As far as I'm concerned, Geno is the man going forward - until he proves that he's not going to be the man long-term. Based on that, I want us to have the best player, out of those available, to backup and mentor Geno. Given his experience, background and abilities, Vick may well be that man, but no way I want him to start unless it's due to injury. I'm not sure there should even be a competition. If however the FO don't think Geno can ever become a good starter, then Vick isn't and shouldn't be the guy - we have to draft again and start over. I'm not sure the guy is out there in FA - Sanchez might even be the most likely and we don't want to go there do we? To go with Vick in this case would be completely at odds with Idzik's approach to FA so far as well. I'd vote sure why not, but only on the basis of him being backup.
Already had this conversation with ScotsJet. As much as I loathe him as a person, it does make sense to bring him in and mentor/compete (didn't like the options in the poll) with Geno and whoever, Matt Sims? Vick the human being may appear apologetic and doing and saying all the right things, but I'm just not buying it. Ironically his notoriety just promotes all the great animal welfare groups. If I were at metlife in the crowd (wow, that'd be nice ) and Vick runs on as a Jet, I would love to boo him, but he would be a Jet and think that people should rise above this and be the better person. Vick knows for the rest of his life what he is most famous for.
Why all the talk about restructuring Sanchez? Not a snowballs chance he would do that when he thinks he can start elsewhere. Not even an option IMO
While he has a checkered past, which we all do, he paid his debt to society. What impressed me the most was how he turned things around and the mature way in which he handled the derogatory comment made by Riley Cooper. Everyone was bashing Riley Cooper and Vick who obviously has learned about being forgiven and getting a second chance, came to the defense of his teammate and gave him the benefit of the doubt. Supported his teammate while he was taking his lumps and supported him until all the frenzy had died down. That is the kind of player and man I want to see on this Jets team. And I think he will help Geno to grow up a bit also. JMO
I said it from the beginning if Vick signs here it is to start not to mentor. Unless Geno made some huge jump he has no chance of beating out Vick who has played in the WCO for a few years now. All this stupid talk about rebuilding the Jets get a legit QB this season no doubt they will be contenders.
Personally I think he would be a good addition to the QB competition. I'm in the camp of 'he paid his dues' regarding the dog thing, and he seems to have turned that page in his life, but that is a stain that will never wash off. My wife on the other hand wants nothing to do with him and said she won't root for the Jets this year if he is brought in.
I think that most people who don't want him on the team would root for him if he helped the Jets just like any other Jet even if they say they wouldn't now.
Imma dog lover but I love the Jets too. Bring Vick in to mentor/push Geno in training camp and then back Geno up during the regular season and the playoffs.
History of dog fighting.First off I do not agree with dog fighting or any cruelty of animals whatsoever. The Pitbull Terrier was created in the late 1800's in England. The reason for it's creation was for fighting in the "Pit" while rich Englishmen wagered big bucks on these fights. The dogs were introduced to America where the same tradition continued until it was later outlawed. Point being , we have become so hippocritical in this society. It seems anything is legal when a certain segment of society benefits monetarily. Marijuana - becoming legal for government tax purposes. MMA fighting - humans beating each other bloody and unconscious but networks make billions. Lottery - street "numbers" illegal because it's not taxed 60% like the lotto.
Not no but hell NO. That being said if we sign him I root for him. Think it will more circus time and hate for the Jets.
I want him if he does not want to start. Look, there is no question in my mind that Vick would beat out Geno in a fair fight. And if I wanted the plug pulled on Geno, I would be fine with letting the best man win. That would probably be a great thing, ask Glenn Foley about it. But since I do believe Geno has the talent to get there eventually, I hate to set the kid back with 60k fans shouting for Vick every Sunday and getting yanked and discarded by next offseason. I think it would set the team back in the long run. JMO.
Not exactly true. They have been bred into a sympathetic/symbiotic relationship with human beings. And yes, in the wild animals that have symbiotic relationships generally do not turn on each other. Look at the fish that clean predators in the ocean. If they were eaten when they cleaned inside the MOUTHs of predators do you think these little fish would do it? No. There is an instinctual trust. Fact is that we've been bred into two schools of thought about nature: one warm and fuzzy and one cold and hard. Both schools think they have all the answers and the irony is that both are wrong. Bt in regard to dogs, there is zero doubt that they have essentially been bred or evolved into a symbiotic relationship with humans and attacking a dog is actually an UNnatural act (this is mitigated somewhat by culture today). Even societies that eat dog do not eat all breeds, they eat specifically raised food dogs. As for being "forced" to become something..... When isn't someone or something "forced" into evolution? If animals weren't in situations of need there'd be no need to evolve as all biological life forms needs would be taken care of. So saying dogs were "forced" to change is kinda silly. So were we when our ancestors learned to walk upright. So were whales when they went back to the sea. And ALL our ancestors were forced to change when they left the oceans in the first place because they were hungry and figured the land might have some good eatins.
I actually played with putting an option in the poll that said "hell no. I'd rather keep Sanchez." You read my mind!
Let me ask this. Does anyone think the FO is considering what the fans think regarding Vick? Is this a good football move for the Jets or just a cheap option? I think its a good football move to have an experienced QB cone in, best man starts.
Falco, not every animal can be domesticated. If that were true people would be riding Zebras, but we cannot because they cannot be domesticated. Admittedly I did not an iguana could be domesticated, I find that interesting. However, I wonder if you are using the term domesticated too broadly. That term, "domesticated", has a very special meaning. You're right that any animal can be put in a cage, fed, and looked at. You can do that with people too. But truly domesticating animals is more than that. I will try to find an article link on a study done with Russian Foxes. This will give you a better idea of the difference. To summarize tho, what they found was that when they domesticated WILD foxes the future generations literally adopted different characteristics and became more dog like. In other words they discovered that certain animals have a gene set that adapts itself well to what we call domestication and it is why some animals can be domesticated and others cannot.
I tend to agree up to a point. But I voted no in the poll. Let me explain. I have a dog, and have had others in the past. I think what he did was awful. But... I can't assume he has not changed, and is incapable of moral redemption. Now, while I do agree that helping the Jets win overcomes the asshole factor to a certain extent, it does detract from the overall experience to think the people on the team are bigger assholes than every other team's assholes. So there's that. In short, I would prefer the asshole factor be limited, even if accepted at a certain level. I also think it virtually certain (assuming he avoided pre-season injury, which Sanchez did not) that he would win the starting job over Smith. Which is a good thing. I really don't care about Smith's feelings in that situation. I can't believe the percentage of homers here who are all in on Smith. (And I am NOT saying he will not improve or cannot improve - I just think it unrealistic to think he will ever become even an average NFL starting Qb, which is the minimal metric the fanbase should be expecting and hoping for.) And another thing is if Vick came to the team that would assure Sanchez's departure, which would be great! But... I think Sanchez is a goner anyway, so that's only a slight gainer. The main reason I voted no is his being fragile sets up the worst case scenario, which is he starts, plays well enough to keep Smith on the bench, does not last the whole season (a near certainty as far as I am concerned), Smith comes in at some point later in the season, with ambiguous results, and we end the season no closer to understanding what Smith's ceiling is than we are now. Plus, even if Vick plays enough to produce a winning record and a possible playoff berth, he probably will not last into the playoffs, so the team ends up going nowhere there, too. When the Jets season ended, I was hopeful the Jets might pick up a less fragile mid level vet at Qb, and then in the coming FA period (the one that just ended so badly), they could pick up enough players to compete. The Jets did neither of those things. Picking up Vick now still means the Jets have too many holes elsewhere to compete next year. They COULD have done that, but did not. I don't own season tickets, and can go another year without the Jets being competitive. So, I am not there yet but am coming around to one of the Smith Fans' points, which is we might as well see what he can do. I think he will fail, and to a near certainty will not rise to a mid level NFL starter, but that alone will be valuable information. So, No.
