Few WRs win matchups to give big windows in the NFL precisely because everyone is freakishly fast and athletic. That's the point that you seem to ignore or keep missing.
Mims has ALWAYS struggled with separation. In fact, in 2020, Mims had an average separation of 1.23 yards which ranked him #94 in the league.
deep threats typically do it somewhat consistently during games deep. robby seemed to be open several times a game deep for us every game. mims doesn't. bets you can hope for out of his deep threat ability is he gets single coverage and you throw a 50/50 ball and hope he makes the play
separation is overrated. it wasn't even a thing traditionally. if you caught the ball when they threw it to you you were a great WR. They didnt analyze if you got separation. In some ways its the coordinator's job anyway to design a play to get them separated Mike Evans DeAndre Hopkins Allen Robinson those guys dont get separation. They are pretty damn good though. Imagine if someone didn't play them because they didn't get separation
All this talk of us desperately needing Mims to be a deep threat is ignoring the fact that Moore is faster than Mims and is just generally a better WR to boot.
I don't doubt that is true, but with his height, leaping ability and catch radius, that negates that to a large extent.
Tyreek Hill messed with everyone's head regarding this notion of separation. Yes he's amazing at getting separation and that's why he's so good. But that's one way to play WR, there are other ways. Not everyone has the physical gifts he's given. Very few in fact. If you are using his style as your standard to achieve you are going to end up disappointed -- Keyshawn woulda been a 2nd round pick in today's game. Not any good at getting separation Was Laveranues Coles good at getting separation??? Hell no, he had guys draped all over him every time he caught a pass. But he was an pro-bowl WR and very good in the deep passing game
This is the part I truly don't understand. We're talking about Mims here, not some world beater WR who had an amazing rookie year. He has to earn his spot on this roster and frankly when you have guys like Corey Davis, Elijah Moore, Jamison Crowder, and Braxton Berrios on the field, you have to be able to prove you are better than them. While he is more talented than Berrios, Berrios is also critical on Special Teams. The same can be said for Cole, who also plays special teams. Cole was a kick returner in college and played special teams with the Jaguars. Saleh may be exaggerating when it comes to Mims and him not playing largely because of special teams, but I don't think coming out and saying Mims is an idiot and doesn't know the play book is a logical play either.
No offense to the arguments for Mims, but if this is true, which it clearly is, how could you argue to play Mims over your starting gunner if Mims can not play on special teams? This comes at a time that our special teams game is extremely good. In fact, I was listening to a podcast prior to Sunday with a Patriots fan who was calling our special teams "elite" this year.
There is no argument. If your wr4-5 you need to play specials and they are going to take the best at specials. What’s interesting now is who goes inactive when crowder is back? Cole and mims? Carry 6?
robinson is one of the best route runners and gets tons of separation. hopkins the same but also wins jump balls and double coverage a lot. Evans doesn't get much seperation but thats also why brady hasn't used him much and has thrown much more to brown and godwin and even gronk. evans is one of the best jump ball guys though so brady threw him some bones in the red zone this week after he got nothing the 1st week.
I wouldn't say elite as we still don't know enough about amendola as a K and our punter is hurt and replaced for the next 6 weeks with a 35 year old morestead who to be fair is still pretty good.. we do have the best LS in the NFL though and really good coverage. special teams as a whole in the NFL is pretty phased out outside of punts and FGs. returns don't happen much or create the excitement they used to and berrios is solid but nobody is spectacular in the NFL at it. Meanwhile teams like pitt have dominated on special teams with blocking punts for TDs and we never seem to do that
When you are a fringe player, the best way to improve your chances has always been making special teams. No one is too good for it.
Most of your depth guys at WR/CB are going to be gunner's and guys who make up the ST. It's why JD spent money and resources to bring in Hardee, who was one of the best gunners in the league the last few seasons. Being that Jeff is not being good at a gunner, him and Hardee can get down the field in a pinch and flip field position for example. It's why Berrios made the roster as the main KR/PR. Cole actually has experience as a KR as well. Being that those guys are good and offer WR value with what they play, it's why they were active, and Mims wasn't. I don't think the staff is saying Mims isn't good right now, but just moreso the others have more versatility all the while Mims is learning the intricacies of the WR spots.
This kid needs to play or Douglas needs to answer this. Douglas -Let Robby walk -2020 draft class has been terrible so far. Second round pick can’t even see the field. -Not saying this is the wrong move but it’s clear Darnold is an NFL qb. We had the chance to build a team around him and went with Wilson. not sure what we need to do but eventually you need talent to compete. Keelan Cole is a nick journeyman and our 2nd round pick can’t beat him out? I hate this team
I get where you're coming from as the GM gets the players...But I think in this case, JD is showing pretty exceptional leadership in allowing his handpicked new coach/CS to make the depth chart and play whomever the CS deems they should be playing. And he's doing that despite using a #2 pick on Mims, albeit making that selection for the previous coach, so you know he'd love to see his last year #2 pick play 100% of the reps...but he's letting his new CS dictate who plays which is the way to run the org. Having a GM dictate who plays over the CS decisions is probably not the way we want this thing to be run...if AG was still here, I'm sure Mimms would be starting as that was the type of player he wanted, this CS apparently views him in a different way. We can discuss whether the CS view on Mims is correct or not, totally fair game, but allowing the CS to play the players they want to play is the correct thing for JD to do IMO.
