Stafford would be smart to stay in school because he gets to play with Knowshon at UGA and will still have his choice of the finest tail Athens has to offer. Money can buy a lot of things, but it can't make Detroit women hot.
Brett Favre and Eli have the same quarterback ratings while Eli has way better widereceivers. Ya Eli is overatted if everyone is saying Favre sucks how is Eli a elite quarterback?
I don't want a top 5 QB - it's just too risky. Going high in the draft for a QB means a ridiculous cap charge. If the guy doesn't pan out (Alex Smith), you've screwed your team over financially for a few years. So I'm not a big fan of a very early QB choice. For every Matt Ryan you get a Ryan Leaf. I'd perfer to let Clemens and Ratliff battle it out during training camp. Maybe take a QB in the middle to the late first. Flacco has been outstanding and he went 18th last year.
Gino Torretta wasn't even that good in college, he simply played for a high profile school. Tim Tebow, on the other hand, is great in college. there just isn't a comparrison between the two.
Drafting a QB high for the sake of drafting a QB high is stupid, and throwing him into the lineup is stupider. Look at ManningsRivers/Ben, all good pro prospects who were taken high because they were good. Now look at Alex Smith and Rodgers, who were basically equals going into the draft. One got picked #1, but the other fell like a rock. Was there that a big a gulf between them? No. Now look at what Rodgers has been able to do after all that time as an understudy.
I think what matters most is actually what the team does AFTER drafting the QB. You need to surround a QB with a good OL, a solid running game, WRs that can make plays, and a defense that won't put too much of the game on his shoulders. There's a lot more that goes into drafting a QB than just the draft itself. Look at Roethlisberger; he was great his first two years in the league when he had Bettis to hand the ball of too and an amazing defense. He still has that defense, but the running game isn't what it used to be and he's being asked to do more. He's struggled. It's not just drafting the QB, it's more important what you do with him once you've got your man.
Our ground game combined with better coaching should be good for 7 or 8 wins next season, even if Ratliff is nothing special. If he can be just a great game manager and not turn the ball over, we might have a shot at the playoffs, but a lot of organizational changes have to be made first.
Folks, we won 9 games with Manboobs, Bob Nuttin' and Brain Shot as coaches. With NFL coaches we win the division next year. Lighten up on the players.
the move to get eli doesnt mean crap. he manages a game and nothing more. that offensive line is what makes that team go. and they have been good and getting better for the last 3 or 4 years. on top of that the lack of injuries on the o line in the last 2 years. they have started the same o line every game the past 2 seasons.
pay matt cassell the money he will want after this season...we will have the room for a multi year aaron rodgers-esque deal and he has shown he can play in a system similar to new york
Bingo. So many people missing the point. People are crying about Ryan and Cutler and E. Manning and even Matt Motherfucking Cassel. There is a common thread: good coaching, good offensive line (in Ryan's case a solid O-Line but nothing special), good running game. Do people not remember when Giants fans were gonna pay for the plane ticket to kick Eli out of town? He still throws off his back foot. He's still erratic. He just has a sick-nasty O-Line, an incredible run game, and a defense to back him up when he fucks up. Ryan is really nothing special outside of the intangibles bullshit. He wasn't in college; he isn't now. Chad Pennington has more TD throws. Jay Cutler still really does not look to me like the Second Coming. Quarterbacks are nothing more than what you surround them with. Good coach? Good O-Line? Good run game? Good defense? Even Trent Dilfer and Mark Rypien can win a Super Bowl.
Yes, it's about time the Jets get their franchise QB in the draft. Mangini has now passed on Cutler, Ryan & Flacco in his three drafts without a franchise qb already on the roster. He should be fired for that as much as he should be for the worst stretch of game planning I have ever seen.
