He ran a limited route tree in college, which was fine for Gase because all that idiot ran were hooks, screens, and fly routes. Now he's in an actual NFL level offense instead of something a HS football team would run, and he's probably having trouble running all the routes to the coaches' liking. Add that onto him turning into a body catcher, like most NFL receivers do for some reason and you get yourself a struggling WR. I think Mims will breakthrough at some point in the next 5 games with Davis out and will prove worthy of a roster spot next year (I hope).
I've been really impressed by Moore lately but I don't think he's a #1. A #1 to me is a guy who can consistently beat guys with physicality on the outside. Someone who is elite at boxing out and high-pointing balls among other things. The only #1 I can think of who's Moore's size is Tyreek and that's because he's both the quickest and fastest player in the league by a considerable margin.
As long as he doesn't need to play on the LOS, which he doesn't, I think he's elusive enough to evade 5 yards of jam contact consistently, the DPI rules take over from there. He doesn't have to be Tyreek Hill to do that.
He doesn’t need to be a certain size…Hill just has blazing speed. Ty Hilton was a #1 and has similar size that Moore has. I do think it would help Zach and the WR corps if there was a big bodied WR on the outside…Mims would be ideal if he can get his ish together.
Steve Smith was a short undersized #1 but he didn’t play similar to Moore at all. Chase is more like him. Davis was/is theoretically a perfect compliment on the opposite side because he was a good contested catch maker who doesn’t get a ton of separation on short to intermediate routes. But he was horrible this year. We need to add another receiver somewhere in the draft ideally.
I think the issue with Mims is that he doesn’t have anywhere near the suddenness when running routes to be an effective NFL receiver. The Jets need to put him on the field and run him on fly routes which is what he did effectively in college - run by defensive backs. Put him in a tight split like the Raiders were doing with that scumbag Henry Ruggs and run him right at he post across the field from the short side.
It's actually way worse. They didn't count some of the tougher drops, which were definitely catchable. Costly fumble as well. Some people say, he is not #1, but a solid #2. So far he has not shown to be solid at all, even at #2. Maybe a rotational bench player? It's been a VERY tough year for Davis. We are talking about drafting a WR high again, in spite of Moore playing really well. This should not be the case after paying what we did to Davis.
Agreed. This is more of a Santana Moss type of guy. Would be good to have another bigger #1 opposite him. What Corey Davis was signed to be, but failed.
Guaranteed next year, but after 2022, they only have a 600k cap hit to cut him. You can bet your sweet ass (or if it's not sweet, just your ass) that he's gone after next year unless he's a flat out stud next year.
Hey, good for you for taking the positive route. I saw a guy who was brought in to be "the guy" and lead by example and instead dropped a bunch of passes in big spots and had a couple of good games here and there. That's not what team with a WR corp made up of slot receivers and castoffs paid 36M for, of that I assure you.
You make good points, but my point is that we had the WORST WR room in the NFL last year. Davis was maybe the best available WR free agent, and he wasn’t great, but serviceable. Teams had to legitimately play defense and not stack the box. There were games last year we didn’t even have a legit WR active for games. Davis at least brought that. I think the ceiling for Moore could be a Laveranues Coles type, which is somewhat a number 1. But I don't see him reaching that high and we'd be selling ourselves short thinking he's our #1 going forward. We need a real #1 to make Moore even more dangerous and our WR core a real threat.
I haven’t really thought about his ceiling or comparisons but he’s already a good player who can make plays. That’s all that’s needed. We need another guy like that even if he’s 5’3” The NFL no longer requires receivers to be 6’3” 220 pounds to beat coverages. I don’t buy into the “real” #1 stuff. I don’t even know what that means. Does that just mean guys that gain a lot of yards and catch a lot of balls? The Rams did extremely well for several years with Goff throwing to Cooper Kupl and Robert Woods who were both basically considered 2’s until Kupp’s explosion this year. He’s quick, sudden and 7/11. I think Keenan Allen is what I’ve been seeing. Give me that guy all day long.
