The QB market is already a mess but they end up giving this guy the rumored figure then it really would make the market a mess. I mean for him to get that # the other guys agents must be salivating. Let's see what the end # gonna be or if they tag him.
"You can't always get what you want, well no You can't always get what you want. I tell you, baby You can't always get what you want, no But if you try sometimes you just might find, uh, mm You get what you need, oh yeah, woo!" - Sir Michael Philip Jagger, 1968
Jordan Schultz on Twitter: "Breaking: Daniel Jones and the #Giants are finalizing a four-year contract extension, sources tell @theScore. Jones guided the G-Men to their first playoff win in 11 years while compiling 22 total TDs and only 5 INTs. https://t.co/tnOGR36gqy" / Twitter
Giants also place the tag on Barkley. Albert Breer on Twitter: "Source: The Giants have placed the franchise tag on RB Saquon Barkley. His franchise tender is worth $10.09 million." / Twitter
Amazing job by the Giants. There is no middle class for QBs anymore. I think Carr at 37.5 is better, but signing Jones allows them to still have 30+ in cap space to improve the rest of the offense. If they had to tag Jones, barkley prob walks, and I'm not sure how much help they could have given the offense.
Ian Rapoport on Twitter: "It's going to be a 4-year deal worth $160M, sources say, with $35M more in upside. They are finalizing." / Twitter
The Giants haven't won anything yet and they're already paying the QB. Very good chance this backfires on them.
I can't stand the Giants and I hate everything about them but it was a good move. They had to get a deal done. They would have used almost 70% of their available cap on tagging Jones this year and wouldn't have been able to upgrade the rest of the roster anywhere else -- specifically on the offensive side of the ball. Barkley would have also walked if they used the tag on Jones. They didn't have a choice and that's what they get for the prior regime not picking up Jones 5th year option. 82m of it is upfront in the first two seasons so if things go wrong, they can probably cut bait after year 3. Signing Jones saved them nearly $14million in cap and can allow them to go test the FA market at WR (Jakobi Meyers says hello) + draft someone like Addison or zay flowers at 25 and get things rolling. I think the number is high for what Jones is, but they had to get it done. No other choice.
There's always another choice when you are looking at a low mid-range QB who you know already because he's worked his way up to that level in 4 excruciating seasons for you. The guy had 15 TD passes last year and that's his average for 4 seasons. I mean I guess if you think that the grocery stores are all closed forever for some reason it makes sense to pay top dollar for a wilted head of lettuce. That's what the Giants just did.
He accounted for 22 last year, I get it. Very low production, but at the same time, take a look at his first 3 years in the league what was he working with? Devantae Booker and Wayne Gallman replacing Saquon Barkley when he was hurt? Throwing to sterling Shepard, a washed up Golden Tate, Darius Slayton? Those guys are JAGs. Dimes isn't great, but he also took his greatest leap year to year under Daboll all while having nothing on the offensive side of the ball. Richie James, practice squad Isaiah Hodgins, David Sills, and Slayton? That has to be the worst group of skill players in the league.. The $40m for 23 and 24 is worth it considering they will obviously add more talent on that ball and maybe he makes another jump. Who were they going to get? Andy Dalton? Baker Mayfield? Darnold? No thanks.
