I was wondering the same thing. Another poster referenced personality issues between he and Shanahan, but haven't seen any sources. This would be interesting to know, though seems like he has good defenses wherever he goes anyway
I'm happy about this. I don't want the head coach calling plays or soley focusing on one side of the ball. The coach needs to be a leader that demands accountability from everyone and has the pulse of the TEAM, not be a glorified play caller . I feel like the Jets haven't had a head coach like that in a long time.
Me too. Though Saleh was also the same as the "CEO" coach. But to me he seemed disengaged and would like to see a little "coaching" from the HC. So I like the theory, but hope for improvements in the execution from Saleh
Shanahan didn't like him. Wilks' D held the Chiefs down in the SB. It wasn't a performance issue. Wilks is demanding, after his D was gashed by Detroit, in the 1st half primarily of the NFC Championship, he called out the players calling their performance unacceptable and embarrassing. -- That's something Bob Saleh would never do, especially after a win, so that's why Mr. "Positive Vibes Only" is back in San Fran as Shanahan's coordinator, thats the buddy buddy personality Shanahan wants.
Agree, hopefully AG has learned watching these one-sided HC of the Jets continue to fail paying too much attention to their side of the ball...
This seems right to me. Even Ulbrich recently said he made a mistake staying as D Coordinator after he became HC. I would like this team at least to be competitive first year. I'm getting pretty old. Jets need to hurry up.
No harm no foul with Wilks He got the 49ers into the Superball which is amazing ...but had a bad call that day (meh)
Not as bad a call as the one from the HC in overtime. Not selecting to go last was a major blunder. Plus that defense in 2023 was a top 5 all year if I recall.
Unfortunately, I don't have much more on insight. The whole area was so pissed that Shanahan had to burn that timeout in the SB, that if anything tangible was floated it was lost in the anger for the timeout. All I know is the 49'ers defense was pretty damn good that year. ALTHOUGH, in a number of games they couldn't stop a nosebleed let alone the run. I think these teams are all loading up on undersized LB'ers so they can run with the TE's and backs out of the backfield. Other than that is D's were good to go! Hard to say what his "real" beef with Shanahan was.
We might never know what caused the beef, but it’s undeniable that he has consistently fielded very good Ds. So using the fact he was fired after the SB as an excuse not to hire him, well hell, then Shanahan should had been fired along with him. He completely blew the call with the overtime coin flip selection by not going last, putting all the pressure on a D that was outstanding all game, while the O stumbled.
Steve Wilks was a great hire. He’s the perfect guy to be the interim coach when shit hits the fan again.
