Meh. Even focusing on the right side, they brought back Colon this off season after he did not play that well last year. At this point I wouldn't think to say Campbell has no shot to transition into replacing Colon, but it is something of a pipe dream.
I would put the odds at a little higher than a pipe dream. its not like we haven't seen players get signed and cut witbout playing or dt transition to og or a 6th round pick become a starter before. I guess it depends on your outlook
The appropriate measure is not whether a player becomes a starter. Not if they suck as a starter. An example is Winters. He only played because Ducasse was just as bad but also committed too many penalties. So to be clear if Colon gets hurt or plays worse, yes Campbell might then get to start. But if he gets in there, will he be any good?
I think we at least have an average core of skill players after this offseason. Maybe a bit below average. I think our line, however, has very little depth and it's certainly a crucial position. If there's a linemen that Idzik believes is worth the 18th pick and fits our BPA draft strategy than I absolutely think we should draft him. Whether we do or not though, I think we should take at least two in the later rounds and hope one pans out. Finding a diamond in the rough at the Oline position would be very beneficial to our offense.
What are your guys opinions on Briant Winters? I know he looked lost as a rookie but does anyone have anything faith that he can develop into an above average starting guard for us?
bump hows this for an opinion on brian winters from a flacons coach: Mike Nolan @CoachNolan64 4h From what I've seen so far, Brian Winters may have been top guard in this draft if he came a year later wow, thats a little sad. just saw that on the TOTJ twitter feed. this is a bad time to need a guard apparently, we REALLY need to hold out on hope that our 2013 o-line picks can step up to the plate. also, relating to this thread I recall reading an awful mock that had the jets taking a Guard in the first, which I'm 100 percent certain WON'T happen. the reason the writer gives? 18. New York Jets (8-8): Gabe Jackson, G, Mississippi State Normally a guard isn't going to go this high, but Rex Ryan has never played by the rules. He's going to do what's in the best interest of his team, which usually involves taking a defensive player. Geno Smith needs help up front to make use of weapons like Eric Decker on the outside. The Jets also need to get back to being more physical up front so they can run the ball effectively and take pressure off Smith's right arm, which was exposed down the stretch last year. After New York signed Chris Johnson to pair with Chris Ivory, Jackson is a logical choice in Round 1. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...value-picks-for-all-32-first-round-selections yeah,no....
Rex Ryan won't be making the decision. Also a Guard almost never goes in the top 20 unless he's incredible. I'd pass.
I think the oline was fine last year in the run game (don't give a shit what PFF says). Our running game was very good. That shouldn't be their biggest concern but I could see them grabbing one if available in round 3-4. We already have guys on the roster that we are developing. No need to go crazy over it. Running game was ranked 6th last year, With CJ we'll prob be near the top.
