Carpenter is 100% better than Folk. They are about the same on FGs but Carpenter is a little bit better there and has a lot stronger of a leg on kickoffs and can hit the long FGs. Kickers aren't worth much attention I agree but if I had to pick 1 to put on a new team I'd take Carpenter every time. The Phins are just getting rid of him because he will cost them more money than the kicker they just drafted.
yup...Folk in 2010 against the Colts to send us to the divisional round. Folk hasn't been AMAZING, but its fair to say he's been consistent in his ways, which is nice. but he's hit the kicks that needs to hit most, and lord knows we've had trouble finding kickers like that (Hall, Brien etc). I personally would like to keep him. Plus he was BOOMING kickoffs last week. Looks like his leg has gotten a bit stronger (in a dome but regardless) with that said I have no problem bringing in competition, but we've already brought in cundiff, i wouldn't add a 3rd leg to the mix...want to get a look at 2 guys....if the jets love carpenter then cut cundiff.
Folk's been great, actually. Compare him to kickers-past, and i'd say we have a damn good one right now. He's been as good, if not better, than advertised and has found himself as a kicker in this league here. We were all upset when we let the previous kicker go via free agency, and his name escapes me now as I type - that's how good Folk's been. I don't understand this thread. It's always good to give him some competition, and the Jets have done that each summer. I see no reason to sign Carpenter.
agreed....i'd be with cutting cundiff and bringing on carpenter but as far as im concerned Folk is a top the depth chart and his job is not in jeapordy.
His salary was close to 3 million and they drafted a kicker in the 5th round. If he comes cheap I say sign him.
Carpenter cost nearly 3 Mill/year, cost us a couple games last year and our rookie kicker is blasting the ball (incl a 57 yarder right down the middle). Carpenter was on a slide down with us. Similar like Olindo Mare. Early on a sure bet, then gets the big contract and it is all miss from then on. He is perfect on xtra points and under 40 (though some of those barely made it between the uprights). Above 40 then the slide begins. The biggest downfall though is that he begins to cost you games.
He missed several kicks that cost the fins at least 2 games last year. He very seldom kicks the ball deep on kick offs almost always allowing returns. He also had a $3M year price tag. The fins picked a kicker in the 5th round that beat him out in camp...
I didn't see the point of bringing Cundiff, he's not a good kicker at all, he's awful from 50+ (5/21) and average at best from closer range. Folks biggest issue is distance, he's not kicking a 57 yard FG at the end of a game or half but aside from that he's been good. His value to a team drops to average status from around 44-45 and beyond. Carpenter has the better leg from distance but his success rate is only marginally better between 40-50 than Folk. Carpenter would be better competition to push Folk but aside from the ability to attempt 57+ yd field goals at the proper time in a game (which doesn't happen often) I'm not seeing how he's an upgrade over Folk at this time. In general kickers aren't worth much "except" for teams that struggle scoring TD's and have trouble getting to the red zone. Carpenter was the perfect kicker for Miami because of his ability to kick the long FG. The question the Jets staff needs to address is do they think drives will stall needing a 37-43 yd FG or will it be more like 40-47 yds. If they're buying the kool aid that this team is decent offensively they may not bring in Carpenter to push Folk. If they're realistic and realize that added edge that Carpenter brings could net them 5-6 extra FG's over Folk they'll bring him in and dump Cundiff. It will be interesting to see their honest assessment.
He got cut by the Cardinals. After Folk missed that kick, I hope the Jets at least consider signing him. Anybody know how big the contract was?
Jets cut Billy Cundiff, sign Dan Carpenter Posted by Michael David Smith on August 27, 2013, 11:56 AM EDT Getty ImagesIn a swap of veteran kickers, Billy Cundiff is out of work and the well-traveled Dan Carpenter is on the move again. The Jets have announced that they released kicker Billy Cundiff and signed kicker Dan Carpenter today. Carpenter will now have a few days to compete with Nick Folk before the Jets choose one for their 53-man roster. Cundiff has been with the Jets for four weeks and made all of his field goals and all of his extra points in the preseason, but that wasn’t enough to keep his spot on the roster. Carpenter has had a busy preseason: He was cut by the Dolphins, signed briefly with Arizona and then cut by the Cardinals
So now Cundiff has been signed and cut by the Cowboys, Buccaneers, Packers, Saints, Falcons, Chiefs, Lions, Browns, Ravens, Redskins, 49ers, and Jets.
Carpenter is solid, but did miss 2 game winning kicks last year in consecutive weeks against the Jets and Cards
