Norton NIS 2009 is a quantum leap over Norton 360. They finally got it right but its a shame that its siblings have gotten such a bad rap that alot of people won't give this suite a chance.

I just want to share the glory that is http://outlet.dell.com

Preassembled but un-shipped, or refurb computers, 30%+ discount to new.

    I just ordered a Dell XPS 435

2.66ghz Intel Core i7-920 (Quad core)
    6GB DDR3 RAM
    500GB 7200RPM HD
    Radeon 4670 512MB GDDR3 graphics

    ...for $670 taxed and shipped.

I ran it through what it would cost to assemble, $1020 before tax.

Was reading about the feared virus for April 1st..and they had this scan for your computer. While I have put everything on my computer that you guys recommended, I decided to give this a scan.

I first ran all my scans..which I like to do before trying something new to see if it finds something else..and this was a pretty good find...found a few Trojans and some other crap. If you choose the long scan..it could take up to a couple hours. Set if before going to bed.

Fuck. Was playing some computer games with some buds online, and my computer crashed. I've been having a bad crashing problem for awhile, but I improved my airflow and have a big fan facing the tower, which helped quite a bit, but did not solve my problem.

So anyways, it crashed today and upon restart, good ol system file is corrupt. Fuck. So I'm formatting and installing anew. Win XP 2.0, I plan on getting most all the Microsoft upgrades available, including IE 8 and SP 3, but not that piece of shit indexing service.

I plan on keeping it minimalist this time...Avira, DVD Fab, Nero, DVD Shrink, WoW, CoD:W@W, Malwarebytes, iTunes(Altho I HATE the background services that run non stop, any way to turn those off but keep the iPod functionality?)...Anything else that yall can think of?

And any idea of what I could do to try solving this bloody crashing problem?

Check your proc temp. Coretemp is a good, small app for that. Google your Proc and check what the correct operating temp should be. Pop the fan off your proc and make sure you still have some gel left on it. If you add some more, make sure its only a drop as too much makes a mess.

Secondly, check your ram sticks. I suspect your chassis/core temp is high but Ram could be a suspect here as well. The next time your system crashes, use your nose and check if anything smells as if its burning. You'll know it when you smell it.

Third, get some canned air and give your box a thorough blowout.

Last, when all else fails, do a repair using the original XP disc, then all the updates.

For startup editing in Win XP: run>msconfig>startup tab then uncheck every app you DONT want to run on startup.

    Hope that helps..

Ya, my core temp is crazy high, running close to 30 on average, but once I start to do pretty much anything a little intensive(dvd conversion, gamin) it shoots up, often times above 50c, up to 62c!!!

I need to buy some gel, because I have none. Unfortunetly, all stores are closed here today! Grr!!!

I didn't even think to check the gel, good thinking. Once I get some, I'll let you know whats up.

    Thanks!

    Fuckin.

So I cleaned my heatsink off, it was encased in dust. Guess that happens when you get a second hand computer and neglect to clean it.

So anyways, the heatsink will NOT stay on. The heatsink was held onto the processor with gel only. I have no idea what the frig to do. A friend suggested using superglue or rubber cement to glue the bracket back to the mobo and then a small amount to glue the heatsink to the bracket. I'm not sure about using superglue or rubber cement on my motherboard, what do you think?

Heat sinks are cheap. Just go get one for either AMD or Intel as they mount differently for different Procs. Do NOT glue anything. That's just tacky. Take my advice IATA and get a new proc fan/heatsink kit. Usually a decent one comes complete with brackets and you might get it for under $50.

MicroCenter is the place to go for that if there's one not far from where you live. Any Computer parts store should have some although they may be Brand X. My recommendation for gel would be Artic Silver. I'm sure some other techies on here can help with a recommendation as well.

Check out Microcenter.com if you need to scope quality parts at a decent price. Same as Newegg.com and other sites..

    I have a problem , no not that !!

My kids have their own PC with windows XP on it , as usual they've screwed up the PC to the point where now I cannot get it to work.
The PC connects to the ISP but will not load the browser (no packets being received ??) . The easiest thing for me to do now is re-install windows....only problem is I cannot find the key code.
My question is this.....Is there somewhere on the PCs files that stores this code and can I access it ??
    thanks

No, but there is a workaround.. Load the original activation code and attempt to activate. If that doesn't work, use the activate by phone option and call. You'll probably be directed to some person in Bangalore. Once this person is on the line, they will ask you a series of generic questions. Answer them as if this is the second time you've installed windows. They will ask you for a reason why and you should tell them about a "hardware problem" that forced you to reinstall windows. That should be enough. Don't worry, you're not calling CTU so there's no voice-stress analyzers in use. :)

You can also try this as well. Check your network connections (properties) and make sure they're set up for DHCP. If they are, the next time you connect to your ISP, try this..

    Run>cmd.. ipconfig ?

    /release *connection name*
    /renew

Watch what happens as you should be issued a new IP address from the ISP's DHCP server.

    Example:

    Run>cmd

ipconfig /all: Will give you all IP addresses assigned to that computer.

ipconfig /release Local Area connection 1

ipconfig /renew: renews all ip addresses, default gateways, etc..

ipconfig /all: Should list newly assigned ip address.
