I'm a huge Mariota fan, but Yes, if we can get a first next season and another first in '17 I'd do it.

We then could use those picks to trade up for a Quarterback such as Jared Goff, Connor Cook, or Hackenberg in the '16 draft.

This is nice and all, but before "riding QB to multiple SBs" you need said QB to be actually good.
From your list, there were 11 first round QBs. Only 4 of them have rings. Add Luck to it and maybe Stafford and you got 50% hit ratio -- the very definition of a coin flip.

If you're flipping the coin, might as well get more chances at it -- get more QBs.

The thing to remember is that Super Bowls aren't won by great QB's. They're mainly won by great teams that have great QB's.

I hate to say it but if great QB's won Super Bowls then Dan Marino would have 3 or 4 rings. Dan Fouts would have a couple too. Peyton Manning would certainly have more than 1.

True 1st round talent or Manifest Destiny?

The NFL is a machine, and any team that drops a 1st on a QB will put their heart and soul into making it work while the backup and especially the 3rd string guy languishes in the background.

To this day I wonder if the NFL would even know who Tom Brady was if not for Mo and Drew shaking hands along the sidelines. Brady could easily have been cut for the next 3rd string QB without ever taking a snap.

Brady was going to be carrying the cheater board for the Pats and signalling in the opposing plays until his rookie deal expired. The Pats didn't draft Matt Cassell to play QB. They drafted him to be the smart very controllable guy who would run the cheater board until he retired. Then Brady got hurt and he actually got to play. Of course Spygate happening in 2007 had already retired the cheater board.

I don't see Mariotta being there at 6. But you're going to find your QB in Bryce Petty in the later rounds.

3 #1s (or more) for Mariotta is crazy. If Kelly really thinks that he can spin Mariotta into gold then he's very full of himself.

Totally agree. This is why I have the greatest amount of respect for the SEA organization. They did not pay lip service to the competition mantra like Idzik did. When it was obvious their 3rd round pick rookie was better than their high priced FA, they did not blink and made the change. Conversely, Idzik did everything he could to make sure Geno was not challenged in anyway while preaching competition. And that's why I have/had no respect for him. Hopefully, Mac and Bowles are like the SEA group and truly allow the best players to play regardless of where they are drafted.

All that said, it doesn't change the fact that most starters come from the 1st round.

I agree with you on this. Chip Kelly has a real ego though. He's trying to win his way and he's been doing that for a long time now. If he thinks Mariota is the golden boy for his system he has to go for it.

Marietta is good as gold for me. Trade schmade.....he will be a star in this league. Mac will not stare a gift horse in the mouth. Plenty of rounds to get the other talent we need but a QB is special. So no deal with Mr. Kelly. BTW if Kelly wants him so bad he must know all about the Oregon kids potential. Grab Marcus!

Apologies, I meant from the article Ledger82 pasted; post #15 in this thread.

Point remains though -- It's a coin flip, so draft more QBs.

Still not sold on the Duck. If we can get some picks, especially if we can get an extra first next year, when the QB class looks to be deeper, we should go for it.

Drafting more QB is wasting picks. You have to draft the right one.

There is one Brady, one Romo, one Wilson and hundreds and hundreds of 3rd through UDFAs that never amount to anything.

Getting a franchise QB is not a coin flip, loading up on "developmental" guys is throwing away picks.

Next years QB class is weaker than this years class AND it won't have the two franchise guys like at the top of this draft.

I would do the deal, their 1st, their 2nd , their next year 1st and Foles! It would make a great Super Bowl in 2 years, Mariotta Eagles vs Foles Jets
