The Jets are in a great position to get another excellent player tonight. I'm just as excited for tonight as I was last night.
Pouha and Devito had 2 sacks between them last year and 5 tackles for a loss. Something had to be done to fix that.
I get the strong feeling that the Jets have moved on from Sanchez at this point and it's going to be completely on him to change that dynamic. If they don't have a lot of tools on offense next year we're going to be looking at a new QB by 2014 at the outside. It's a shame because they got him cheap and they put in the development time with him and somebody else is probably going to reap the benefits of that down the road.
Looks like the Jets FO pulled off the smokescreen on the fans. They had everyone believing that they liked Ingram so much that when he was on the board at 16 anyone other them him was a disappointment. It worked on me, when Goodell was at the podium I was so prepared for the name Melvin to come out of his mouth that when it was Quinton my first reaction was surprise. Knowing what we know now I don't know how anyone can say we should have picked Ingram over Coples when Rex personally worked out both and was infatuated by Coples and lukewarm on Ingram. Before the draft I wanted Ingram because I thought Rex did. Fact of the matter is Coples has the potential to be the best defensive player out of this draft, his physical talent is off the charts. Sure the lazy label is a concern but it sounds like it might be overstated some and I really don't worry about that with Rex in charge. The Gholston comparisons are absurd as well, there is no similarity at all. Coples has more football talent in his pinky then Gholston did. The problem with Gholston had more to do with having no football instincts whatsoever then it did being lazy. Another thing I disagree with in regards to Coples is the boom or bust label. I don't see boom or bust, more boom or decent. I don't see any way his football skills don't translate to at the very least a productive starter at the next level with the potential to be much much more. I am very happy about Coples and excited about the possibilities of this Dline going forward. Also extremely excited about the amount of talent that fits Jets needs still available. Leading up to draft I was adamant about getting a Wr somewhere in 1st 3 rds, still very possible, but at this point I really like the idea of going D these next two picks today and building a potentially elite unit. With that said I love some of these Wr prospects still available.
Getting Vinny Curry and Markelle Martin in the 2nd and 3rd would make the Jet's D next year scary with the potential to be terrifying.
Great link posted by Schefter on the '81 draft. We picked third and took McNeil. Giants went at 2 and took Lawrence Taylor. Wonder how the fortunes would have differed if we swapped picks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QYsqKjojhI
The Impressions I got from pick # 16 were the following: 1. They didn't feel their was a true rush linebacker worthy of the #16 pick. They may still like a few guys who are still available, but they weren't going to over draft those prospects. 2. They believe strongly in "best player available" philosophy. In the past Tannenbaum has been lukewarm with completely sticking to that..Rex seems to have driven the notion home with him. It helps that the Jets have come a long way in overall roster talent since 2006 or so.When you have an established roster, especially at the top end..it gives you tremendous flexibility to draft BPA. 3. If you remove the character concerns with Coples he is a no brainer top 5 type talent who fits what Rex likes from a plus front 3 player. By the way, Coples former coach Butch Davis(who has one of the best eyes for DL talent in the entire football world)compared Coples to Reggie White. Beyond the best player available aspect...the Jets philosophy seems to be "If we can't improve the rush from the LB spot...Let's improve the front line". Makes an awful lot of sense. 4. The pick reminds me alittle of when the Patriots built their D around Richard Seymour, Ty Warren & Vince Wilfork..or even Buddy's front 4 in Philly with White,Simmons,Golic & Brown. Jets are now loaded up front on the D-line with size, athleticism, wingspan & potential. They will be difficult to block up the middle & on the edges..and that will help the entire defense.
Yep. I would have preferred a rush LB, but figuring out which of these guys would translate into being good 3-4 rush OLBs was not easy. Coples is a physical monster who will help out our pass rush in a different way. If we didn't take Wilkerson last year, I would love the pick, instead I just like it. Rex's excitement makes me happy. And people who are panicking about the offensive line, stop, it's still early. Plus, I think we need a RT more than we need an OG. DeCastro is much more of an OG. I would have been very pleased with that pick, too. I said before the draft I'd be happy as long as we didn't trade up because I felt there would be enough talent there at our pick regardless. That looks accurate as Coples is really talented. It's kind of mindblowing how negative so many people who follow the draft are about this pick. Especially since many of the same people had him in the top 12 not too long ago.
Not saying Coples will bust, and I agree with your #4 point about what the Jets are trying to do but Butch Davis as the best eyes in the WORLD? The same butch davis who once drafted the great Gerard Warren #3 overall when he could have had anyone of these players in the same day (all of whom have at least 1 Pro Bowl appearance) : Justin Smith, Richard Seymour, Andre Carter, Marcus Stroud, Casey Hampton, Kyle Vandenbosch, Aaron Schobel, Shaun Rogers.......
Nobody questions his potential and everybody questions whether he even wants to play football or just wanted a payday..much as Gholsten seemed to act.
Like br4dw!@#$!@$@ pointed out, if he just wanted a payday he would have come out after last year and not gone back for his senior season.
By football world I'm including college. He's widely regarded as a very keen eye for D-linemen. Nfl Network spoke about it right before he came on with them during their senior bowl practice telecast, which coincidentally was right before he came on & gave Coples the Reggie White comparison. As for Warren. I remember that draft quite well(You forgot Kris Jenkins by the way)Warren was widely regarded the #1 Dl prospect. He was above average as a 1 gap(when the whole 1 gap thing was popular) and big enough to 2 gap.Very polished. All those guys behind were considered talented yes, but very raw. Smith was kind of a work out warrior with inconsistent tape,Hampton had weight issues,Everybody behind him had a question mark. He was solid & polished across the board. He played that way as a pro too..he just never developed into an impact player.
I think Butch Davis' of th UNC years should be distinctly different from the U of Miami years. The Canes have put out talent into the NFL regardless of coach. UNC players have been overhyped after Davis' all time great early 2000's Canes teams, but aside from Hakeem Nicks haven't done much in the NFL. While I think Butch is a good recruiter and disciplinarian, I think his rep owes a lot to the fact that South Florida year in and out has the best players (and most in the NFL).
Don't shoot the messenger..just repeating what "they" are saying. One good thing is that Wilk was his teammate and is a close friend.
This- especially only 5 tackles for losses. That's just not acceptable from your starters. I understand d-linemen in a 3-4 are supposed to occupy blockers, but don't you think they'd occasionally make a tackle too?
Ah just googled. They went to HS together. Great quote from Wilkerson. Coples is good friends with Muhammad Wilkerson. The two played together at Hargrave Military Academy. In fact, Tannenbaum said he interviewed Wilkerson about Coples. What did Wilkerson tell Tannenbaum? “Coples a great teammate and he’s a better player than me.”
And on top of that, a mid 1st rookie contract isn't near the "payday" it was. Not the kind you can sign off on, mail it in and then laugh to the bank. Guys play for the second contract now before they become bitches, just like the NBA.
