Rex's D changes so much from year to year that it's hard to know exactly how he'll use Coples and Wilkerson next year. He went from 3-4 to 4-3 and back in Baltimore and he did that because he had specific players (Trevor Pryce and Haloti Ngata) who were better in one front than the other. I still think the odds are really good that Coples and Wilkerson wind up being the Jets defensive tackles at some point in the near future. They bring very good pressure from the inside of a 4 man front. The Jets would still need to find the ends though to make that work and that's why next year is not likely to be the time the Jets make the move to 4-3.
Thats the beauty of this pick. It allows the Jets to play some 4 man fronts with the current personnel. Move Wilk and Coples inside with Pace and Maybin/Thomas/Saap/Dixon on the outside....Or Wilk and Ripoti inside with Coples and Pace on the outside...we could have a very scary front 4 (not Giants scary but close).
Out of curiosity does anyone know where Ingram fell on Mel Kipers "Big Board"? Unfortunately its Insider info and I refuse to pay ESPN for non-coherent drivel. Just curious as he had Coples at #9 yet bashed the Jets for taking Coples over Ingram. Unfortunately Mel doesn't appear to understand need vs BPA drafting techniques. Or maybe he does but the years of hairspray abuse is finally getting to him.
no contest with all the media bullshit about the selection of coples.believe me,when you will see coplis in training camp.you will know that the jets did their homework on this pick. as far as comparing jones to coplesthe one that will be a star is coples.he is head and shoulders above jones as a d.e.take a good look at the jets defensive lin for the future. wilkerson, pouha, coples. they will be awesome..
3 Sacks from a Ryan 3-4 DE isn't bad production from a kid who had not training camp. Not to mention 9 tackles behind the line of scrimmage, hint Devito in his career has 8 stuffs and 1.5 sacks. for a Rex Ryan 3-4 DE I'd say the kid had a pretty good rookie season. I was about to end this when I realized something, Wilkerson led the team in tackles for loss last season, Pace had 7, Scott had 5, noone else was above 4.
The real beauty of the Coples and Wilkerson picks is that neither of them tied the Jets down to a specific front. Neither does Demario Davis. The Jets could just as easily be in a 4-3 in a season or two as the 3-4 they currently play. Getting the two linemen was similar to taking Shaun Ellis and John Abraham in that they're going to be plus players in any system the Jets are likely to run. Even if the Jets ultimately wind up in more of a 46 look both Coples and Wilkerson have a home and in a 4 man front they could play either inside or outside.
this right here. Davis would be a nasty ass 4-3 OLB. im totally amped up this year. I think Sparano's more simple approach will instill accountability. and the drive blocking scheme instantly makes Hunter/Ducasse more servicable. one of them will pleasantly suprise. further more like what you said earlier. our DL allow for varied fronts and Davis is someone who can operate behind multiple fronts. Rex will be cooking something up good for this D. the only worry I have is that Bush is our best coverage safety right now. then again Im glad we drafted him I just wish we couldve landed Nelson. but not at the price Cincy did.
The only thing I'm really psyched about for next year is watching the defense get a year of on-the-job training with Rex calling the plays again. I don't understand why Rex went away from that in 2010 and 2011. One of the things that he brings to the Jets that is just a flat-out positive is his ability to get inside the QB's head and mess with him. We need that again. Some head coaches call the plays on the side of the ball they know. When that's a big part of their value they have to do that or the team suffers. That's just what it is. The Jets haven't gotten half of Darrelle Revis value the last couple of seasons. They got all of it in 2009. If Rex wants to keep Revis he better make him worth $15 million a year because right now he's not worth that.

The dropoff was also cause of aging LBers and spotty safety play but Rex > Pettine Don't think anyone would argue that
