Whisenhunt should never get an interview with the Jets. Kurt Warner having a healthy thumb had more to do with that SB run then Whisenhunt. He bombed out of both AZ and TN, failed with young QB's and has had all of his success with Warner and Rivers who were going into the HOF if they never met Whisenhunt.
Minny's problem isn't their offense. It isn't any better than last year, but it isn't any worse either. And if they kept Keenum, it would be worse because Keenum's performance last year was a fluke. Their problem is they went from the number 1 defense in football to an above average but nothing special defense. Maybe their defense would be better if they didn't have to pay Cousins all that money, but I think part of it is just regression to the mean.
DeFilipo is probably on the Jets short list of HC candidates. It would be good for the organization to interview him and see what he has to say. That being said, if we do hire an OC as our HC, I would prefer it to be Pete Carmichael OC of the New Orleans Saints. If he is on the market I would want him. He has had sustained success over the past decade with a QB that many analysts had written off. I think DeFilipo is more a flash in the pan. I don't know if Carmichael is going to be on the market, however.
I agree that a lot of the retreads are no good, and that's why they are available. I also didn't say that all young OCs are a pipe dream, but many of them are, and in the Jets' case, it's time to try something different. With the exception of Richie Kotite and Bill Parcells, every single HC we've had in our history after Weeb Ewbank was a "hot coordinator" and novice HC. Continuing to go that same route and expecting a different result meets one of the definitions of insanity. At this point, with such a young, undisciplined team, I'd much rather have a retread who was a disciplinarian, who knew how to be a HC, had some idea of how to handle QBs, how to manage the clock and time outs, and make adjustments even if he's just "meh" than take a chance on a young novice, coordinator who will have to learn on the job. I'm beyond sick of that. I wouldn't want Zimmer or some of the other retreads, but I have to think that there are some retreads out there working as coordinators somewhere who would want another shot at being a HC and who could fulfill my requirements above.
I don't think DeFilippo should get an interview for anything other than QB Coach. There's no way in hell I'd want' him as HC, and feel almost that strongly about his being OC. Carmichael, LaFleur or Toub have to be better.
No Bill Belichek team has ever won the Super Bowl without either Lawrence Taylor or Tom Brady on the roster. Think about it. Without the consensus best player in the league at his disposal, he’s a JAG.
So far I haven't seen a lot of mention on previous HCs except for the obvious three, Whisenhunt's name popped up o a couple of times, as Bruce Arian. Be interesting to see a more complete list from the Coach literati on this site. I would be in heaven with John Harbaugh but there is no way that will happen unless Baltimore goes completely brain dead. I have a bad feeling about the selection process, who will call the shots and how involved Mac will be.
While I was revisiting the list of current HC, I earmarked what IMHO were a few recently promoted coordinators that have taken the next step and done a pretty decent job as newbie HC. Mike Vrabel Kyle Shanahan Sean McVay Anthony Lynn Adam Gase Matt Nagy Seems a bit of a new wave coming into the NFL. Can wait to see which way this august ownership will go. An established and respected HC or an up and coming OC or a College coach. This team needs major help in discipline, organization and personnel accountability.
It will be fascinating to see which way they go. There's definitely a trend towards promoting co-ordinators and some have had some success of late as you've listed. But actually when you look at the Jets, since Parcells they've hired 4 first time head coaches in Edwards, Mangini, Ryan and Bowles so this is something you could argue we've tried already. Wonder if the Johnson's will decide they want someone with head coaching experience this time? Most important thing to me is that whoever the coach is, it's got to be an offensive mind not another defensive old school football coach. What's even more important is that Maccagnan is fired, but that's another thread
