IMO coles is gone....i think cotchery is or will be very soon as good as coles - and he may even be ahead of coles next year.... not a classic #1 receiver but very close. close enough. watch D. Bowe of the chiefs this weekend. If the jets can get a guy like that next april to pair with cotchery - that would be a very formidable WR tandem that, IMO, would be better than the present combo. the jets have to stop shelling out these new contracts to 6-7-8 year veterans. more often than not, the performance you get in return is not what was expected. it forces the jets to get a high round WR in april but so what. it should be on their wish list whether coles is hear or not. jil
I somewhat agree. My thing is, if the Jets are going to do the typical spend under the cap and leave money in the bank, then I want them to spend whatever they have to in order to keep him happy. If Tannenbaum suddenly decides to open Woody's checkbook and buy an OLine, a NT, a shutdown CB, and some LBs that can play a 3-4, then worry about Coles later next year. (I'm including spending money on draft picks rather than having them hold out until the season starts again. I don't expect all of this through FA.) I doubt he spends the money though. So just pay Coles.
I'd rather fix the lines that is in need for an overhaul instead of forcing ourselves to fix another position, I am for prepping up for the future but lets be honest here we don't have many weapons here and getting rid of another one will leave us pretty barren, I'd rather get rid of Coles when I know that we have someone who can replace him and we don't have that on the roster right now. Drafting a WR later is fine since we need a consistant #3 WR but to make the search a #1 or 2 while fixing the multitude of problems could be too much for one season.
Coles is not one of "those" guys. If we pay him around what he feels he is worth, he will give his best on every play. This really is a tough decision. Completely devoid of sentiment, the smart move is to trade him now...save the money...and get a #1 for him, because he is at least worth that much. Then we draft our WR1 of the future. Problem is, we would have no veteran leaders left on Offense. That and the fact that Coles is still a top 10 receiver. Losing him would set us back at least a year, if not two, in terms of really competing for a SB. Not that he would be the only factor, but it would be an admission of rebuilding by the FO, and a full on youth movement.
He's getting close to the age where he's never going to get the "one more big deal". If he plays out his current contract he'll be 31-32, realtively beat up, and will not find a team offering him #1 money. His best bet right now is to try to get a little extra money up front, and commit to a long term deal with friendly cap numbers (meaning no cap casualty worries).
I think this is Coles asking for an out, he knows their policy on reworking contracts after Kendall so he knows he'll get a trade if he makes enough noise about it.
If there is a way to work this out so that it does not hurt the cap much then I'd be all for it. Despite what many here think, Cotchery is NOT a legit #1 reciever. He does not have the size or speed for that. He is a great #2. We are short on recievers as is. Brad Smith has not really proven himself, McCareins is as good as gone, and Stuckey and Wright are total unknowns who have relatively low expectations.
The policy was already thrown out the window with the Brandon Moore negotiation. What I think Coles is looking for is guaranteed money. From what I read, none of the $11mm is guaranted. So, I would think the Jets could guarantee his salary next season and half of 2009 and he'll come around.

Coles is still a burner. I think Coles would make a better #1 Reciever if we had a good slot reciever and enough protection to throw. he has suffered and gotten beaten up under the duress of being a pennington victim which is like catching a pop fly while guys are running full speed at you. A little time off, a little added talent at WR and a better line and I think he could regain form. He would at least be worth it while we look for a certifiable big play WR which we can't get this offseason. I think what someone said about him looking for his last big deal is right on point. He will NOT get a good deal at 31 with the mileage on his body, so he's looking to improve and get an extension that will send him into the sunset. It would be nice to do it as a Jet. Especially if this turns into a super bowl team anywhere down the line where he can be that grizzled Vet #2 or #3 WR who makes a few key catches in big games. I would definitely open up talks with him in a congenial manner in the offseason while calling other teams at the same time and hopefully negotiate him down to something that is in the range of 4 years and does not hurt our cap much.
As long as its not a ridiculous amount he's asking for, I'd consider paying him. If they don't pay him though, they'd better be pursuing a guy like Bryant Johnson, Bernard Berrian or someone along those lines.

If it's more cost-effective to address the O-line and trade Coles away, then I would be all for it. I love the guy, but he's never going to get any good passes thrown his way while the QB is counting the stadium lights.
I think people underestimate how good these recievers look when there is a running game and a O-Line. A guy like Cotchery would be achieving reggie wayne fame if he played on the Colts.
Well he is a great leader and that is hard to measure in dollars. If we could do a great trade then maybe otherwise I say "pay this man his money"
The guy has been paid his money 3 times now and each time he has weasled his way out of the deal he signed. Coles is a real warrior and I respect him as a football player and I even respect the fact that he has hard balled his way out of deals he signed, but to over pay for him now would be nuts. Sign him to a reasonable deal or get value for him now. We should have moved him after last year.
Off topic but that is true that the West Side Stadium would have been one of the biggest stages in the world. The location, the atmosphere... Having a football stadium right in the heart of New York, people taking the subways to the games.... It would have been like the Garden. A monday night game there or something like that would have been incredible. The further into the future we go the more I wish it would have been done.
