I don't think we have the weapons for him to be successful. We don't have the speedy quick receivers to make and work or the running back to spread the defense. Chip kelly makes it work because he has McCoy and sproles to spread the D and maclin is a burner. If we make some moves this offseason to get some more speed in the skills position than it could help Mariota . But I don't see him being a good pro. And to be honest chip kelly > chan at offensive schemes.
With the bucs bringing on Koetter and Bajakian, I think they're leaning Mariota. I hope i'm wrong. After all the dust settles, MM and Winston are going 1/2. If the eagles, rams, browns or jets want one these guys, we have to trade up. I don't see it happening. Emo rant done.
This is what should happen but each prospect has too many question marks, I think one of them makes it past the 2nd pick and from there it should be better than a coinflip that they make it to 6. So maybe 35-40% overall we get a shot at one or the other would be my guess. If that happens you turn in the pick and don't look back. Winning more games this year is irrelevant, what matters is securing a franchise ,QB and then building around him for years and years. Doing it the other way around is dumb and a waste of perfectly good opportunities to get a QB. If the Eagles want to offer 3 first picks then awesome, but that will never happen and 2 firsts isn't near enough to make it work.
You are right we need a franchise QB, thats why I lower the asking price to make the deal possible. Just give me Foles and their 1st round pick, which I use to draft Devante Parker. Thats a sick 1st round for the Jets, Nick Foles and Devante Parker.
I more or less agree, but I think Foles plus a second this year and next is still a reasonable deal, compared to not only Mariota's questions, but also that I don't want the Jets to have to rush him into playing. I really believe he would be a better fit for Philly, which is a significant factor here, and not such a great fit for the Jets.
If the media has Mariotta going to the Eagles, the only guarantee is that the Eagles have no interest in Mariotta.
If the Jets traded Mariota for Foles and 2 seconds and Mariota became a star it would be one of those franchise-defining moments that haunted us for decades, literally decades.
I understand that risk. But at this point I have not heard enough to suggest that he is that great a prospect. Plus I think Foles would be a very effective Qb for the Jets. I am certainly open to persuasion that the Jets might best be served by picking Mariota themselves. But... I would then want them to get someone like Matt Moore so that they don't have to choose between playing Smith or rushing Mariota in there.
Ok, let's tweak the deal a bit and see if that changes anything. Jets get pick 19 (Marcus Peters CB Washington), pick 20 traded to Cowboys for pick 27 (Erick Kendrick LB UCLA), Rams second round pick, Cowboys second round pick, Eagles third and fourth round picks, Browns third round pick, Eagles second round pick 2016, Eagles 2017 first rounder for # 6 overall. Do you still take Mariota at # 6?
Let me get this straight. We would get 2 2015 1st rounders, 2 2015 2nd rounders, a 3rd and 4th rounder in 2015, a 2nd in 2016, and a 1st in 2017 for just our 6th overall pick this year? Jesus, of course I'd take that trade. Who wouldn't do that? That's 8 picks for 1.
IMO the only thing Geno has proven in his first 2 years is that he is NOT a franchise QB. That doesn't mean he can't be a serviceable back up or stop gap QB. Note this is coming from one of the biggest Geno detractors. I don't feel having a veteran QB is as imperative as some make it out to be. Plus there's no guarantee a guy like Moore would even beat out Geno or Mariota. IMO the most pressing need at the position is competition. There just hasn't been real competition for the job in years. Sadly, 2015 is really year 1 of a rebuild that we thought started in 2013. Given that unfortunate truth, I'd rather be playing young QBs still with potential than a journeyman JAG.
The original trade had us getting: Pick 19, Pick 27, the Rams #2, the Cowboys #2, the Eagles #4 and the Eagles #2 next year Everyone seemed to prefer Mariota. The second trade had us getting the same picks plus the Eagles #3 and Browns # 3 this year and the Eagles #1 in 2017 Everyone seems to prefer us making the trade. The question I have for each of you is what do you think would be a fair trade, a square deal to give up #6 overall with Mariota on the board if the following players are gone? 1. Winston, 2. Williams, 3. Gregory, 4. Cooper, 5. Fowler
I am hopeful that I will never see Smith take another snap for the Jets. As for competition, I have no real concern that Smith would beat Moore out. He won't if it came to that. I just am not a believer, especially after going through the last really four lost years, in holding off with no real effort to field a competitive team in 15 as well while the Jets wait for Mariota to take the starting job over, if it comes to that. I am not bound to Moore, btw, but I do think he would make the Jets more competitive than Smith. The firm belief I would think we all have, cetainly should have, by now is that we don't want to see Mariota rushed in there before he's ready. A vet Qb on the squad gives the Jets some flexibility. Plus they will have the cap space.
It's not rushing in when you win the job (see Russell Wilson). We just haven't had anyone actually go out and win it in a long time.
