Douglas took over a team with a terrible offensive line, no long term answer at QB and a few decent pieces on defense

5 years later - The Jets have a terrible offensive line, no long term answer at QB and a few decent pieces on defense

The team performance was largely on Gase and Robinson's horrible coaching; Douglas couldn't be expected to fix the team in his very first draft/FA periods as GM. Thus, I give him a pass for 2020 only; I don't blame him for the 2-14 record. After that, there's no excuse for his not getting a quality backup QB at any point in Wilson's career and not making a hard effort at fixing the O-line.

the o-line is bad, outside of 2 games it looked decent before injuries piled up. The injuries killed us though. we are now out 4 of our 5 opening day starters. we lost all our interior backups except tipmman. We are on OTs 4 and 5. OC 2, LG1, and RG5 thats pretty brutal. FWIW someone on the NFL reddit complied a list of a bunch of defensive rankings and stats into 1 thing combined and IIRC the jets were like 28th or 29th

I just don't think we can accurately gauge the o-line with all the injuries

Give it up, will ya? Your credibility is almost zero with your picture of Zach Wilson on your avatar. I read an article this morning that Zach Wilson is the third worst draft pick in the history of the draft ahead of only Ryan Leaf and JaMarcus Russell.
Your constant excuses for Zach Wilson are growing old. My wife hardly ever watches football, and she remarked during the Chargers game that he looks like a 15 year old playing against grown men. He can't even walk onto the field without tripping himself. :D

Is anyone else convinced our OL always gets hurt because we dont run a nromal or capable O? QB runs wild and plays go in all angles and OL just can't take that beating. Some good old fashioned one on one run and set back for passing could ease the OL if that makes sense. Instead, we have 10 seconds of mayhem per play. OL gets freak injurie's because of such and odd movements.

IDK I think we are just cursed. I can't really remember a year we stayed relatively healthy. everytime we have a decent QB and a shot they get hurt.

The Oline looked terrible in the preseason BEFORE the injuries, Brown’s health was a clear question mark, and it was obvious the depth was terrible.
We did nothing to improve it despite those warning signs.
This was predictable and discussed at length here on this board.

I don’t blame JD for drafting McDonald rather than reaching for an OT.
FA depth moves needed to be made though and we just didn’t.
Same thing with QB depth, it was an obvious issue.

before the injuries? lol we were missing out line most of the pre-season.
becton was on a snap count, brown didn't practice at all, AVT didn't practice at all. only CMG and tomlinson did. that's 3-5ths of the o-line. Week 1 was the 1st time the line all played together all offseason and clearly brown was still hurt. We've had 11 different o-line combinations in 10 games this season. we are starting PS players and players off their couch. we drafted tippman, added schwietzer, turner (yeah he sucks but still), drafted warren, got mitchell back form injury, most people just got hurt. we are on OTs 4/5 now, RG5, OC2. no team is 5 deep at 1 position on the o-line.

You are inadvertently proving my point.
Brown was an obvious question mark, but Becton and AVT looked solid even limited with snaps.
We got a long look at depth and it was completely awful.
So why didn’t we add any depth?
How did Turner make this team?
How is no move made at T when Mitchell and Turner looked terrible with Brown being such a question and Becton’s injury history?
It was negligence on OL and QB depth.
Yes the worst case happened, but can’t let an entire season collapse thru inaction.
    The negligence was baffling.

LOL! I know Zach will always be your hero. You have been making excuses for his pathetic performances for almost three years now. You probably hope they resign him to a second contract. Keep the faith, man!
And feel free to respond--you can have the last word.

Brown wasn't that bad last year though. becton showed alot of potential as a rookie before missing 2.5 years. mitchell looked decent before getting hurt last year (has some weird illness with blood clots that came out of nowhere)
turner was awful yes. but he has 50 starts in the past 5 years and has been in hacketts system. 3 years in GB and last year in Den. usually a guy with 50 starts to be a backup and can play both sides and knows the system on paper seems good JD likes versatile lineman.
We did draft 2 lineman this year (tippman in the 2nd, warren in the 4th) warren just came off IR a month ago. didn't seem too bad yesterday at 1st glance. tippman has played well.

we drafted 2 lineman in the 1st in the past 4 drafts, 1 in the 2nd, and 2 in the 4th. we brought in the top OG in Free agency last year, we brought in a top 2 OC in FA 4 years ago and still have him, we've signed guys like fant and moses who did well.
Compare that to big mac who never drafted a lineman before the 5th round his entire tenure here. we've tried to fix the o-line, we just can't stay healhy

JD has left a path of destruction if he is fired. Even if we decided to rebuild after next year we'll still owe Rodgers 51 million dollars in 2025. So expect a shit show for the next several seasons. Our best chance to hope for a new and improved team is in 2026. By then the few studs JD has landed us will need new contracts, which will make them trade bait for the new GM. SO expect things to look up in 2027.

Yeah, 2027 is our new target year.

    The JD fiasco.

Management bought into the HK narrative that the hero QB would teach the young player and the young player would then emerge in two seasons as a real NFL QB. They didn't get a backup who could take over right away but instead spent money on over-the-hill players and anyone else that the hero QB wanted, including the OC. Then the hero QB immediately got hurt and everything that was put in place for his reign was still there, exposing the GM, the OC, and the young player as frauds.
