What's annoying about the Landry signing is that he's not the guy the Jets needed last year. If he stays healthy he'll help in run support, which if he can work edge to edge will be invaluable, but he's not going to cover Gronk or Welker or any of the myriad receivers that sit between them. He's not a cover guy.

So the Jets have the same problem they had last season only now they've signed a safety. So either they spend more value in what is already an overspent defensive backfield or we wind up with the same problem again.

I guess it's just my off-season to be aggravated by every move the Jets make.

And that sir is unfair to girls. Marylou Whackenheimer used to scare the crap out of me in street football as a kid.

I know what you mean, a guy who's more of a cover safety would have probably been a more important hole to fill, but getting someone who can jump in and take E. Smith's starting spot is still a very positive move. Hopefully they can take care of the speed/coverage aspect either with a trade or in the draft.

Wow you guys keep proving yourself to be completely oblivious. Cromartie tackled great last year, huge improvement

But I don't like the move because 1)Physical position/Injuries (though he could take Kerry Rhodes sit back and do nothing role) and 2) He is too damn good a corner not to player corner.

I would say he tackled better, not great, but most of his tackles were desperate shoves out of bounds.

I dont think Antonio Cromartie and great tackler should ever be in the same sentence together. Maybe he improved slightly but there is no way he will ever be a great tackler. Most people on this board would say that YOU'RE the only who's oblivious. hes our CB and he wont play safety, bet on it.

Considering refs are throwing flags for breathing on someone heavy the fact that he isn't a big hitter doesn't really concern me. I think he has the potential to be a ball hawk at free safety and will do a lot better job of covering big TE's over the middle then Smith ever did (needless to say).

    Cant hurt to try.

This team needs a center fielder. Cromartie could very well fill that role at times.
What we really need is a pass rush.

I dunno about this. I believe Cromartie is one of the best CBs in the league, not sure if making him learn a new position would be smart.

He is also much better in zone coverage than in man. Not saying he can't play man because he does it pretty well at his size. If he could play an Ed Reed type role. He could be very effective. The guy is a better ball hawk than Shutdown Corner.

  18. Jets don't need a cover guy at safety. That's not the type of safety Rex likes. There's a reason Kerry Rhodes & the team mutually disbanded. Rex likes in the box type safeties who aren't afraid of cover 0, open field tackles or blitzing.

Yes the Jets had a MAJOR problem at safety last year. But people are misinterpreting the problem. The Jets don't require a ton of "Coverage skills" from their safeties...they just have to have the foot speed to not let anything behind them. Smith had such a lack of foot speed & ball reaction skills that he became a major liability on passing downs. That doesn't mean the jets need to go completely opposite at the position moving forward.

Landry is perfect for this scheme. He will make open field tackles, blitz, set a physical tone and not let anything behind him.

TE's have been raping us up the middle for 3 years now. Maybe Rex should alter is plan a little and find a safety that can cover.

Sure, but the Jets had the #1 D in the league that year. Also, there's a reason the Jets went hard after Nelson whose strengths lie in his coverage ability
