    EXACTLY!!

Gee, you think maybe part of the reason Varitek is so valued as a game caller is that he has had good pitchers throwing the ball to him? What happened to him in 2005, when his cERA was over 5.00? Did he forget how to call a game? Leave the master notebook will all the super secret pitch scenario algorithms in Pedro's car by accident?

It was not a straw man. It was purposeful hyperbole to highlight my point. I would have thought that obvious.

Because you'll also please notice that I never claimed that you did say those things.

Sox fans certainly act like it's the case most of the time, though.

Well, aside from pitchers throwing to Kottaras having a much higher BABIP, isn't this just the same thing you were referencing before? Kottaras spends the bulk of his playing time catching one dude -- Wakefield.

Look, there's more than enough variation here to debunk this as anything more than pitchers liking him and the RSN media following Goebbels' advice about lying. (Actually, given the complexion of the team, maybe that's not the only advice they took from Goebbels' handbook.)

But seriously... look at 2005. What was Varitek's problem then? Did he forget how to call a game? Did he not care? Or did he have less talented pitchers throwing to him? If he was such a great game caller, what was his love affair with fastballs and Beckett in 2006? It took him an entire season to figure out that Meathead shouldn't try to throw it through a brick wall 95% of the time? I mean, he should have been able to convince Beckett that that was a bad idea, given how pitchers just melt when they gaze into his eyes, right?

In any case, I would like to thank Varitek for calling a hell of a game tonight. That pitch selection in the first inning really illustrated how much time he puts into studying the other hitters.
