I agree with many that this is indeed depressing. Curtis Martin is a great Jet, one of the best ever... but something is not right as it pertains to the numerous quotes from Jet players who say they have not seen Martin at meetings in any capacity this summer while Martin remains on the PUP list. I hope he can make it back. If Martin does retire (and I hope he does not have to do so yet), the Jets should retire his #28 jersey.
There's nothing positive about Curt playing this year. He might not be the best back we have, and nobody wants to see him unable to walk the rest of his life. Damn, this is sad. Now HE deserves to have his number retired. Wayne doesn't, but Curt should.

Anyone here that wants to, please do some research on Earl Campbell and see the condition he lives with everyday. The man can barely get out of bed unassisted. He's in pain everyday due to the numerous hits during his years on the field. This happens alot to former players and its heartbreaking. I'm not convinced that Martin is going to be this debilitated. Sure, his knee might be pretty beat up now and he may not be able to walk without some amount of discomfort, but I don't think he'll be close to what Campbell lives with. The reason I think this is the fact they have long talked about Martin's running style as not being the type that takes a pounding on his body. He was more of a slasher and didn't really try to out-muscle everyone. He's got some high mileage, no doubt, but until last year and year before he's always been relatively healthy too.
Everyone wants to blame Herm. Sure, he certainly avoided his responsibility to keep his players from going too far, but you know Martin has to save his other foot for kicking his own ass. Guy has tons of heart, but sometimes you have to know when to listen to the docs and give your body a rest.
I don't think he's going to end up like that if he retire now either. But if he plays this year, I don't care how you run, he's had a TON of carries. If he reinjures himself, it's not unfeasible for him to limp around the rest of his life.
Yeah I agree. I never want to see another 28 in Green and White. I don't really want to see another #80 either.

You have a point but athletes don't want out. MLB pithcers are the same way. "I'm okay coach, let me stay in, I can get this guy". It's the coaches decision ultimately to pull the player. Now sure you can't squarely put it all on Herm so I will include that Hack of an OC we had. He ran Curtis a lot. He never cared to improve the passing game. He rode Curtis all the way even when it was 3rd and forever. Might as well have called him Bum Hackett. :hackett:
Yes, unfortunately we found Iron-Man's limit it seems. We love to see guys giving it all, but at the same time no one wants to see their quality of life suffer as some of them do end up having. Hopefully, he can look back and find some satisfaction at his achievements and call it a career if necessary.
Freaking Hackett!! The worst part of seeing him hurt and not being able to play is knowing that he did so much to stay in last year when for most of the season we knew it was a lost cause. You don't lose 2 QB's and have 3rd and 4th QB's lead you to the playoffs. They could have pulled him much sooner.
even though herm shouldnt have ran him to injury, I would bet that Curtis martin was starving for that ball every time.. We can only hope he comes back, and goes out with a bang.
