It's a lot easier for a QB to put up big passing numbers when defenses have to devote a large amount of effort to stopping him as a runner.

Not at all. I don't believe in Darnold at all any more.

Not at all but we don’t have a choice. Drafting another 50/50 q won’t help

Good point. I'm not comparing Fields to Mahomes, but Mahomes was discredited by many, if not most, because of the long line of rag-armed, failed Air Raid QBs that came out of Texas Tech and colleges in general. If Fields is ruled out, it should be because he doesn't have the qualities, traits, characteristics and talent that Douglas believes is necessary, not because he played at Ohio St.

I understand that, I'm not an expert either, but, I'm smart. As I know you are too.

I still am a fan of your prototypical QB too, but like you have said, the league Is evolving. I think that passing has become so much easier due to all the rule changes, restrictions, that It's not as important to be an amazing passer as It once was. You still have to be a fairly capable passer, It's just not as important as years past. If you can have the best of both worlds though, you have an all-star.

I would highly disagree with your assessment right out the gate with calling Fields more of a runner than a passer. Fields Is extremely accurate, has he made some bone headed decisions? Yep, does that mean he consistently does that though? Nope. It's actually very rare to see those type of decisions from him.

He has a very good ball, with a good amount of arm strength. He is accurate. He is good at throwing on the run, he is extremely good at the deep ball.

You typically don't see a lot of adjustments at the line from QB's In college. You have basic pre-snap reads and adjustments, but, It's nothing like you see at the pro level. So that Is more of nit-pick because those type of traits and skills are mainly seen In the NFL, where It is much more detailed and common.

He's stock Is very high right now, even with the bad game against North Western. So I don't think It would be smart for him to go back to college at all. If he falls apart In the playoffs though, that will likely make people really start questioning some things, but, I think It will be fine. Especially once OSU get their players back.

I agree that the playoffs Is a big spot for, Fields. I have nothing but confidence In this kid right now though. I have watched him play so good, he shows that he should be considered a very high selection at QB.

He made a few bad mistakes. In a couple games. He has played amazing otherwise. I will take the overall body of work, over a small sample size of bad decisions.

Your stance kind of surprises me a little too. I know you were very vocal at the fact that we passed on, Patrick Mahommes. The irony Is, they both have very similar tape In college. They both had a lot of the same "criticisms" coming out of college. A lot of the same things were being said on this board about, Mahommes.

Now, I'm not saying that Fields will be as good as, Mahommes. I hope he ends up that way but I'm not bold enough to proclaim such a thing. I just know, they have very similar skill sets coming out of college.

I would hate for us to miss out on another potential QB of that caliber.

I would rather be wrong in risking the kid being a flop, than regretful of passing on the kid and he turns out to be the next coming of Patrick Mahommes.

Darnold and Fields probably have about the same chance to be good NFL QB's at this point.

I don't think you spend a #2 overall pick on somebody who is not substantially more likely to be good than the guy you spent 3 extra 2nds on 3 years ago.

I think the Jets are better off picking up the 5th year option on Darnold if the other choice is taking Fields #2 overall.

If the Jets can get a multi-pick windfall for the #2 - well that is as close to a no-brainer as you get these days.

Stop already with Fields. Sam is 23 years old and has absolutely no help. We have guy who is going to play ball with his son as the starting RB. Jets need so so much help. Where do I start? WR, Edge rusher, C, CBs,RB,FS. Sell the second pick in the draft for a ton of picks. I can see at least 3 teams needing QB. Hopefully Sam can have two more solid games going into next year. Actually I am not bumped out by losing on the Trevor pick. The Jets nee so many players by trading the pick we can accelerate the Jets getting better faster.

Don't waste 25 mil/yr on Darnold he has shown nothing in 3 years

    That's where I stand.

If Fields and Darnold are equal, give me Fields. You reset QB contract and there is just no way I'm giving Darnold an extension.

That's the biggest issue with Sam. There is no way I'm ponying up 25 million for what he has shown thus far. It's a terrible decision

Understood, and agreed (with the 1st part), but to play devil's advocate, could they possibly extend Darnold "on the cheap" based on past 2 seasons (no other team is giving him that top dollar contract either).... I have no idea if this violates contractual clauses / intial draft contracts, but seems like a thought.....

FTR... I was 10000% all for drafting Trevor Lawrence :(

but fact remains, most of this roster is a turd, and it'll take more than 1 QB to fix that (but you make the exception for the generational talent that TL is)

The Jets don't have to waste the money on more than 1 season at this point. The 5th year option is the only real flyer they have to take and it's probably worth taking if the Jets do not select a 1st round QB in the 2021 draft.

The amount of the tender is likely to be $21.206M according to this source: https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-fifth-...icting-outcomes-all-32-first-round-picks-2018

If Darnold plays well enough in 2021 to justify a new contract the Jets will have all of the 2022 off-season and season to get a deal done. If not, well the price of seeing Darnold in year 4 was likely worth the guarantee in 2022. Again the Jets will have all of 2022 to evaluate again if Darnold is still on the field for them. If he's not on the field? Well that's just a normal failed free agency contract -something the Jets are very familiar with since they ring those up like clockwork every few seasons anyway, sometimes in multiples.

One positive on Fields...he supposedly worked very hard in the off-season to improve his QB skills. This is not another Ryan Leaf or Jamarcus Russell who is light-years better than the competition at all levels before coming to the NFL and doesn't have to or want to work on his craft.

Players on the team like his approach too...his peers respect him, that is saying a lot. Its like he can command an offensive group.

People like Sam, not sure about his command presence

Even if a new HC and OC says they can make him Top 10 QB easily ?
