Check your MOBO's chipset drivers. You may have to reinstall them. Its painless Jeff and takes very little time. Your data will be safe as well. All the chipset providers have update sites where you can d/l your newest drivers for your motherboard/OS combination. As a CYA, perhaps replace your CMOS battery as well. They're pretty cheap as they are glorified watch batteries. Hope that helps..
I wanted to wait a couple of days to see if things remained stable, but it appears that big ups go to Cman; I updated my MOBO chipset drivers, and as if by magic the computer once again recognizes my flash drives. Thanks, Cman!
It may have been addressed in the thread, but does anyone use Firefox? Is it really a better option than IE? I just wiped out my laptop and would prefer not to get another virus.
Ack! I have something called "Total Security" that I somehow managed to be infested with. It keeps popping up every 5 mins and tells me I have to buy their product to get rid of it. I tried to stop process on the task manager, tried to uninstall, tried everything I can find on this pain in the ass. Help!!!!!!
^thats an ugly fucker. Can you get malwarbytes to run? If you can't, and the only thing its letting you do is access the internet, its looking to mine your passwords. Turn your machine off and call a pro.
I killed it! Ha! Renamed it, disabled it from task manager, then was able to run malware program. :drunk: now
I have a dumb question. Just uploaded and began to use firefox (blows IE away speed wise). Can I now delete internet explorer? ..but it would feel good..I hate IE.
You can't really.... If you're on XP and have IE7 or IE8 installed, you can uninstall them but Windows will automatically revert back to IE6.
I don't think there is a way to get rid of it completely... but if you like a speedy browser, you should check out Google Chrome
I thought about doing that, but I'm too much in love with my theme and the addons I have on Firefox. Adblock, flashblock, download them all, can't live without them. BTW, I upgraded to 4 gigs of RAM and a 3.0 mhz processor last month. And I have the option to upgrade from 5 mbps to 6 or 7 mbps, 15 bucks more a month for 6, 30 for 7. Is it worth the money to move up?
I've encountered quite the interesting dilema.. All my icons from my desktop have gone away. They are still there. I can bring them back by going to task manager and typing explorer.exe but when I turn of the computer they are all gone again. It's not that I hate looking at Tom Brady clutching his knee but I think there may be a problem. It also appears that my verizon VZ access is missing, the icon is there but I can't open it up to use my high speed. I can still connect but it's much slower . Any suggestions?
How long ago did this happen? Try just using windows restore to restore to a previous point where this problem did not occur. I've never heard of anything like this happening before.
It happened in between Sat night and Sunday how would I use the windows restore? Is that going to do any damage?
You would want to restore it from a day previous to when it happened. Windows restore will basically revert your machine to exactly what it was the day you are restoring it to. All your files are fine.
