Well when reports of Hill and Gates looking much improved come out from the coaches, beat writers, and players themselves, it adds weight to the fact that they will be much improved players this year. Add in they both run sub 4.4 40's and Hill is 6' 4", and you have HIGH potential WR's. If you want to close your eyes and shut your ears to what's coming out at camp, that's fine but you come across as stubborn and ignorant. And sanchez never got praised during training camp.
I'd say give it at least 3 full seasons before you can really start to see the imprint a GM is making on a franchise. If you can't be that patient, at the very least you should wait until the first preseason game under his watch before you become disappointed in his work. Just my opinion.
Losing a starter is like shaking up a bottle of soda and popping the cap. As long as the cap is in place (Holmes) you never know what the hell's inside the bottle. But pop the top, and all kinds of goodness shoots out. Players like Gates, Kerley, Davis, Howard, and that UDFA d-lineman from last year who had been compressed to special teams, the bench, or the practice squad suddenly are on the field with the first team in practice and in games, and looking really really good, something that would NEVER have happened if every starter we had from 2-3 years ago was still playing. Don't look at losing a player like Holmes as doom and gloom...look at it as a huge opportunity for other stars to emerge. I'm Tom Brady, and I approve this message.
John Idzik and the Jets were in a very bad position at the moment that Idzik was hired to be GM. They had cap problems. They had free agency problems. They had a star player on the outs who wasn't going to come back inside unless the organization bent to his will (again.) They had overall talent problems based on an aging roster that had been built to compete in 2009 and 2010 and had been rolled over for one last try in 2011. They had a QB who had regressed severely over the last season and a half. They had one solid WR on the roster who was healthy and he was primarily a slot receiver. In that context the Jets made a bunch of fairly cheap gambles to try to shore up the talent base for 2013 within the constraints of limited cap space and a crying need at about half the starting positions on the roster. At this point we're about where you'd expect a team that made a half-dozen gambles to be. 2 of them have not worked out in David Garrard and very possibly Mike Goodson. 2 of them are kind of day-to-day in terms of whether they'll work out or not in Chris Ivory and Kellen Winslow, both of whom have significant injury histories. 2 of them seem to be working out well in Willie Colon and Antwan Barnes. This is about where you'd expect things to be right now. Some gambles succeed, some fail and some take a long time to know the score. If 3 of the 6 gambles work out this year then the Jets got 3 solid players for a 4th round pick and some of their limited cap space. The fact that many of the last regimes gambles are either failing or in the middle category of "we just don't know yet" is an aggravating factor but it has nothing to do with this year's gambles which seem to be on the normal course at the moment.
Precisely. Just like any sports, drafting necessary replacements in timely manner is paramount for the success of any franchise. For this fact alone, Tannenbaum failed so miserably. Now, lack of replacements can be of less significance, if the players Tannenbaum received in return do more than twice the amount of work on the field. As of now, that's not the case either. No wonder this team looks in shamble. When Idzik took over this season, he literally had nothing to work with - no extra pick, no cap space, no nothing - indeed, he assumed the command after the draft, changing almost the entire drafting crews. We will all see what he can do, once the bad contracts run their courses, and Idzik gets sufficient cap space along with good stock of draft picks.
I'm sure there are a least a few dumb asses right here on TGG that pray for a Laverneous Coles return so Kerley can go back to the practice squad!
My disappointment in our new GM is his comments to the press about having a big hand in choosing who the starting QB is. The GM should run the business off the field and let the coaches do what they were hired to too do. Not only does this add more fuel to the "lame duck" label that Rex has hanging over his head but also makes us look like we still don't know how to run a professional franchise.
I'm saying Idzik is building a solid foundation and that takes time. If that means 2013 isn't a playoff year and 2014 is when we really start to turn things around, so be it. That's the difference between playing checkers and chess. He's willing to look at the big picture instead of the snapshot of the 2013 season. Rex's job was secured only for one year by Woody but after that, w/o any talk of an extension, for all intents and purposes Rex is at the mercy of his w/l record and his new boss who is far different than his old boss. Look, we all knew it was gonna take more than one season to turn this organization around as it was rotting from the top down. Just because Idzik isn't making the splashy moves Tannenbaum did doesn't mean his jacking off in his office. Its the splashy moves that got us into this mess in the first place. What's that old saying about doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result? After 44 years, you can spare another year or two while this team gets it's shit together. Relax and enjoy the ride pardner.
So, Lets get this straight. Guy comes in..gets a top flight O.C. Grabs a couple of potential home run hitters at RB, Then... Sheds a ton of dead weight (including Mevi$) on defense.,,, Then has Geno Smith fall into his lap after grabbing two of the top four guys on the draft board, And you're disappointed? Byz, I know we dosagree on the Sanchize, but can we agree....the mentality is the same?
What your saying would make sense if Rex was not the coach but this is his and Sanchez 5th year together and it's a make or break year for both of them .Rex has a winning record and regardless of Idzik he has to see thi this as a win now type of team because he is running out of time ,even tho I'm not completely sold on the fact that Rex gets fired with a losing season he still has power within the team he has been there for 5 years so I'm not buying what you say about Idziks plans for the future
Hobbes I usually disagree with your posts but I never state it due to not wanting to get into an argument, but honestly this is a great post. Idzik so far, has been pretty good... He's been getting low risk high reward players and he stayed firm in contract negotiations and didn't bend just to sign a player like Tannenbaum did with Revis. The fact that the OP is complaining right now is ridiculous. For once in a couple of years, this board seems to have some serious optimism about this team.
He came into a tuff spot and frankly I think he has done fine. He has to juggle long term vision with short term fixes. Not fair to beat him up after ~6 months.
 Cimini is that you? Idzik is a football guy, he came from a football family. He worked both as a coach and in scouting. Why do people say he's just a capologist? Idzik is about competition. Let him do his thing. Stop spreading false info.
Some Jets fans have what I call Yankee syndrome They think we can just buy our team and hope for immediate success It does not work that way
As far as I know they've already worked Collie out and didn't sign him. What other WRs in particular do you think they should be signing immediately? So far it sounds like our unproven guys are performing quite well in TC so I don't get the panic, especially now that we have Braylon. As far as RB, it's definitely the most worrisome issue on O in my opinion. I haven't seen much from McKnight or Powell that gives me much confidence and with Goodson MIA and Ivory already dinged up things are looking very fuzzy. I'd love for them to bring in someone else to compete for the spot but the question then becomes...who is out there that would be a better option than what we already have? It's easy enough to complain about it, but who would you suggest that Idzik bring in?
