Full ride scholarships will cover tuition, room and board, books, university fees. No, they might not get spending money to go to the movies but everything they need is covered. The universities are making out good but lets not act as if the athletes are taking home ketchup packets to mix with hot water for some tomato soup.
Maybe im thinking about this wrong, but that part where it has Santonio Holmes admitting he accepted money from agents.. just got me thinking about Reggie Bush. With the precedence set shouldnt they strip all of his records out of the books to? Not saying I agree with what happened to Bush but think its a lil f*d up if they erase Bush's legacy just because he won the Heisman. Do you think that as more of this garbage gets rolled out they start going around and retro punishing other players by destroying their college legacys?
Unfortunately there is a statue of limitations on this...I think I read that it's 5 years. Soooo...these older pro's have nothing to lose by saying "yeah, they took the money". That is why Reggie Bush is being put under the gun on this. He's still within that time frame. Still is unfair... BUT, I agree with some of the posters...these kids make the schools a TON of money. For example, that kid Pryor at Ohio State...what, he's in his 3rd year there...by the end of this season he will have most likely made O.S.U. probably in the neighborhood of $50 million. What...and he can't have $10,000 to blow on whatever...yeah....it's a jacked up system....
Well since Homes didn't admit that he took money it shouldn't be a problem. I doubt there is a paper trail if he did.
the article is interesting but i really hate that people look down on the players for taking the money. mezzavo said it best with the universities cleaning up off these kids. its insane the type of money a college football program generates. look at a place like michigan. 108,000 give or take per home game. now tickets are 55 a seat. 55x108000= 5,940,000 per game. not to mention concessions and what not. realistically they have to be pulling in like 7-8 million PER GAME. plus the money they get from making bowl games and merchandise. i mean these programs have to be generating north of 50 mil per season. so when youre 19 or 20, and you see all this, and youre living in a dorm that isnt much better than where you came from (speaking for some of the guys who come from bad situations) without a pot to piss in, you take that money. in fact, the university SHOULD give these guys spending money. considering how much these kids make the university, not to mention the way they drum up interest for academic recruits, i mean how can anyone not agree that they need a decent allowance.
haha good one "No no, its statue......Well I really think youre wrong" Wasnt really worried about Holmes specifically, just the idea of a witch hunt in general.
The students are getting scholarships worth thousands of dollars plus they are getting lots of perks that average students who are paying thousands to attend the school don't get. Most Universities aren't making millions on their football programs and those that do make nice profits are generally using that money to help subsidize other programs and other student athletes. Nobody is forcing these student athletes to play football or accept college scholarships and promise to obey the rules. Obviously there are tons of people in this corrupt world who lie cheat and steal but that doesn't mean colleges and universities should be paying students to play football for them. If we want to go towards that type of a system then the NFL should create a minor league football system and then they can pay the players themselves.
