We have been so focused on Mo and Snacks that there has been no discussion about the other free agents on our defensive line. Leger Douzable and Stephen Bowen are also free agents that we also have to pay or replace. While Demario Davis is expendable we also have a total of three inside linebackers that could need replacement as Erin Henderson and James Lattimore are also free agents. Darren Walls, Jaiquan Jarrett, and Antonio Allen are also free agents to pay / replace. We are going to need quite a few bodies just to fill out our roster.
13 of our 53 man roster are FA's. I think cap is going to be tight this year. Right now we have $10.7m in cap space plus maybe another $10m for cap inflation. 11 of those 13 salaries will count against the cap. After $9m for Fitz and $16M for Mo, that leaves 9 spots to be filled with a $5.3m cap deficit. Cutting Cro, Kerley, and Cumbe, saves $11.2m bringing our cap space to $5.9m with 12 roster spots requiring cap to fill. I'm no expert but I do believe that mandated contracts for this years draftees will be more than $5.9m. Even with 1-2 restructures we're in deep trouble if for example we tag Mo and can't find a trading partner.
Breno is my least favorite Jet on the current roster and even I can't call him less than adequate. He struggles against to top speed rushers but is more than serviceable against the rest of the league. Provided we don't have to play against a guy like JPP every week he's fine. He's the classic RT in that he is good in the run game and against power rushers but struggles against speed. The reason guys like him keep their jobs is because they don't face speed that often. I'd love to replace him but not the cost of finding a ILB, OLB or potential franchise QB. I agree with Mac's approach to the o-line. Get a good value FA when you can a la Carpenter; otherwise keep drafting mid to late round prospects for depth/competition. As serviceable as Breno may be, it wouldn't surprise me if no name FA, draftee or low in the depth chart player plays well enough to make him expandable. Jets fans need to watch other teams more to realize the state of o-lines around the league.
that all looks and sounds good. hey we have solid vets and we are going to develop young talent and groom them. awesome idea. how do we keep fergeson/extend fergeson/replace fergeson? when he is extended and we use a a pick on the top 3 rounds to draft a tackle i'll feel alot better about it.
the problem is when we faced a good front our offense went to crap. maybe if our line was better we wouldnt have lost twice to the bills and gotten embarassed by the texans. but hey whats 1 more win, right?
Thank God somebody else on this Board knows how to do the Math lol! I think we trade Mo sorry to say. I dont see where the money is coming from. Hopefully I am wrong and Mac works out some financial miracle
Good point. Scary prospect for our GM to face I think its illegal to contact Fitz agent right now but if Mac could it would be A#1 priority IMO as soon as the starting gun goes off in March we resign Fitzpatric within 48 hours Plan B would be to ask Bowles/Gailey worst come to worst what other QB they like out there but prob wont come to that
Btw we can resign our own free agents at any point up until free agency so we're good on the Fitz front
Mo is literally the elephant in the room. Whether we sign him long term, franchise him to keep, franchise him to trade, hit him with the transition tag (this might be a great option), or simply let him test the market everything else we do will center on this decision. Fitz may have looked like a $7-10 mil player last year but his previous contract averaged $3.6 mil. At 33 years old he could potentially play for several more years but his age is a concern. While he would help us a great deal his potential success with anyone else is questionable. We should lock him up quickly if we can but anything over 3 years or $8 mil per year could hurt us if we have a chance to get a franchise QB or if he regresses. Snacks should absolutely be brought back unless someone else overpays him. Ivory will get his money but we should let someone else overpay him. Powell, Henderson, Walls, and Douzable are guys that we should bring back if they can be had on reasonable terms. I would like to see most of our other free agents back in camp but I wouldn't give them much more than the vet minimum. Nick Mangold has two years left on his contract at an average of roughly $9 mil. Despite his recent injury history I would try to extend him for two more years. If we simply extend his current deal the move would be cap neutral this year. Brick's contract is a nightmare. We pushed his compensation from 2012-2013 to 2016-2017 when we restructured him to sign free agents for our Superbowl push. The dead money should be ignored as it has already been spent. We could juggle other contracts to manage the hit or take our medicine now. Either way the focus with Brick should only be on new money. If we do nothing he gets $8,625,000 salary + $1,000,000 roster bonus + $650,000 option bonus + $750,000 workout bonus. If this is all new money it totals $10,025,000 that we pay him in 2016. If we do nothing again next year he gets $11,275,000 salary + $1,000,000 roster bonus + $750,000 workout bonus. Again if I am correct the new money it totals $13,025,000 that we pay him in 2017. This looks to be a ton of money for a slightly above average left tackle. If some team gave us a top 10 pick for Mo we could potentially draft our LT, cut Brick and solve all of our problems. My feeling is that Mo might get us a pick in the 13-16 range and that the only guys that could replace Brick in the draft (Tunsil and Stanley) would be gone by then. Leaving us to address our glaring needs at LB or another position instead of replacing Brick. While everyone else wants to cut Cro without having his replacement I have other thoughts. I think we hang onto him until or unless we find a better player in free agency or the draft. I am not suggesting that we should be the guys that overpay Josh Norman but I do think we could talk to Janoris Jenkins or Prince Amukamara to see if we could get a better value for our money. Otherwise we keep Cro unless a CB is BPA in round one or two of the draft. Geno Smith, Kerley, and Cumberland should be traded for whatever we can get or cut loose. Two trades with the Browns I would do back flips if we could pull off: 1. Geno Smith for Johnny Football 2. Brick for Joe Thomas
I'm ready to pencil in Marcus Williams to take over for Cro. The Browns can keep Manziel... heck we would be better off having Tim Tebow yea he's that bad and that much of a distraction. Geno is cheaper and just fine as a backup. Kerley and Cumb will get cut.
Snacks is most likely gone unless we trade Mo. Ivory will be replaced in FA. Powell, Henderson, and Douzable I would love to resign especially if we lose Snacks... Walls is expendable. I would like to resign Jaq, J.
LIJetsFan its actually a bit worse than you make it out to be we've got around 12 million in space counting the cap at 153 mil which includes your inflated numbers (10 mil)
I'm bored so for the fun of it I decided to play around with OTC we cut Kerley, Cumb, Breno, Brick, and Cro. that leaves us with almost 35 mil. We bring back Brick for 7 mil, Fitz at 6, draft Breno's replacement, extend Mo at 13 mil per... that leaves us with around 9 million to play with.
Richardson - Snacks - Leonard would be a top 10 (top 5?) 3-4 D-Line, and trading Mo would allow Macc to focus on what's really important in a 3-4 D, Linebackers. Back to the O-Line, what bugs me is how many times this last season we played teams with really banged up O-Lines and we didn't play much better against them. If we lost Brick and Mangold for a month we wouldn't win a single game. Not sure how other teams manage.
