I think it's too early to compare entire careers, but I do think Revis right now is more skilled at the CB position than Sanders in his prime. Revis has just as good coverage plus the ability to help the run game and make hard tackles. Revis is much more physical although Sanders is faster. Revis did bait that interception on Romo in the Cowboys game last year. Sanders was really good at doing this as well. Too early to say for sure whether Revis is the best of all time. He's close.
Rice vs. deion teams: we don't know exactly how many plays they were matched up for but it's safe to assume they were matched up pretty regularly when in the same division and playing 2x a year 1989-1993 1989 vs. Atl: 3-81, 2 TDs 3-32 1990 vs. Atl: 8-171, 1 TD 13-225, 5 TDs 1991 vs. Atl: 7-138-1 6-44 1992 vs. Atl: 7-183-2 4-45-1 1993 vs. Atl: 3-33 6-105 totals: 60 recs, 1057 yds, 12 TDs avg: 6 recs, 106 yds, 1.2 TDs prorate this to a 16 game season: 96 recs, 1691 yds, 19 TDs
team. I said I don't know the exact #s from the times they were matched up but if he was shutting him down wouldn't they have him on him at all times? revis legitimately shut down the likes of Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, reggie Wayne, etc...
Deion didn't follow the #1 around like Revis does. To say Deion used to shut down Rice is inaccurate.
I think if I was starting an all-time team I would want Mike Haynes and Revis as the starters with Deion Sanders and Jimmy Johnson as backups.
Well I'm glad you're not starting an All-star team. You're basing Revis on mostly potential. Deion is a hall of famer and if Revis decides to play at an elite level for more than 3 years, he will be there also, but pump your breaks and show some respect to the original "shutdown" corner
Might want to figure out where "Night Train" Lane figures into that lineup http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d8012c90d/Dick-Night-Train-Lane-Feature
Just browsed through it again, no mention of Night Train that I can see. So, what is it that you thought I might have missed ?
Deion Was a great cover corner and play maker but he was really really shitty against the run. I hate how no one ever mentions that. He would run himself out of the play if they ran to his side. Rod Woodson and Darrell Green were much better against the run than him but Deion was a better play maker than them. Revis is much better against the run than Sanders ever was.
Okay, it had to be in another similarly themed thread of the past week to 10 days. Go look at old threads. Nobody on this site studies NFL history more than me. You may not agree with my opinion on some players, but I don't pull stuff out of my ass in discussions like these. Lane is on my top 5 CBs list.
There have been several of these Revis vs Sanders threads on this board. In other ones I stated that I feel Haynes, Sanders and Lane in some order are the top 3 CBs of all-time with Revis having a shot to get in there if he puts together more all-pro seasons. Would it have been wrong to put Lawrence Taylor on an all-time team after 1985? Ray Lewis after 2000? By your logic, we cannot consider Gale Sayers for the punt returner spot because he only played 5 full seasons just like Revis. Of course, Devin Hester may have taken the #1 spot from Sayers. Then again, he is still active and thus cannot be considered by your logic.
It's all good man. I wasn't trying to knock your knowledge or imply that you were pulling things out your ass. If I had thought that the guys you had mentioned were whack, I would have flat out said so. All my post basically said is that IMO, I'd put Night Train up in the top 2. It's like if someone said "Emmit and Barry were the best 2 RBs ever". They aren't bad choices, and I could see where someone would make that argument, but I'd throw Payton, Brown and/or Dickerson into the mix. With that said, I'll see if I can find your other post as it sounds like a good read
I like the shutdown capabilities of Haynes and Revis. I'd rather have Sanders as a nickleback and use him as the punt returner. In today's NFL Lane might be a safety based on his violent style of play. Offensive attacks were much more rudimentary in his era. Would he have been as good in this era against less predictable offenses? Tough to say. Jim Brown is probably the best RB of all time, but I'd rather have Walter Payton on the team. Payton was the better all-around back and therefore had a little extra value.
