that's exactly right. and, i don't see where he is a 'burner'. he had a line and decent arm in washington, and they traded him back to us so they could get santana moss, who is a legit burner.
The danger here is we wind up doing another Chrebet/Martin "Sentimental Deal" which is predicated more on history than what's presently happening on the field. We paid Chrebet because he USED to be THE SLOT GUY. By far and away, he was everybody's favorite Jet and WoodyTans comp'd him very well for it. If it wasn't for that last floatie he went up for, you get the feeling somehow he'd still be haunting the sidelines wearing a uniform. We paid Martin because he was grinding out numbers but we ignored the fact that he was losing a step and was fast becoming a shell of who he once was due to playing time. Again, the usual platitudes (Warrior ethic, etc..) but fact was, his playing time hindered the Jets in their search for a replacement Feature Back. Its time to take a good, hard look at Coles, see what he still can bring to the table and assign a dollar value to it. He's beat up folks. No doubt. His best playing days are probably behind him however, just like Martin, he might just have one good year left in him. Then again, like Chrebet, he's one more concussion away from needing a map to find his house on a daily basis. Sentiment hasn't done a damn thing for the Jets' development. Time to take off those green glasses and look at things exactly for what they are..
Let's ditch Coles along with Penny and Vilma, get a few draft picks, and rain hell on the draft and FA. It's time to build the next Jets generation.
if coles is asking for money (like kendall) we should show his ass to the rookie dorm in camp! maybe even move him to another position, like runningback, or fullback!! coles is done! move him for a 2010 4th round pick!!
Just curious what you think he is worth? I think to a competitive team on the fringe, like the Jaguars, Tampa, Tennessee, Washington (of all places) or the Giants, he could be the missing piece and well worth a #1. If Terry Glenn doesn't come back, he could also make the Cowboys invincible. They have an extra #1...imagine Romo throwing to TO, Coles, and Witten...it just could happen if they don't make it to the big dance. As far as paying him, with all the cap space we have left, couldn't we do something like we did with Baker and throw him a bunch of money on this years cap so that his future #'s may even end up being less than the current figures? AND we wouldn't be saddled Mo Lewis/Chrebet style.
Bye bye Coles? Got to wonder what the vets on the Jets would think about their future with the team if the Jets kick Coles ot the door... There's no "I" in team, but there is a "me."
