I agree with you. Pennington is clearly the best of the four when healthy, as he appears to be now. He's the most accomplished and if a potential injury is the only reason you can think of not to start him, he has to start. I'd also like to see Bollinger as the backup, as I think he gained valuable experience last year and he could step in and keep us in games, if nothing else. I like Clemens too, but he should be the #3 guy for this year.

I would have to agree, and I actually said this a few times after the Giant game. I'm pulling for Chad to do well, but this line is dangerous for a non-mobile QB like Chad. The line has tremendous talent and potential, but the ultimate success will be a process that could put Chad in harms way again.

Its a tough call at this point, but Mangini is cerebral, and I trust they'll make the right decision. This thought process justifies why Mangini has been non-commital up to this point about who will start.

I'm not sure exactly which boards he's reading and criticizing. First, has anyone here praised Ramsey? He has clearly been the worst QB of the four so far, and I think just about everyone around here feels that way, just as Costa does. Second, few people here have suggested that Clemens should start the season, although many believe that he could come in at some point during the season. That's also pretty similar to what Costa is saying. Third, his argument against Pennington is that he's going to get hurt. I don't see how this is an argument to not start him. I think there's a decent chance he'll get hurt, too - and if and when that happens, his (Jets) career will be over, and the Jets will move on. The question then seems to be who should come in if Pennington gets hurt, but that's not the point of the article.

I had higher hopes for Ramsey, but he's clearly a bust. I doubt that Bollinger could do more than keep a seat warm for a while. I'm not convinced that Pennington can be very effective with this group of offensive players, but I don't really see much of a downside to him trying to start the season. If he gets hurt in the first 8-10 games, put in Bollinger; if he is uninjured at that point, but ineffective, or gets hurt in the last 6-8 games, put in Clemens. Start next year with Clemens as the number 1 starter, unless he is awful in the last few games (don't want to think about that). If by some miracle Pennington stays healthy and is effective all year, then he goes into 2007 as the starter.

This guy reads at JI.... so enuff said about that. I happen to think, or hope, that the best situation we could have is that going into 2007, our QB depth chart reads
    Clemens
    Pennington
    Bollinger

Bolly is the perfect #2 or #3 QB... no controversy, but a guy who can come in and confuse a defense, using his mobility. He kept drives alove last year tucking and running, and he's done it in this preseason too. That dimension can really screw up a defense and get them out of their game plan.

I would take Bolly as the starter, although I would prefer Chad. It seems like no matter who is at QB, we're calling plays that don't require a pass over 15 yards, so arm strength won't be an issue. We may as well have a QB who can rollout and scramble and add the running dimension to this team to keep us competitive. We're not really going to have a passing game and we're not going to the Super Bowl, so why not Bolly.

I agree with everyone about Ramsey, I think even Ramsey's family would agree that he should be cut.

Seems like the majority of the people on the board think that Bollywood is better than Ramsey. I agree that'll be really interesting to see how the powers that be in Hempstead handle this brewing controversy...

Hard to argue with your logic but I have one caveat. Last year the beef was that Chad wasn't ready, he was rushed back and that's why he got reinjured. The argument this year is Chad has had time to heal he is better and therefore should start good or bad. What if Chad is rushing back? Does Chad look any better this pre-season than last pre-season? I don't think so if anything he looks worse. I don't believe in Chad every being a ready QB again but for those who do believe Chad can make it back those are the people who should really be concerned.

I'm definitely not in that majority, and that's not a compliment to Ramsey. I think the local HS QB is as good as Bollinger.

wow your local HS must be one hell of a team to have a QB as good as Bollinger on it, hell maybe the Jets should just sign and start him.

seriously though I liked the article, and it does bring up many good points. Personally I think that the people that say Pennington gives us the best shot to win right now are crazy. I think he's too predictable and too unreliable. Ramsey just bring much to the table either. To me its between Clemens and Bollinger, but the CS will wuss out and start Pennington.

And yet he's still better than Ramsey. Ramsey has played with people around him, not to mention he's been coached to be a starter since he's entered the league. And still, his numbers are only marginally better than what Brooks put up last year. Bollinger had been a third stringer since his rookie season. 3rd stringers receive no attention in camp. He got thrown into a starting role with no preparation and played right about on the level that Ramsey has his entire career. Neither QB is great, but I fail to see what Ramsey has done in his career to suggest he's better than Brooks.

Very interesting point! I guess last year I still thought that Chad could potentially turn back into the QB he once was (or a reasonable approximation thereof), so rushing him was doing both him and the team a disservice. Count me as right with you on "I don't believe in Chad ever being a ready QB again"; as you note, that means that for us it doesn't really matter if he gets an extra week or two. For those who think that he can go back to being an effective NFL QB, the question they should be asking themselves is whether he really is as much back as he can be, both healthwise and from a football preparedness point of view.

And remember that this isn't simply a question of who's the better QB - it's a question of who might make more things happen at the moment, with the team in its current state. Long-term, I'm hoping Chad recovers and leads the team for years to come. Starting him with this inexperienced line and with the lack of blocking from the running backs, might mean there is no long-term for Chad.

This has been a great discussion for the most part - apart from the inevitable 'Chad/Bolly/Ramsey sucks and that's all there is to it' posts there have been good arguments posted from all sides.

Last year you can make an argument that it was worth taking a shot with him not being ready. SB contenders, veteran team with only 1 new starter on the OL and Baker replacing Becht, a healthy Martin and Mawae and Coles back. This year we are clearly in a rebuilding mode with 2 rookies and 3 new starters on the OL along with a new starter in the backfield and at WR.

I actually thought Chad looked much better against the Vikings in last years preseason game then he has at any time during this preseason. I think this guy is an accident waiting to happen and it's totally unnecessary.

I think Mangini is using Chad to bring the rest of the O up to speed behind a veteran QB. As soon as the rest of the O is up to speed Chad will be out if he makes it that far.

Yeah, but aren't you the same guy who argued with me that know way we should try to pry Chris Simms from the Bucs last year as he was never going to amount to anything.

Anyway, the whole Brooks vs. Ramsey thing is kind of awash in my mind. One has more experience and a better arm, the other has more mobility; six of one, half dozen of the other. I don't see either bringing us to the promised land, but stranger things have happened....

It's also a pretty useless debate. I mean, if we're dipping down into the third string for a quarterback (again), then a winning season isn't really an issue for us. In fact, we're almost better picking a third-string guy by weighing who's friendlier with his teammates. Keep more people happy.

No Kidding, the writer admitted that. We're not going to win the Super Bowl this year no matter who is the QB.

Bolly should be the #2, IMO.

Why are you so down on Bolly? He did some good things under horrible conditions last season. I have confidence in him.

I couldn't agree more. Bollinger gives us our best chance of winning...Brady Quinn. Until Chad plays a whole real game with real hard hits...I'm not convinced. Clemens looks like an average decision maker with a strong arm. Ramsey is this team's biggest waste of cap space since Johnny Mitchell.
    Save Bollywood!!!
