It shouldn't effect it much There has only been 2 helmet to helmet hits this yr on the jets Eric smiths blow to welker and Leonards bullshit call vs Denver Simply put the jets don't play dirty they play aggressive but not dirty there is a difference
Did you read the posts? It's helmet to helmet and devastating hits The Jets are known as one of the most physical teams, they have lots of big hits. We just don't know what's accepted and what's not.
In that case the jets r fucked U know belicheat is holding practice right now teaching his receivers to fake injuries on every tackle and kraft is writing the checks to the zebras as we speak
Exactly!! It's going to look like the NBA now, players diving 10 yards after being tapped by a safety who is 30 pounds lighter. lol
There was talk of people being thrown out of games. I'm not sure how they do that unless they have booth review of every apparent illegal hit. Otherwise it's like the innocent guy that gets the chair (if they still had the chair). They might have thrown Leonhard out the other day..then what?
what exactly is a devastating hit. how do the refs define it on the field? Commissioner Roger Goodell, NFL.com Robert, there is no rule pertaining to "devestating" hits and we're not establishing a rule. We are specifically targeting techniques that have a higher risk leading to injury to players. These are clearly defined rules with respect to hits to the head of defenseless receivers that were recommended by our competition committee and approved by the teams. I sent yesterday a memo and video to our teams to show to players and coaches which you can watch on nfl.com.
The NFL is clearly struggling with players that do intend to injure vs. big hits, and there is a difference. Sometimes you can see a guy measure it, time it and go after the head. I think they are trying to make that kind of player think twice about how he plays the game. Some of these players are full of shit too. The NFLPA makes a big deal out of post concussion syndrome, and they are right to do so, but you can't have it both ways. When I played the game, we were taught to get you helmet on the football. you can knock the ball out without knocking the player out, but some NFL players admittedly prefer the later. Harrison says he wants to hurt, not injure. Fine, hit a guy in the chest, knock the wind out of him. That will make him take a few plays off. And make him leery of the next time he goes over the middle too. Head shots don't have to be a part of the game. Big hits can still be administered using the old helmet on football way of playing too. While Leonard was wrongly flagged, he didn't get fined, right? There was nothing wrong with that hit, and the NFL didn't fine him either. Bad ref call. It isn't an easy problem to fix. Even accidental head shots will never go away. I'd like to hear what Chrebet and Toon have to say about it. They have a very different perspective on it than active players do for sure.
It's laughable when defenders try to justify these types of hits. If their fearsome reputation is predicated on being able to use the crown of their helmet to hit a defenseless quarterback or receiver whose focus is on throwing or catching the ball, then shame on them. I'm way more impressed with a guy pancaking an opponent whose actually focused on battling them, not watching somebody blindside a vulnerable player. You can play the game hard, and hit hard, without resorting to leading with your helmet in order to inflict unnecessary harm.
Maybe I'm naive and I guess we'll find out soon but I don't think much is going to change for the Jets. I despise Ray Lewis but his point about how the game is too fast for players to think about what they're hitting while they're in mid air is reality.. (That was paraphrased.) I really think the game will continue and hopefully the Jets won't get in too much trouble. I'm pissed about it but it is what it is at this point.
This is the official video of the new rule... http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-videos/09000d5d81b80962/Player-safety
So basically the Revis hit is illegal according to this video. It was shoulder to the neck area. Get ready to see players faking injuries, which is going to piss alot of people off. The Harris hit on Ronnie Brown is also illegal, though he didn't dive, but he lead with his head. Goddamnit.
I remember hearing on 1050 the other day how Gruden or maybe Cris Carter mentioned the idea of making the field bigger.
Its one thing to fake an injury to gain penalty yards, when a player messes with another player's coin.... Ray Lewis may actually get another ghost on his weapon now.
Exactly, if a defender has to think in a split second, oh shit should I pull up, they'll be the ones getting hurt.
Did anyone think there was a little extra thought put in to the Ray Lewis hit they showed in the video? I think they probably realized how much influence Ray has throughout the league and wanted to make sure they were on his good side with this. Or maybe I'm just reading into it too much. It will be interesting to see how this plays out this weekend. I'm really glad the Jets get a week to watch and see.
Lewis has for the most part, almost always led with his shoulder, and I suspect that has also allowed him to avoid as many injuries as most other MLB's that have played that long in the NFL. He hits hard, but leads with his shoulder. How many concussions has he ever had? This will be an interesting weekend for football. I think it's fair to say that there is a problem, but no one really knows yet how to fix it. I don't think the game has to get watered down, but I do think as they try to improve player safety there will be serious growing pains. Lots of disputes and controversy. But, no pain, no gain.
Making the field bigger means making the sidelines bigger, making the sidelines bigger means you've got to remove prime seats...owners will never allow this
