Way too many moving parts for this. First off, I doubt most teams care who the Jets want to move up to draft, and even if they did, signing Fitz for a year doesn't preclude them from taking a supposed future franchise QB. And whatever team they swap out with will want guarantees that the Jets won't take who they want. 2nd- Trading Wilkerson would almost certainly have to be done before the draft starts, since he would have to sign his franchise tender and most likely agree to a new deal with the team they trade with. That can't happen in 10 minutes... 3rd, There is no franchise QB to be had, so pick the best player available at 20 or move up a few spots if there is someone they really like, and keep next year's #1 pick.
I hear ya on having to have certain players available for any trade to go through, but that's pretty common. For example the Jets might want to trade up to #3 for the LT Tunsil, but only if he's still there at #3. There may be a trade in the works for Mo where the other team is hoping to get a certain D-Lineman from the draft but if he's gone, the other team will take Mo from the Jets for their pick.
He wants to win and they explained it to him in a way that he sees it being a great help to the team. If the promised money is agreeable why not play it cool and help the team? And in a way he would be getting paid more as a successful team leads to bonuses. So it's win/win in that case.
You mean (like Chase) as a backup? He wants starter money, no one wants him as a starter. Yes, he can sign as a backup for less somewhere. It’s not relative to the Jets negotiations though. Ultimately, I expect him back with the Jets too, but at a reduced salary with potential performance bonuses. But I also expect the Jets to draft their future QB in this draft, so no smoke imo.
1st I think plenty of teams care what we are doing just like any other team in the league. 2nd I think a team trading for Mo knows what he wants in a contract and wouldn't trade for him unless they can pay the man. 3rd I agree about the franchise QB statement but that doesn't mean that other teams might consider that we would take a QB at 20.
I think it far more likely that they do have a deal, they're just waiting until Mac makes all the other moves he wants in FA, so as to not tie up the money on Fitz until after the draft and draft cuts.
I guess it could help the Jets in theory, but do you really think Fitz and his agent would risk millions of dollars to give a possibly small advantage to the Jets in this draft? I don't think so. If the Jets screwed Fitz and signed Hoyer, I doubt Fitz could land a deal north of $5 million, and we assume that the Jets have offered at least $7-$8 million, possibly $10 (as Cimini reported it's higher than we think)
If the contract is signed by both parties, just not sent to the league office, it is still a valid contract and Fitz would know he is getting paid.
I think it's highly plausible. The idea that there is a deal already worked out came into my head a few days ago for a couple of reasons: 1. Fitzpatrick's appearance at the Mike and the Mad Dog show. Could be insignificant, but why does a hometown QB show up at a hometown show if he's no longer the hometown QB? Insignificant on it's own perhaps but just one piece of the puzzle. (do you feel like Sherlock Holmes yet?) 2. The stone silence out of both camps. Nobody is talking; not Fitz, not his agent, not Mac, not Bowles, and not Woody. That seems odd to me. Even the alleged leaks have been all over the place in terms of what has been offered. Heck, Fitz' agent doesn't even seem to be shopping him around. 3. The Clady deal. Brick retires on April 8th and the Jets announce the trade for Clady on the 10th. Then we learn that Clady had his physical with the Jets on the 8th. Mac did not just pick up the phone and call Elway at the last minute; they had this deal worked out well in advance pending Brick's decision and no one in the press knew about it. Not a single leak. The Jet's have become very good at keeping mum. Add all of that to Decker's video and the pieces fall into place. I think it's a done deal (but I've been wrong before).
As I said earlier in this thread, Mac has a plan for the draft. Fitz is a smart guy, he is in on it and sees the benefit to the club. Jets will have Fitz signed to the already agreed upon deal by the time May hits double digits.
I have no idea what you are referring to. I read the OP and understood it to mean Mac and the Jets FO have some sort of gentleman's agreement with Fitzpatrick as an unofficial "official" contract to throw off competition.
I miss the old days were Tanny would just throw $20M at a player and be done with it! Or if he wanted a player in the draft he'd trade 5 picks to move up one slot to get a guy most ppl had rated as a 7th rounder. Or if he wanted a TE say from the Radiers he'd trade his entire draft to get the guy then cut him a year later. I loved those days....there was no guessing, things just got done.
