Not for the long haul, but depending on what's available in the FA market next year, he would be fine there for atleast one year. If Sheffield comes back, he has to DH most games.

With all the talent in this lineup, we can afford a bottom of the order hitter who gives us good defense, a strong arm, and a .780-.800 OPS.

He's a rookie man... Mistakes happen, he is playing as a yankee which is the hardest thing to do then playing for any other team.

By the rate he is playing he will get alot better, and if matsui is out for the year he can bat for him too see if he keeps ascending... Then he might be scheff's replacement.

Oh I see... he's going to make up for the loss of Matsui and Shef. LOL!

When i said replacement i never meant an equal replacement... I meant as in not spending money on a FA.

But i guess you like acting like you really dont understand what is posted.

If Melky can keep doing what he's doing while improving his all-around game, I wouldn't pick up the option of Sheffy...He's handled NY wonderful, has earned the money in his contract and is still a very good hitter...If they do however pick up the option, I wouldn't totally be against it, but i'd rather go with the youth in Melky IF he keeps playing well...

I don't see how any of this conversation is related to Derek Jeter, but I'll throw in my two cents.

Cabrera has been on fire at the plate. He is a very patient and smart hitter and has excelled at fouling off tough pitches to get a good one to hit off of good pitchers this season. He was wildly successful at AAA and I see no reason to believe that he won't be a solid MLB player.

He's a pretty poor fielder but he's got a great arm and at left field he can mask his problems there. He may not be as good as Milledge, but who the hell cares? He's more than good enough to fill in for Matsui, and that's all that matters for the Yankees.

    Bruised thumb.

We're lucky, we dodged a serious bullet. We can weather injuries to the outfield but if Jeter went down we'd be totally screwed. Cairo is a great backup but he's no Derek Jeter.

Hahaha... What your trying to say numbnuts? When scheff's contract is up this year we will have no RF? Melky steps in... Replacement right? And he did take scheffs outfield duties when he was hurt...

I think that cali son is burning a hole in your head... Causing traumatic lapses...

Well like it or not... Melky is learning from jeter... Learning how to be a professional athlete just by imitating how he carries himself.

    Jeter is the man..

What the hell are you talking about dude? #1 I'm saying Melky is not even close to Shef.... he's about as good as Endy Chavez. #2 I live in NY.

The difference being Chavez is 28 with a career .660 OPS, while Melky is 21 and already a better player.

Chavez is a superior fielder and baserunner and gives up about .100 points in OPS (based on Melkeys whopping 100 AB's in the AL) Not sure what qualifies him as "already better" in your eyes but they look pretty close to me.
