I don't think Fowler was worth the #3 overall pick, or worth a 3rd and a 5th Round pick today, but I wouldn't mind potentially signing him on the open market in 2019.
Remember, the Rams won't be bringing in many FAs next off season so they will get the 3rd round pick back as a 2020 compensatory pick same as the Eagles if/when Tate walks
Not to mention the Rams strategy is to go all in for this season. It was widely reported when pursuing Mack that they did so with the intent to simply trade him after the season. Clearly their mindset in acquiring players for this year is about winning this year and not locking them up long term.
I'm well aware of what you said. I still would love to know what sources you have that have told you the Rams won't lock him up before he hits the open market.
You're either completely missing the point or ignorant to the Cooks contract situation. There's a clear comparison to be drawn from LAR's willingness to just this season before the season started, having traded for Cooks, then prior to him ever taking a snap, they sign him to a long term contract, and them doing likewise to another player before they're out of the building.
No you are missing the difference between trading for a player in the offseason and trading for a player mid season. And you are ignoring what has been a widely reported strategy about simply acquiring players for this year. My speculation is far more aligned with their reported strategy for this year than yours is.
Clearly we are speculating; don’t be an Internet jackass arguing from the position that any conversation being had requires hard core evidence as if we are prosecuting someone for murder. And my speculation is more in line with how the Rams are looking to bring in players to win this year.
You're basing this highly speculative and alleged claim off of what beat reporters were saying in regards to a potential Khalil Mack trade. That's an entirely different set of circumstances, that I'm sure would've had loads of offset language and compensatory picks. Not to mention Mack is THE highest paid defensive player. Which Fowler isn't going to even sniff in his deal, which makes it not only plausible they extend him but highly likely. Not that I care, I would much rather trade for Chandler Jones if that presents itself, or DeMarcus Lawrence if he becomes a FA. EDIT: I hate to even be so vehement about all this because I didn't want Fowler, or to pay the asking price he brought. But to offhandedly claim it's a sure thing that he's just a 1 year rental is foolish.
I don't. I said " can sign " as in he will be a FA. Ultimately the Jets FO felt this price was too steep.......Mac's gonna have to solve this in the off season if he wants to keep his job...
Obviously it’s all just speculation; why is that an issue for you? History will prove one of us correct. If Fowler has a great season with the Rams why would he skip free agency and not see how high he can drive his payday? Full disclosure — I’m asking for your opinion so don’t feel I am asking for verifiable facts. It would seem silly for him to not enjoy the spoils of free agency.
