I agree the draft looks great. They are setting it up for a new passer. Not an injury-prone, inaccurate and historically less-than-mediocre one. I wouldn't be surprised if Sanjay Lal advised Hill to work out with Geno because he knew both QBs would compete. The pressure on the starting QB of the Jets is far less than it could be. Why waste it on a guy that can't figure it out? The rookie deserves to start. Unless Sanchez separates in this competition, that is the smartest solution. I'm not rooting against him, but Sanchez has never looked this promising, aside from his playoff appearances. Maybe it's a mistake, but after the last couple of seasons, I am willing to risk it. The Jets need to find out what Geno has. If he is not the answer, run with him and grab a blue chip in 2014. They already know what Sanchez has. They aren't going to stumble into the playoffs and hope for Sanchez to be that same guy. It's just not realistic. Lay your sentimental attachments aside. This is a game of futures. Look around the league. I'm right.
My preference would have been to trade down and get more, but if any draft ends up with 2 in top 4, you can't blame that draft; and this time they got that without trading up a la Tannenbaum. Much more reason to give praise for that. From the way I see it, the next three drafts will make or break this franchise, just like it took three awful drafts to derail what once was a promising franchise. The next draft looks very promising, with up to 7 picks in top 100. There are quite a few holes still left to fill on this roster, and 7 picks will do a lot of good for that. I'd like to see them address the LB and S spot once and for all, along with some investments on OL again - all with picks from top three rounds. Even after two picks on offense - be it any combination of TE/WR/RB - they will still have five in round 3 - ample picks to restock the roster.
I was glad to see the firings in the front office and Rex is probably feeling the heat as well and that is also good. Idzik might not be to impressed with Rex and maybe he's holding the reins a little tighter than you would think necessary but Rex may respond well to this. Rex had his way with personnel decisions and also coddled Sanchez to the teams detriment. IMO idzik has every right to ensure mistakes of the past aren't repeated. This draft has serious upside, the approach by idzik was masterful IMO. Getting fiscal stability along with drafting improvement were absolute necessities for the jets. We have limited depth and limited top end talent which is a shitty way to run a team. We arent a playoff team we are a 7 win team with the worst starting qb in the league. Building on the strength of the team(d) and improving depth was the way to go. We will be on solid financial footing next yr with a decent o-line and solid d. We have a young qb to groom and multiple high draft picks. These attributes will make the jets a very desirable destination for coaching candidates. Play the kid, hope for the best. In other words tank the season and get the offense fixed next yr. Let Sanchez hold the clipboard for geno, the piece of shit probably can't even handle that.
I agree that the team lacks top talent on offense..specifically at the skills. But disagree regarding the team's depth. There is young competition everywhere & it doesn't look like any unit is really weak. There are some very deep positions on this team including CB,OL,DL & potentially RB. Those aren't bad positions to have some flexibility at. Truthfully I think the Jets bounce back in a big way this year in term's of product on the field. Maybe not with wins or losses. In fact I think their biggest downfall is just being so young.Sometimes that type of team needs to learn a few lessons in the battle field before they're ready for contention. But there's athleticism all over this defense. No doubt we will see some big plays/turnovers from this group.I also believe the Jets at the very least have a solid OL & raw speed on offense. That may not mean much but those are strengths a playcaller can work w/.By week 13 or so last season..the Jets offense literally didn't HAVE a strength.
Well, I'm skeptical about our lbs and safety's and our interior dl which has potential is largely unproven. We need to hit on a few guys. If we stay the coarse with building this d and coples and rich are legit then watch out in the next few yrs. I can deal with down yrs I've been doing it forever but have no patience for Sanchez or Holmes etc. If the teams going to lose at least give the fans hope for future(sup geno!). We need playmakers in the worst way, not gates either I'm talking about legit game breakers. Next yr is a huge draft for us and given we have about a 1% shot at sb I want to see kids playing not journeyman stopgaps. More than happy to get top five pick next yr.
One of the more interesting decisions this off-season was not cutting Sanchez in June. It was likely made due to the need for heavy competition at QB and the cap ramifications which would have removed options for the Jets going into camp. If Rex Ryan hangs himself by relying on Sanchez because he's there and not getting rewarded for that faith then it will have been a bad decision in my opinion.
