I give mad props to Coleman yesterday. He actually just slowed himself down and made Big Ben practically run into. He learned and made an adjustment IN GAME. He could of pulled a Cromartie and jumped in the air and let Ben run right by him.:rofl2:
I've been quite vocal of my displeasure for Drew Coleman in the past...but i'll give him his due....he played like a man possessed yesterday.....well done, kid.
The guy deserves props for coming through on the pass rush, but I'm not going to go overboard praising him. Not when his shitty coverage was a huge part of what made this game so close. Coleman's like Ihedigbo--he's a useful player in a very specific role, but if you rely on him to do too much you'll get burned. The Jets know this, that's why they drafted Kyle Wilson.
Allow me to voice the widely unpopular opinion that Coleman has been among the best dime backs in the NFL this year. That much has been clear to me thus far. Not sure what more everyone wants out of this guy. He's not gonna cover like Revis. He sure has been tackling like Revis, though.
he's not the best in coverage but he made some good plays blitzing. one thomas had ben going down and alertly coleman knocked the ball out of bens hands while he was going down. on the 2nd one he came in and knocked it out of bens hands then when ben picked it up he made the tackle
we ask so much for our corners especially those without an island that every mistake is magnified 10x. he's been pretty solid for what he is our nickel corner (for the moment). also he played great in a huge game for us this week and has definitely improved.
I was of the opinion, as I think many others were here, that the Jets lost the Champ game last year because Manning attacked whoever Revis was not covering. Looking around the league, while there are teams with one great wideout and the rest average or worse, there are also teams with two really good wideouts. So the Jets go and get Cromartie. Now they have two quality corners. Only problem is, there are teams that have more than two good receivers. And tight ends! Who covers them? A subtle weakness, sometimes not so subtle, with the Jets is difficulty covering TE's in the passing game. So here's the thing with Coleman, the rest of the secondary, and Jet LB's in pass coverage - other teams adjust their game plans to not depend on completing passes to whoever Revis and Cromartie are covering. This means as a practical matter that the number of balls thrown the way of players like Coleman go up. It's playing the percentages. The opponents do well if they can succeed passing the ball to their 3rd wideout or TE against Jet coverage of those players. And the more that happens, the more opponents do not spend all game attacking Revis and Cromartie, meaning the less they do that, the more they put other Jet players under the microscope, and the more errors they may make. It is no small irony here that absent top shelf coverage by Revis and slightly less so by Cromartie, opponents would tend to throw to their one and two receiveres, and the more of that they try, the less we see of those guarding third options actually being challenged. My real concern about these guys, a concern that is not diminished if someone like Coleman gets in on the pass rush, is the apparent relative success the lesser receivers of other teams seem to have against Jet secondary players other than Revis and Cromartie.
I've basically just come to the conclusion that he's a good depth player and am not gonna go nuts if he gives up a completion here or there. He's played really well for us, particularly as a blitzer, and has made some key plays.
drew coleman drives me mentally insane. not including this year he was the worst player ever(granted a 4-5th string cb isnt going to play well) but this guy was fucking atrocious. this year he has been out right awful, but has made game changing plays. he still makes me very nervous whenever i notice him on the field. congrats to him having a good game. ? ok moving on, and evaluating him...he is such a risky fuck to have on the field. he looks like a baby with rabies on the field.
ya I'm not saying our secondary dosen't need improvement it's just not the highest priority and Coleman has been solid considering the difficulty of his task. people forget that our team gives up less completions per attempts than anyone else by far. and that's not because of revis and cro.
I think were forgetting Chauncey Stuckey getting stripped by Coleman when they would have probably kicked a field goal after that.
