i'd probably get rid of most everyone who's contract is up. get less expensive alternatives. this is a six-win team. they can do that with a rookie runner, i'd wager. greene is a luxury, not a game changer.
There is no way Greene will get a contract like Green-Ellis ($3mm per). Greene will get around what he's making now, possibly less. I can see him making in the $750k - $1mm range but that's it and I think I'm being generous. Time will tell.
there are great running backs and then there are the rest. 'the rest' are good when they have good coaching and good blocking. shonn greene is one of 'the rest'. so i think they can replace him for a minimal salary commitment. i do like greene. i think he gives his body up and play 'like a jet'. but in this salary-capped league, he's just not a smart choice.
he would have to come REALLY cheap. otherwise a 28 year old HB who isnt anything special. at a position that might be the easiest in the game to replace
If the market is roughly the same (a big if), I actually think Green-Ellis is a pretty good comparison. A similarly limited back, just a year younger, and coming off just a 667 yard season. Really depends on who is looking for a back and the rest of the free agent crop.
I say no. Greene and Powell run very similar styles, but Powell is younger, cheaper, and (in my opinion) better. I think we should let Greene walk and try to replace him with a speedier back to rotate with Powell (like Stephens-Howling or Felix Jones.)
How much is the RBs and how much is the oline? It's hard to say. All I know is that runs up the middle often get stuffed big time with almost no running gaps at all. I'd bring him back if the price is right. It looks like he's finally getting it.
There is virtually no chance the Jets resign Greene. He can only run ins straight line, has no vision, is not able to cut back and goes down on the 1st hit. He cannot block on 3rd down,he cannot catch the ball out of the backfield and he cannot fill the role of a short yardage back as he goes down to easily upon contact. He has no value except as back-up yo gibe a starting RB a rest. With the drafting of Powell last year, that guy we cut from Baylor this year and our apparent lack of interest in pursuing a deal it seems the FO has no interest in resigning Greene. He can replaced and the position can be upgraded quite easily.
Hell no. Save a few million by not resigning a JAG. He leaves a lot of yards on the field. He will take 5 up the middle instead of breaking outside for a big gain. Bilal Powell has shown more potential and will cost less if we cant get a big play RB back there.
I don't see Greene coming back. Most of the year I thught it was the OL but Greene is not instinctive and does leave alot of yards on the field. We need a giy who can bounce outside and out run a LB and that guy is not Joe Mcknight. No loss if they cut Joe today.
Unless we have no other options I would say no. I'd hope that RB is one of our highest priorities in the offseason. We need to upgrade at that position and bring in a legit #1 feature back and Powell can be the backup. Failing bringing in a legit #1 guy I would be inclined to just make Powell the feature back, sign a veteran 3rd down back in the twilight of their career for cheap (or Greene if he'll sign up for that type of role) and draft a RB fairly high in the draft this year to take some reps, plus the usual camp casualties and undrafted guys for ST and PS, etc. If they can't bring in a legit #1 feature back then they can take some of the resources they were going to use there and put it into improving the oline which should help the run game somewhat regardless of who is running and maybe you catch lightning in a bottle between Powell, the vet 3rd down back and rookies.
He most likely wont be signed till after the draft, in that case it really depends on what happens with the draft. If we can get a two headed monster of Gio Bernard and Bilal Powell, I'd be extremely happy. If not, we'd go back to Greene.
we don't have a #1 rb on our roster. I don't even love Green or Powell as our second string back honestly. We need someone who is explosive, can stretch the field and is a home run hitter. I thought that guy could be McKnight but obviously he will never be what his talents say he should be
Don't be fooled by 1000 yards last year, or even if he does it again this year. It does not mean what is used to mean.
