, Leigh Bodden, Eric Wright, Ethan Kelley, Brodney Pool, and whoever is actually "moving backwards."

Thats the problem with rebuilding....the young guys will struggle...but like the Browns offense last year...I think that defensive unit is this close to being something.

But in the NFL it takes patience to stick with a guy while he tries to fix sh*t....and NFL fans have no real concept of patience...

You could have said the same thing about the Bengals defense a couple years ago.... Except for in the secondary, young defensive talent doesn't take as long to develop as offensive talent.... If the players are laregly talented, and the defense stinks in all aspects it usually is a product of bad coaching.... In addition, rebuilding doesn't work without solid to good veteran leadership. You can't be a great unit without a decent amount of talented/savvy vets to show the young guys the ropes....

I think their D-line just sucks to tell you the truth. Kelley has played better, but the DE's are just old and crappy.

And I'd think Willie McGinnest is a decent vet to have for "savvy" and leadership.

Old/at the end of the line, isn't the same thing as having a talented vet in there leading the defense... It's nice to have the occasional relic in there too, but you get what I meant...

Belichik got 5 years in Cleveland. His 4th year was 11-5 and playoffs. His 5th year was 5-11 and fired. Crennel is on exactly the same trajectory only he's been less successful than Belichik was and he has failed to build a defense.

Thats kind of a tough prediction to make considering BB never built up the offensive talent like Crennel and Savage have.

It's going to be hard to suck with an O-line that good and young...an elite TE...an elite WR...a QB that everyone loves now...

And it's tough to see that D not improving now that they have a young pass rusher, two very good young corners, a very good safety, a blossoming safety, and a big young NT.

The Browns are trending upwards as a whole...not backwards. I highly doubt they suck next year. If they spend any money on their DL this offseason...through FA or the draft...I think that defense of theirs improves big time next year.

You're basically saying Crennell will fall because the guy he coached for fell? Doesn't make much sense...

No, I'm basically saying he'll fall because he has not built a defense, quite the opposite in terms of recent performance, and he will not be able to deal with the expectations that 2007 will bring for 2008. 5-11 or 6-10 is going to look like a huge step backwards and the reason for the step back will be glaring and obvious.

Why would they step back though? Theres no real reason for it unless he just completely blows it on the D-line. Wimbley, Bodden, Jones, Pool, Wright, Jackson, Kelley....all in their prime (Bodden and maybe Kelley) or pre-prime...

Sorry, but I can't see a defense loaded with young playmakers falling back because you think their coach will break from the pressure of actually having a good team.

This isn't even going to the fact that their offense is so good that he can leave it alone and focus on the D now...all that offense really needs is a young RB.

It's harder to achieve consistent success with a good offense than it is with a good defense... With a year worth of tape on this offense, QB etc., they're very likely not to be as dynamic next season; it happens all the time...

And unless drastic measures are taken on the defensive side of the ball (which does not seem imminent, as the D has regressed since Crennel has been in town), even a small regression from the current level of success by the offense, and the Browns are back to misery...

I see where Br4dway is coming from, and completely agree that that is the most likely direction the Browns are headed

No its not...not even close. Working under a master craftsman for a decade and living down the street from one are two totally different things. I agree that just because he worked with him does not mean he is or ever will be like him. What it does mean, however, is that not only has he been shown the proper way to do things, but was privy to the thought processes behind the decisions that made Belly great.
